Some quick sketch of Kuvira from yesterday. I think I’m gonna be late for Manly Monday again…
Hey guys, thanks for the Korvira stuff you send on my askbox! I certainly do not mind more haha~ I want to make a huge dump again so if you’ve got ideas and headcanons, hit me up fam.

Cute. Hiyori found it endearing that someone as tough as Kuvira would be so adamant about taking another picture. Though Hiyori had a feeling if she told Kuvira that she was cute, the brunette would end up receiving one of her glares.
“Here.” Hiyori positioned herself next to the taller women, held her cellphone away from them, and smiled. “Say cheese!” Flash! The camera went off and there appeared both their faces.
“Cheese...?”
Now why on earth would she say the name of a particular dairy product? But before Kuvira could fathom the oddity of such a word, Hiyori pulls her close and the accursed devices gives another flash.
The second photo was only a little better than the last, if only for the fact that Hiyori was beaming and looking like the proverbial sunshine in a cloudy day. Kuvira looked like she was in the middle of sneezing.
“...One more, or Raava help me, I will condemn cheese and all related dairy products.”
She watched the other practice, admiring the fluidity of Kuvira’s movements. Though undoubtedly they could have a martial use, they looked far more beautiful than the wholly utilitarian forms she’d been taught as a child, or seen the odd martial artist use. One more difference between their countries, she supposed.
“Thank you,” she murmured, surprised by the other’s candor. She hadn’t . It was only fair for her to offer the full truth of her background in return, she supposed. “I share the same sentiment about you,” she admitted. “Perhaps because you remind me of my king. My sister would have been drawn to you, I believe. Her name was Kyou Shou…” The same sister that, through her neglect, she’d killed. Kyou Shou; the elder sister that had rather drugged Kyou Kai and allowed her to live in a life of a shame rather than die in glory.
“She’s dead now, so that isn’t the best analogy, perhaps. Still, both her, and I, would believe the same. That, so long as you appreciate the sacrifice of others, remember them as you move forward, then their sacrifice was worth it. Sometimes, that’s all that the dead can ask for. To be remembered. Avenged, at times. And that would be enough.”
Hand resting on the hilt of the wooden sword that they’d replaced Ryokusui with, she spoke. “Would you mind if I practiced my forms, too? I usually do so in the forest, but it has been some time since I’ve met somebody like– well, like you. You remind of home, too. I think you would have been a force to fear, if you had lived in my time, in my world.”
“...My condolences for your sister.”
The pain of loss was a hollow one for Kuvira. She was the one abandoned by her birth parents when she was younger. If anyone should feel the pain of loss, it should be them but that was a highly unlikely possibility. Kuvira herself has not lost anyone significant, rather, it was her who willingly abandoned them. This would make sure she would avoid getting hurt no matter what happened. A tactician’s self-preservation at the price of her own heart hardening beyond recognizable feeling.
But here, with this young woman who was slowly becoming more than a stranger, Kuvira feels traces of warmth within her chest. Affection she long thought was gone starting to grow like a sapling nurtured by morning dew.
“I would be honored to practice alongside you.”
Kuvira gives Kyou Kai a small, rare smile.
“And that might be true. You might have every right to fear me in some other place or time but right here and right now, you are my friend. I value your presence as you have generously treasured mine.”

Nico was perhaps slightly intimidated by the older woman’s severe look, but she was always more than happy to discuss her idol charm – regardless as to whether or not the other person knew what they were about to get themselves into. “Of course it’s figurative…or is it?”
“The best way to explain it…hmm…I guess you’d call it charisma? People are just drawn to my complete and utter adorable self – I can’t blame them of course – because it’s not every day you see something this cute!” She tapped her chin pensively and nodded.
“Of course, I have to be super cute if I want to continue my career as an idol!”
“Charisma.”
Of course Kuvira knew what that was. She possessed it too, if her legions of followers were of any indication. But her version seemed different from what this little girl had. Idly, Kuvira remembers that one time Baatar Jr. teased her for being ‘too severe’ and ‘not cute at all’. She punched him in the side for what she deemed was an inappropriate comment and the young man was sent to the hospital wing for minor bruising. She felt terribly guilty afterwards but the topic was never brought up again.
“...I must admit not a lot of people I’ve encountered are as adorable as you.”
“Idol...? Like... an effigy? Don’t they burn those for certain traditional ceremonies? Or perhaps you’re referring to something else I am completely unfamiliar with.”

morgiana turns to the cat, a small smile on her face as she coos softly, snapping her fingers in a way to call the cat to her.
“here, kitty kitty.”
she keeps cooing, a soft smile still in place as she awaits for the woman to move forth and get the kitty. of course she has a plan for what will happen if she does not succeed in getting the cat, but for now she’ll go along with her plan.
she cooed again, “here, here, kitty kitty!”
it leaped from the tree into her arms, and she softly caught it, petting it’s back as she knew the stomach was not a good place to touch. she nuzzled it close to her, and then looked up to the woman.
Kuvira waited with bated breath, ready to spring into action if her plan goes awry. But it would appear she placed her faith on the right person as the cat did not just get distracted - the furball actually leapt from the tree on to the waiting girl’s arms. Maybe she was just too adorable that even the animal couldn’t resist leaving its perch.
“That’s... excellent. Job well done, young lady.”
Fluffy Jr. is swiftly reunited with its owner who showers them both with praises. Kuvira holds up her hand, however, and glances back at the girl, a small rare smile gracing her lips.
“Please, if anyone deserves credit it would be this young lady right here. If it wasn’t for her, your darling vermin- - I mean- - pet would still be up on that tree.”

He didn’t need to be a detective to have caught the acrimonious tone that dripped in this woman’s words. Clearly she had an aversion to sovereignty, though it was hardly his biggest concern in that moment. Bouncing unceremoniously in her arms as though he was nothing more than baggage she was stuck carrying, the Earl did his best to stay composed in spite of the situation.
“I will have you know, woman, that I am more than versed in combat, do not speak to me as though I am some snivelling useless child you scooped up! Had I my pistol I would have been more than—“ He started to retort, words biting as he all but spat them out, though the loud, shattering sound of gun fire silenced him immediately.
How ironic.
Feeling the woman freeze in her steps he spared a chance over his shoulder, not missing the telltale sign of staring down the barrel of a gun, though the pistol aimed their way looking nothing like the one he kept on him at all times back home.
What was even more perfect, was the reaction of his current ride. She seemed completely unaware of what the weapons even were though he knew better than to be surprised. Given the power she had displayed in the warehouse he could only imagine she too had been brought to this city from somewhere else… But he didn’t exactly have time to explain just how dangerous a situation this had become.
“Yes! They are called guns. I seemed to have lost mine when I arrived in this godforsaken town. They are extremely dangerous, do not let them hit you. They might be small but they can kill you with only one” He explained, oblivious to the shot that had grazed the woman’s leg.
Wishing he wasn’t being held up in the air like a carried target, the Earl struggled on her shoulder. “Now please, let me down at once before you are the death of me by holding me up to their perfect ai—” A strangled cry caught in his throat, cutting off his words as an unfortunately aimed bullet managed to lodge itself into his thigh.
“IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE OF THAT BLOODY EARTHQUAKE IN YOU, PLEASE USE IT NOW” He cried, burning pain throwing all left of his etiquette to the wind.
The acrid scent of smoke thickens with the smell of blood as both of them sustain injuries. But now that Kuvira had an idea of what they were up against, these small cuts would be the last bit of harm these thugs would ever inflict upon them.
“Another earthquake will be unnecessary.”
The emerald-eyed woman shifts, kicking the ground with her uninjured leg to trigger her seismic sense. As she earlier predicted, the warehouse was at least eighty percent metal. Most notably, the doors were alloys she can bend with little difficulty. Obviously disturbed by the sudden movement, the thugs around them begin aiming for another round. This one seemed to be the decisive hit as they all formed a tight circle around Kuvira and her ward, ensuring no escape.
“I suggest closing your eyes in case you’re particularly squeamish, my liege.”
The smile on Kuvira’s lips is wry as time seemed to slow down. Guns begin firing simultaneously with their bullets too quick for the human eyes to catch. But she did not need to see them. She felt every small piece of metal hurtling at them in half a second. A few quick hand gestures sends each and every bullet flying back into the barrel from whence they came, inducing a chain-reaction explosion. With their captors distracted, Kuvira runs to the nearest bolted door, shoving aside the stunned guards.
Another gesture of her hands - this set of movements more forceful than the last - wrenches the metal doors open, crumpling them like they were nothing but paper.
Kuvira continues to run until they were a mile or so away from the warehouse. Fatigue finally catches up with the former military dictator as she sets the young man down, the familiar pavements of the main city coming into view.

