I really love that they didn’t take Jean down the “you don’t understand what I’ve been through we’re nothing alike” route. It would’ve been so easy for her to say to Peter that he has everything because he’s seen as a hero and she’s a villain as we often see in this kind of media.
I love that instead Jean recognises just how alike they both really are. She shows Peter the weapons Damage Control made to take him out. Tells him isn’t it cruel the people you call friends were ready to kill you if you became a threat? Just like they did my sister, just like they did to me.
And in doing so Peter shows her just how alike they are. That she is hurting too and she’s lashing out and really she needs to hear those same words that he holds onto.
Their circumstances were so different but at the end of it all they are one and the same. And if I can do good, if I can be a hero and if I don’t have to do this alone, then neither should you.
They saved each other long before the shot was fired because they needed someone to save them too.
Also I really like how they had Peter apologize for kissing MJ, like in that specific situation there's not really any way he could have known it was all a ruse, but its still really nice that they had him explicitly apologize onscreen for violating her boundaries
really love that every time they cut to frank he was doing some bullshit. hits peter with an armored car and tells him to stop whining. lives in an abandoned ship with 20 booby traps like a maniac and thinks that's normal. brought a gun to a hulk and telepath fight and genuinely thought that would be enough. sees hundreds of people get frozen by jean's psychic powers and sets up a sniper gun on a roof because he's not gonna let that stop him. i have to respect the hustle
Just wanna mention, that Ned remembered Peter the way Jean pretended to make MJ remember Peter. Love that for him.
Also Mj did nothing wrong, it would be completely reasonable not to be in love with a guy you dont know idk why yall are hating on her so much. Kinda feels like you think women owe you something because you like them.
That moment in Brand New Day when Peter comes through MJ's window and she agrees to come with I thought "huh, she agreed pretty fast. Maybe she feels this is the something big she was waiting for?" And then when he starts swinging MJ across the city I literally leaned over to my friend in the theater and said "She's not screaming this time, last time she was screaming her head off" AND I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THEN THAT IT WAS NOT MJ 😭😭😭 like maaaaannnnn Jean THAT WAS COMPLETELY UNCALLED FOR
that scene where frank and Peter were just laughing together in the hospital room😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭that scene where Ned and Peter were talking together and finishing each other sentences and MJ drew them and drew Peter as Peter instead of spiderman😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭that scene where Ned and Peter did their handshake😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 oh my gosh my heart😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Ok but Frank doing The Most at the end of brand new day is so in character because not only is he hilarious but he will also do anything to make that kid laugh and feel better and he knows Peter is watching him from down there so he's like ok time to be a buffoon with my spot-on impressions
i wanna cry the way i assumed vmax was some powerful weapon or something and jean grey was going to use it to take over the world or some cliche crap but no. it’s the frikin vent company . the last thing her sister saw. THE LAST. THING. HER. SISTER. SAW. IM BAWLING NO ONE TALK TO ME
one of my favorite small details about brand new day is when peter’s swinging mj to frank’s house after he finds out she’s in danger and you can hear him whisper-chanting “web…stop…web…stop” under his breath as he goes to concentrate on making it a smooth ride for her. peter could barely control his organic webs atp (literally like 5 minutes before that he was like, bouncing off buildings and falling way too far because he couldn’t figure out to use them like the synthetic webs) so i found it adorable how hard he was focusing on swinging, something that used to be second nature to him.
First off, this shit was a banger. Amazing effects and visuals, a wonderful story that hurts just right when it wants to, a skrillion out of ten.
The rest is spoiled for, well, spoilers. View at your own risk.
I really liked the suit, excluding the new web-shooters - now i dont mean the organic webbing, i mean the mechanical dodads mate uses before all that, they look like someone slapped something on the wrists instead of it being at least somewhat integrated into the suit like it has in the past, which they literally were.
It was fun seeing some spider-man villains' in action, even if outside of scorpion it wasn't very much, and even then bro didn't get all that much. There were a bunch i didn't know but like half-recognized? It was cool to see how integrated he was into the city, seeing how he'd been at it for 3 whole years (i think) and how he even had an in with the cops, working with a cool cop lady - not unlike the one he worked with in the insomniac game.
This shit really knew what it was doing with MJ, and how to fucking punch you in the gut again and again. They really made it feel kinda like fate for Peter to happen into Ned, then following bro to their party, then seeing MJ and having bro be so… awkward. Then seeing her with a boyfriend would kick anyone in the dick. THEN later having her find the fucking script he wrote himself from no way home that he didn't read to her? Fuck bro… I've been seeing some stuff about that scene online, thankfully no spoilers about it specifically, but about people saying they'd make MJ walk (instead of swinging her home) and like???? No matter how much what she said might've hurt, you don't force her to walk across the whole damn city, plus peter HAD TO at least get her out of Frank's base cuz if he didn't she'd more than likely have set off a bajillion booby traps bro, cmon. even then, you dont leave the person you love to walk home after everything that had happened.
Now onto the bad guy… or more accurately, Jean Grey. Unfortunately I had that reveal partially spoiled for myself from improperly tagged posts, despite my best efforts to avoid them. BUT, I still really enjoyed everything leading up to her official reveal, and everything that happened post said reveal. I think Sadie Sink did a wonderful job playing Jean, and I'm excited to see her in more MCU projects in the future. I think it was really nice to have the first, to my knowledge/understanding, mutant in the MCU to have met Spider-Man. He's always been a friend to the mutants and i think it was a really good idea to have him be the first big introduction of them into the MCU timeline. I'm really excited to see more of Sadie Sink's Jean Grey in the future :]
Now, I really liked seeing Peter interact with Frank Castle (the punisher). I've always really liked Jon Bernthal's Punisher in Daredevil and his own show, and it was really fun to see such a serious character interact with Spider-Man - not that spidey cant be serious, but in just about every punisher appearance bro is Not Having A Good Time. Some people have said that he'd been 'disney-fied' but i dont see it. He still has the grit, the roughness, the swears, but in comparison to his interactions with Daredevil, Peter isn't trying to demonize Frank, so some more light-heartedness can be shown - which he has been seeing having in the past in his own show. PLUS the two are friends in the end! Frank helps pete after shooting him and keeps watch while he recovers in the hospital! and helps him get away! I really like their friendship. I dont like Frank's getup for the movie tho, the skull-vest looks really flat to me, and the skull looks a little faded, i just prefer the old one from the show :/
Overall I'd say it's def worth a theatre trip if you can make it, the big screen makes it look. and sound, so good :]
