My machine sewn shirt tutorial is FINALLY FINISHED! Written tutorial on the blog, video tutorial on youtube. Both probably more detailed than necessary.
I'll post more shirt pictures later, right now I need to go work on other stuff to give my brain a rest from all the shirts.
I've already had several people tell me they've made shirts based on this and that the instructions were easy to follow, which is very exciting to hear!!
Happy 1 year anniversary to the most time & labour intensive tutorial I've ever made! (It's my longest video, and the written version is split between 4 blog posts, so it was a huge amount of work.)
I have no way of knowing how many shirts it's caused to exist, but it seems to be quite a few! I've gotten a lot of nice comments from people saying they made shirts and found it very easy to follow, as well as a number of people saying it helped solve problems they'd had on previous shirt attempts.
I haven't made any new shirts this year, so I ought to do some soon.
Yayyy more shirts! more shirts are still happening!
Unfortunately coletterie.com does not have a tumblr, but this image is so helpful I had to share. So often people ask us what fabric they should use for a certain cosplay, and two things you should always ask yourself are: 1) how much does it need to flow, and 2) how heavy does it need to be. Sheen and texture are obviously important as well, but picking a weight and stiffness is the first thing you should tackle.
From The Coletterie’s awesome blog post:
When you choose a fabric for your sewing project, ask yourself these questions to decide on an appropriate weight:
Should my fabric be sheer or opaque?
Will a light fabric be difficult to sew for this project?
Will the fabric be sturdy enough to tolerate stress on the seams?
Will the heaviness of the fabric cause bulky seams?
And to decide on an appropriate amount of drape:
Will the fabric have enough drape to flow the way I want?
Will the fabric have enough stiffness to have the structure and crispness I want?
Digital Download Rat Scarf Crochet Pattern // TheDollKeyper
yall know that post with all of those absolutely stunning crochet flowers? well i just bought a pattern from the shop those are from and Good Fucking Lord.
I was expecting a like a Chart or two, maybe some written instructions. not Seventy Seven full color pages for One type of rose.
this was like 8 bucks???? obviously i did some redacting but Good Lord. if you are even a little bit into crochet go throw money at this absolute Mad woman its Definitely worth it.
back at it almost an entire year later. and i can now confirm she's this insane in all of her patterns (there's over 84 of them????) (<compliment)
she has also made a website since the first post (link) the patterns are cheaper there and the payment is handled through PayPal (and I'm guessing she gets a Way bigger cut of the money than with her Etsy so maybe check out the site instead) of the Etsy listed above.
also quick faq below the cut bc idk, supporting small businesses ran by WOC is important and this lady is rad. I just genuinely love her products and want more people to know about them.
I was window shopping and well. If you were hesitant about trying a patty pattern bc money is Tight for everyone rn. Here's one that just straight up free because she discontinued the pattern collection it was a part of.
also she has a new website and it's just nice :)
I wanted to post about this because I know many of my mutuals are avid crafters and I don't know how much attention this endeavour is getting outside of end-of-life spaces-
The Loose Ends Project matches crafters with a project that is unfinished because of death or disability. They offer help with a spectrum of textile mediums in over 80 countries. One project I find particularly lovely: “My mom was making this octopus for me. She was 67 years old when she passed away from COPD. She was hospitalized for pulmonary rehab several times and would always take it to work on while she was there and loved to talk about it with people."
(the red heart marks the last stitch made by this person's mom) Anyway, if something like this is something you'd like to be involved in, they are always looking for more crafters <3
My favourite recent finishing project that they posted about wasn't precisely something that the crafter left unfinished. The knitter in question had had dementia, and thought she was knitting scarves. So a finisher was found to piece all the little bits of knitting together into a blanket.
Got inspired by a piece of ceramic by @claypigeonpottery that I saw the other day
McCalls Pikachu Plush 2512 Sewing Pattern
This thing has been out of print for like, 26 years and some of us want to make chubby classic pikachu so uh... I figure it's okay to share bc it's kinda hard to get your hands on the remaining physical copies.
Bonus points: Aelith made some embroidery/applique files for it too
Remade by AeilithArt so that we could use the pattern without like, destroying it. It's not exact since it's trace, but it's p much the same

thank you to @io-kj for putting me onto the free software Quilt Assistant, which is windows only and was last updated in 2013. coincidentally i already have windows emulated and it is working like a dream
despite the many astonishingly useful features my real favorite part is the color picker which is 100% identical to the MS Paint of my childhood
note: original possum design (c) possum mood who has not yet answered my instagram dm about not-for-profit reinterpretation but i hope they have kindness in their heart
i love this software. we will be wed in the spring

so i made this guy and im very proud of him look at my boy ❤❤❤❤
Since I saw no links in the notes, his name is Roland. Unfortunately, it looks like the pattern is only available in a book, but it's also got 21 other big knit stuffed toy patterns that are p cute so it might be worth it. The whole back shell section is also up as errata on the blog though, and it looks like otherwise it's a garter belly, some basic circles, and i-cord legs and antennae. So, if you want to, it doesn't seem too hard to reverse engineer.
It's wild to me that there are people out there that are still Big Mad about the ravelry trump ban
Like, y'all realize that this is a big queer space, right? That one of the founders is a trans woman?? The left was never tolerant to bigots bucko
Tips for choosing knitting patterns for a beginner.
I mean, generally yeah. My caveat for the first part is that nothing is impossible to start with. It’s okay to learn on something more challenging if you learn better with trial and (lots of) error. aka me i am boo boo the fool
And “heirloom” does generally mean ‘this will stay and be passed along for generations on penalty of death’ because a massive amount of work goes into it. A lot of the time “heirloom knitting” just straight up means Shetland Lace which
is fully bonkers
The exception is the phrase “easy heirloom” which basically means 'fairly simple lace chart blanket that we’re going to market to beginners who have no frame of reference for how much effort goes into lace knitting or blankets so they’re going to get in over their head and get super frustrated but won’t quit bc of sunken cost and their pride as a grandmother but it will turn them off of knitting entirely’

[ID: 4 images. The first is a set of fair isle knit leg and arm warmers on a dark blue background. The arm warmers are laying on and slightly obscuring the leg warmers. They are done in light blue, white, grey and dark blue and have various repeating flower, bee, and trellis motifs. The second is a full view of the leg warmers on the same background. The third is a full view of the arm warmers on the same background. The fourth is the pieces folded, stacked, and tied in bright green and turquoise ribbons. A note written in blue ink with care instructions is slightly peeking out below the stack. End ID]
As a nice Thursday surprise, my commission for @travelerblessed over in instagram finally arrived yesterday! I've been holding off on posting any pictures so far since I would consider them spoilers until she was able to see them herself.
But, I'm so excited to be able to share photos of them now!! I worked super hard to refine the ideas of my slapdash prototype leggings into a final product I'm proud of. I also love Kari's cosplays and can't wait to see these contribute!!
I can’t draw very well and hated that I couldn’t draw my DnD character, a tabaxi cleric named Merry Thing, but then I remembered I’m pretty good with a needle and thread so I made her
All made by hand, hand embroidered details, and I even crocheted the lace trim on her shift!
