what they don’t tell you about being a writer is that returning to a long fic you haven’t touched in a while means rereading 50k words first because you don’t actually remember your own fics that well

everyone rejoice, Ao3 is back
Idk if this has been talken before (ignore this if so) but it's really funny how people go "all addictions matter!" until it's abt AI. Like I've genuinely never saw even ONE person be empathetic towards this before.
yeah, sadly. gen ai was built to be addictive. I know a lot of people (not necessarily saying the majority of them, but a lot of them), who talk to ai like it’s their friend, struggle with mental health issues and are lonely. and then there are always these “morally superior” people who say “well just talk to real people, just find a friend” and it’s actually not different from “oh you’re homeless? just buy a house! oh you’re depressed? just be happy!”
sure, you (general you) could say “there are people who want to be your friend, especially in online space, just reach out” but I don’t think these people understand that for those who are struggling with mental health issues, waking up and getting out of bed can be a challenge. reaching out to people and talking to them are not something they can “just do it”. ai was built specifically to be “easy” for them. the same applies to people who struggle with mental health issues and turn to ai for fanfics, people who struggle with mental health issues and have ai write fanfics for them, people who struggle with mental health issues and talk about their blorbos and their fic ideas with ai, or people who struggle with mental health issues and ask ai to be their beta reader. ai was built to be convenient, easy, accessible and addictive for these people. I’ve already seen this happen to so many people in my life.
and I promise you, the last thing these people need is for the internet mop to harass, mock and insult them. you (general you) are not making a single thing better by resorting to being a bunch of bullies who find a shiny new noble excuse to harass people whose struggle you know nothing about.
“but I struggle with mental health issues too and I don’t use ai” well good for you! but other people are not you. their stories, trauma and ways of coping are not yours. you can argue that “turning to ai is a terrible and unhealthy coping mechanism” but mocking, insulting and harassing people for choosing a coping mechanism that you believe is terrible and unhealthy and ethically wrong won’t make you the good guy either.

💭 “our son’s description was accurate!”
the antiship idea that your fictional tastes must equal your IRL tastes is incredibly aphobic and queerphobic.
that person who enjoys lolisho content must be attracted to real children? okay, then that asexual who enjoys smut must be lying about being asexual. that aromantic who enjoys romance stories must be lying about being aromantic. that lesbian who's attracted to a male fictional character must be attracted to real men. that gay man who's attracted to a female fictional character must be attracted to real women. wdym "it's different"? no, no, your fictional tastes definitely equal your IRL tastes, because the antiship community says so!
"The haunting adeline movie is gonna make men think it's okay to rape women!"
blaming a piece of fiction for a person's crimes is just another form of shifting accountability away from the actual perpetrator, a healthy, sound of mind, adult should be able to read a dark fiction book or watch a movie involving dark topics without it shifting their moral compass in such a drastic, harmful way.
IF you read haunting adeline and decided to go rape women you are either not healthy, not sound of mind, or not an adult.

If a fanfic writer uses ChatGPT and/or Gemini to help them with fixing their typos and grammatical mistakes, but everything else (the entire fic) is written entirely by them, a human writer, is the fic considered human-made or AI-generated in your opinion?
It’s human-made, because a human writes the fic
It’s AI-generated, because AI has touched the fic
*This poll was submitted to us and we simply posted it so people could vote and discuss their opinions on the matter. If you’d like for us to ask the internet a question for you, feel free to drop the poll of your choice in our inbox and we’ll post them anonymously (for more info, please check our pinned post).
You can disagree with the author’s choice. You can think it’s stupid and in poor taste. But tbh if the fic was written by a human then it’s human-made. It’s that simple.
If I write a sentence “she doesn’t loves him anymore” then that sentence is human-made because I as a human came up with it and wrote it. If, hypothetically, I ask ChatGPT if my sentence is grammatically correct and ChatGPT tells me no, it should be “she doesn’t love him anymore”. Then that doesn’t mean ChatGPT writes that sentence for me. It doesn’t mean ChatGPT came up with that sentence. My sentence is still mine, still something I came up with and wrote. ChatGPT just points out my grammatical mistake.
So in this case it’s the same as having a human editor. Only that instead of a human editor, it’s a robot editor. But that doesn’t mean the work was generated by a robot.
It’s a shame that the other turns to AI for help, but that’s their choice. And the poll doesn’t ask about if you think it’s ethical for them to do that so
