hymnodist:
Lost in her thoughts, the voice gives her a start, eyes turning in a quick sweep to find the man addressing her, locking on with a singular (if startled) intensity. “O-oh, well… uh….” Eloquent. Of course, she hadn’t considered that there might be any that might recognize her for what she is, and thus, receiving said recognition leaves her, however momentarily, a little stunned.
Quickly as it came, the startled expression wanes into pleased surprise, then beatific welcome, head inclining. “For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother,” she murmurs in kind, and then laughs quietly, seemingly sheepish. “You’ll have t’ pardon me, Father– I’m not so good at th’ formal stuff; but it’s been a while since someone Knew me so easily, outside’a th’ Vatican.” Which really, spoke a lot for how strong his faith must be. “Pardon if it’s rude… but are there any Saints in your family? Y’ seem as if y’ might be…” Close to one. Or perhaps one himself. It’s been so long since she’s been around an actual Saint.
It seemed as if the recognition between the two of them was mutual. Though he was sure she hadn’t discerned his True Name, she at least was close enough to the Divine that she could recognize another who walked in Their light. As much as he wished to speak truthfully to her, his obligation as a Servant denied that to him. Thankfully, his adopted name gave him an out.
“I’m afraid it’s nothing as grandiose as that. My foster father and brother were both long-serving Men of God as well, so perhaps it is that legacy that you feel. I have served the Church for as long as I can remember, and while it is true that I was...surprised to see you walk among us, I would never mistake the feeling of the Divine in my presence. Perhaps it was partly my own time spent in the Vatican in the past that helps me to feel it so strongly.”
More likely it was his connection to the Grail as well as his Sainthood, but he would leave those details out for the time being.
