I watched this little feller take his first steps yesterday afternoon.

it's finally that time of the year again for the clinically depressed newscaster describing february with disco elysium music
Man I'm generally pro nuclear power but something i don't see talked about a lot outside of where i am locally and haven't been able to reconcile is the harmful effects of uranium mining, partially in the land conservation sense, but especially in terms of cost of human life and health. Historic uranium mining has contaminated soil and much of the water table that supplies Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe, among others, in a region where water's scarce, for people and households that already have limited access to clean running water and stable healthcare.
Of course oil & gas also has devastating impact, on a much bigger scale if nothing else just because of the sheer quantity of raw material needed, and we ought to prioritize using the nuclear material we do have for energy over DoD projects (wishful thinking...) But I just wish I was aware of a push to get nuclear material without sacrificing safety of people, especially indigenous people, and the health of land.
Obligatory, not an expert in mining of environmental land use, but as a chemist I suspect the fault isn't with the act of extraction but the sloppy cost-cutting that surrounds it.
Mining could be done in ways that aren't deleterious to human and ecological health but people don't do it that way because of the expenses. The refining of the ore - often initial steps done on site before being sent for enrichment - is the real killer because it produces vast amounts of chemical runoff that most companies and states have just historically dumped somewhere as the cost of further processing it for safe disposal is deemed uneconomical.
If you can solve those two problems, it's most of the issue right there.
Tailings are mostly from onsite ore processing, yeah. But there's a certain amount of heavy metal contamination you can get just by leaving a bunch of exposed stone sitting around to weather. I believe the term is acid mine drainage.

the midnight sun lurking just over the horizon. It's baleful eye remains hidden, for the time being.
I'm getting old by the standards of younger me and it's freaking me out. A lot of the heavy shit that I thought was going to define my entire life is now almost a decade old. Back then I thought if I made it through it all I'd have grown from it or at least have some useful life lessons but nah. I'm sorta just a regular dipshit operating a year or two behind everyone else. A hard-earned life tastes the same as any other I guess.
Taste the juicy voltage! And (optionally) own this Polaroid:
