Why I'm not pro-Santa... and his elves

It's officially Dec. 25 on US Eastern Standard Time, so merry Christmas and happy holidays for those who are celebrating/hibernating.

While it's nice to think a jolly old man in red and his little humanoid helpers are the ones behind each and every present under a tree, I personally feel it is more important NOT to forget that it is countless pairs of human hands, loving or unloving, that really make this holiday possible. It's not some magic.

So please thank those who make things happen. Please give show some love and wish the merriest of holidays to those who work - be it a waiter, a taxi driver, an amusement park attendant or a pizza delivery person - on this special day. They sacrificed their time to spend with their own family so that YOU can spend time with yours. Please make it worthwhile AND don't take it for granted.

So I don't think I will ever attribute gifts to the ever-elusive Santa and his pals. Instead, I want to always remember that it is a privilege on this day to have family and friends around me, a table full of food and gifts wrapped in ribbons.

this is just one of sappy holiday statuses you'll see all day long. please feel free to just keep scrolling if you are not in the mood to read it. here goes:

2013 has been a very, VERY special and eventful year for me and those around me so far. it has seen a lot of firsts and lasts. i met wonderful people whom i cherish for life, along with those who have been on my side this whole journey. i have been to more new places than i could ever imagine. many of my dreams actually came true and i still have all of YOU in my life.

shout out to Terrance, my beloved. you have been the most patient when i act selfish and spoiled. the same goes to your energetic friends who are so accepting of my quirks. you are more than what i deserve but i guess it's too late for me to let you go :*

i need to give some credits to London & CIEE because without them, i would've never met the amazing Fatimata and her delightful family, who kindly let me stay at their place right now.

thanks to all the wonderful people i met through my semester abroad! especially, Amber, whose kitchen/survival tips saved my life, & Celia, who ran down the fire exit with me every time, went on epic quests for good food AND made the cold showers bearable.

merci to Victoria, for letting me stay in your room when i was in Paris and for being there on trips to Morocco & Italy aka. the highlights of my semester abroad!

i'm grateful for my roommate Tami. you've been through a lot this year and i'm not sure if i was capable of being your personal cheerleader. you have awesome family and friends who are there for you and i'm more than willing to be a shoulder to cry on. i shall kick my habit of not replying to your texts 'cause i know you absolutely hate it lol

2013 has seen my professional portfolio grow exponentially. i have been given positive feedback for my writing gigs! thank you all, especially my sources!! i couldn't have told the stories without you. your enthusiasm and energy bring life to the stories i tell. editors, thanks for catching my mistakes so i look fabulous in print and online. you deserve a freaking round of applause.

speaking of my writing, i miss my Ringier family so terribly. Amiee, Desiree, Jamie Hyejoon, Brenda, Sofia, Alice, Ernie, Steven and Rachel. i miss our lunch breaks and that one time the entire office was out of electricity and we were screaming "Save the ice cream." i still have photos on my phone. i love you guys so much.

I should have known better. To not click on the link to the Onion, the "America's finest news source." But I did click on said link that led me to this gem. Silly me.

Maybe it was meant to be a satire. Or my ability to correctly decipher someone else's sarcasm has been in decline. But whatever. I was offended.

Basically what this garbage of an article did was to make fun of the stalking-turned-rape-and-muder epidemic by saying that female joggers being murdered and dumped in the woods is "the transcendent,time-honored pathway taken by all women who chooses to exercise outdoors by themselves," "one of life's great constants," "[the women's] ultimate, inexorable destiny," "their preordained role in the greater tapestry of life itself" and other equally disgustingly glorified metaphors for what is an atrocity.

So, the Onion, since you had the nerves to publish this online, do you really REALLY believe that female joggers being assaulted and discarded by some psycho killers is something as beautiful and poetic and natural as some autumn leaves falling down from a tree?

There is a line between jokes you CAN tell and the ones you CAN NOT tell. And this ogle-stalk-rape-kill-then-dump one is the latter. Because of folks who go out hunting down innocent people who just want to stay healthy AND folks like you who think such homicides are funny, lives are lost every day. You encourage these psychos by applauding, patting their backs and laughing with them. BECAUSE OF YOU. BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

I don't jog but I know several of my female friends who jog regularly. What they have to endure while outside is outrageous. Even for non-joggers like me, the fear of going out and never coming back alive is very real. We have to think of the things that can happen to us every time we put on our shoes. The bad things. Because of the society we live in. The world which favors men. Including ones who are more than willing to remind us, with force, that jogging paths are not ours to be on.

Be wise about what you joke about, especially when you have privilege.

On the prefix 'Post-[insert whatever -ism]'

I noticed that when people prefix post- to -isms (racism, sexism, classicism, etc), they don't really mean we, as a society, are over with them. Instead, it is an indication that they are too terrified to acknowledge and deal with -isms.

Throwing post-[-ism] into a conversation is a way to tell others, "okay, I feel uncomfortable. Let's not talk about it now." But this cowardice--or in the word of Dr. King (my current women's studies professor), "erasure"--is what's stopping us from facing and combating social ills. Not seeing a problem does not make it disappear. It is still there, and something must be done. To people who suffer from direct consequences of -isms, these things are not imaginary. They are real. By claiming you don't see them is to abuse your privilege.
