By the way, drafting update: I am THREE SCENES AWAY from finishing the first draft of TtLW >:)
Pros of the survival-plus-romance plot that I’m working with for Taking the Long Way:
1. It lets me focus on a LOT of the things that I most enjoy researching, writing, and describing, in terms of both logistics and themes. (Queer themes, science-flavored magic, medicine, adaptation and cooperation to support differing abilities, adaptation after injury & disability, speculative biology, interpersonal dynamics in the context of forced proximity, ecological ethics, natural landscapes, survival skills, failure analysis, etc. etc. etc.)
2. The nature of the plot forces my characters to choose to confront personal issues that they otherwise could have spent the entire rest of their lives avoiding, because it sets up scenarios where continuing to avoid those things would be a betrayal of even deeper character traits. DEEPLY satisfying to me.
3. The characters themselves, who would not normally have chosen to continue to interact past their first meeting without the forced proximity, highlight one another’s wounds in ways that are really satisfying to me, too. For one example out of several: What does it feel like to have been a victim of violence and to then come to rely on (and even feel affection for) someone who uses violence as a tool? Is it a comfort to have that violence on your side this time around, or does it feel like a betrayal of your past?

An icon that I put together for my general rp blog a while back! Featuring Ithadel in stoneform, plus more symbolic representations of all the main characters on the blog: Mirian (caffeine molecule and centipede), Ithadel (eye beads), Oscar (roses and sunflowers), and Skitter (centipede). Okay so I haven't been talking about it much because I don't tend to lifeblog much on tumblr in general anymore
BUT
THE BOOK
I am 90% done with the first draft of my book
Holy fucking shit y'all I have never made this much progress on such a large project in my life. I really genuinely think I'm gonna finish this thing!
(I am looking forward to switching from drafting over into editing so, so much sdlfkdshg)
I’ve sketched ideas for ~15 drawings over the past two weeks.
The likelihood that I’ll draw any of them, let alone most? PRETTY LOW.
But man, the art yearning is strong right now.
Prágma (mine) and Lumen (belonging to @grumpyoldsnake / @krtart) sharing a moment of intimacy.

A somewhat unsatisfactory painting. Those happen! Thankfully, I was much happier with the results of my second attempt at this same scene. ...I think the lesson I'm learning here is that I really prefer painting at smaller scales. xD Art Blog | Bluesky | DeviantArt

A gift for my mother, @nurgletwh!
The final version of this concept painting.
I kind of like the concept painting more in some ways. It had a softer feel, played better to the strengths of watercolor, and I was much happier with how the paint handled in my little sketchbook than I am with how it handled here in the large scale on Arches 300 lb coldpress. I wound up having to completely retouch the clouds with gouache, hah.
Still, I think it turned out okay! I do still love the general imagery.
