16. The Tower

They were done for. The field was filled with bodies, blood, fire, bullets, and fallen weapons. Everything was silent and loud all at once. Voices filled his head, screaming, begging, sobbing…

               Everything tilts, the world spinning and his heart is hammering in his chest. He could smell it. Gun powder, copper, death, everything was so saturated as the world was dyed a sickening red.

It was too much.

Everything is too much.

It was making him sick.

He needed to move forward, gather anyone who was left and get off the field.

But he couldn’t move. His body refused to obey anything he said.

Instead, he felt the fear envelope him and his head start to throb.

He just wanted out.

He just wanted o u t.

“Yukimura!”

His eyes snap open and he sits up. The first thing he sees is her face, laced with concern.

She pressed her hand against his forehead, then combed her fingers through his hair.

“It’s just a dream…”

She kept saying it, over and over, hoping it would reassure him.

               He took a deep, steadying breath, wrapped an arm around her shoulders and fell back against the futon. She squeaks in protest, but he pretends not to hear it. Instead, he just holds her, keeping her close.

               It was all a dream, but the comfort of her warmth is real.

Harr and I sat in his dark home, huddled together on the couch. The electricity was out due to the horrible thunderstorm going on just outside.

One candle was lit on the coffee table, while the contestant lighting otherwise kept the house lit.  The boom of the storm shook the walls, and I clutched tighter to my boyfriend’s arm.

“You don’t have to hold on so tight, nothing bad is going to happen.”  A huge roll of thunder almost drowned out Harr’s voice.

“In an electrical storm, we have a very high possibility of getting struck by lighting.” I rubbed my forehead into his shoulder.

From all the jumping, I was practically in his lap. Between lightning flickers, I saw Harr’s blushing face. He ran his other hand up and down my back to soothe me to no avail.

“You need a distraction” he commentated, looking around the room.

“No, I need you to use your magic to stop the storm!”

“I had no idea you were so scared of thunderstorms” he chuckled lightly.

11. Justice

               It wasn’t his fault. It was part of his jobs and she was suspicious. She could have made his life easier and just been honest with him. He wasn’t completely unreasonable.

               She dodged and talked to his Lord as though he were some pervert attempting to have his way with her. An insult Lord Nobunaga found little more than amusing. Lord Nobunaga didn’t think she was a threat.

               She worked harder than he had expected. Polishing the floors, cleaning the walls, introducing herself to everyone in the castle and inviting them to call on her aide should they need anything. All she was required to do was to live in the castle.

               He couldn’t tell what her endgame was. Get closer to Lord Nobunaga? But she pushed him away at every turn. Maybe to get information? But all she asked were questions relating to being chatelaine. Or maybe she was just an ordinary woman in the wrong place at the wrong time.

               But it didn’t make sense.

               Why was she at Honno-ji?

Why was she wearing strange clothes?

Why did she run?

Nothing about her made any sense!

He had all the questions and none of the answers.

And she was still hiding something. He could see it in her eyes and defensive posture, like if she curls in on herself enough she’ll stop whatever secrets she had from spilling forth.

But if she wanted him to trust her, like he wanted to, she needed to give him the truth.