“Well lets see how it came out.”
Hiyori swiped the screen, tapped the little icon and…oh. Hiyori couldn’t help but giggle as she showed Kuvira the picture she took. “Well you didn’t take a picture of the ducks but close enough!”
The picture Kuvira ended up taking was none other than herself. And of course her expression was one of surprise and it ended up quite blurry too. Still, Hiyori gave her a reassuring smile.
“You just took a selfie!”
Kuvira’s frown deepens, a crease appearing between her prominent eyebrows.
“It looks hideous.”
She couldn’t care less what a ‘selfie’ was but this was absolutely unacceptable. To have her face looking so undignified, it was downright embarrassing. Kuvira wouldn’t consider herself as vain but certain standards still needed to be upheld. No exceptions.
“...Take a better one.”

morgiana looked at what the lady was pointing at.
a cat seemed to be stuck in a tree, and an old woman was making a ruckus about helping out with it. Morgiana turned back to the black haired lady, listening intently to the idea she had for rescueing said cat. Every so often she would nod.
it seemed like a good idea.
“it sounds like a good plan to me, miss. I dont quite get what you mean by innate adorability, but if i can use it to coerce the cat to me, then lets by all means use it.”
“Excellent.”
Kuvira steps closer to the tree. Above them, the cat gives another warning hiss. Clearly, Fluffy Jr. takes offense at being referred to as a mere object... or maybe the cat can sense Kuvira’s dangerous intent if things did not go according to plan.
“Now, do that ... thing you do with your hands and face. Attract the cat.”
The former military leader winces slightly at her choice of words but how else was she supposed to describe it? She can only hope the young woman understood what she was trying to say.
Agitation [open]
“Law enforcement sounds good,” she nods, as encouragingly as she knows how. The woman seems fit, almost right for it. Like she was born to stand vigil, like order was seeped in the blood running in her veins. She wouldn’t even look out of place as a soldier, ranking among thousands of others, even perhaps commanding them; Pearl’s seen enough during the war to know what the face of a leader looks like.
“The arts?” Pearl echoes, almost perking up. “Well, I don’t know much about jobs in the arts. But as a hobby of sorts— well, I’ve always admired human dancers…”
There were few human notions Pearl had allowed herself to become intrigued in: being a knight was one, because it seemed awfully romantic to dedicate every fibre of her being and existence to Rose and her cause, to serving and protecting, to living to die for her and all the nobility and chivalry that came with it. The grace and poise of human ballet had come much later, but it seemed from the start that it embodied every virtue that Pearl coveted; grace and poise, balance and strength.
She’d watched it grown and evolve as humans refined it over the centuries, and it became so much a part of her that she can’t imagine any way without it. It’s a part of the way she moves, the way she fights, the way she fuses… Which would have seemed silly, a few thousand years ago. But here she is.
Kuvira gives a slight chuckle.
“I may not look like it but I was a performer before entering the military.”
Although her memories of Suyin’s dance troupe are no longer as warm or happy as they used to be, they still remained one of the few things that gave her comfort.
Dance was the poetic translation of combat. Both required rigorous training and loads of patience but only dance had the capability to capture an audience’s heart and soul with movements entwined in music. Kuvira never thought of herself as graceful or soft but dance transformed her, made her feel like an entirely different person. More than a source of relief, dance was her escape. It reminded her of happier times. It made her realize what hope, what love would feel like no matter how faint or fleeting the sensation.
Dance was life.
“...I take it that you’re quite a patron of the arts as well? Have you danced in a show or a play?” Kuvira ventures carefully, not quite ready to reveal such an intimate part of herself.
Kuvira– the name sounded strange, foreign; and, if the way she could exert control over the landscape was any indication, then she was no simple human being. One of the boulder fragments had come to a rest near Kyou Kai’s foot, and she nudged it thoughtfully. At her first arrival, she might’ve been surprised by the other’s strange ability. Not so, any more. She’d seen stranger.
“My King aspires to unify all of China. Aspired. If the books I’ve seen in the library are any indication, then my king was indeed successful. If anything, my homeland is much like yours; plagued by malcontent, hunger, and incredible bloodshed. There isn’t a single child untainted by death, unlike in Hinamori.” Indeed, if a child lived to see adulthood, it was already considered a blessing. War orphans were aplenty, including her captain. Kyou Kai herself had created many in her time; and terrible as it sounded, she knew it was only a natural outgrowth of the world they had been born into. A world which no longer existed.
“Our country is divided by seven states, each with their own king. Border skirmishes are common– and indeed, a staple of life. Yet, Qin– my own state– seeks to solve this; my king wants to subjugate all of China, and by doing so, eliminate the need for such meaningless bloodshed. And I– I’ve dedicated myself to becoming a Great General under his service, in honour of my sister, and to stand at the side of my captain, Li Xin. And if I am to make use of my more– undesirable skills in order to achieve that, than so be it.”
Shaking her head, she turned to look at Kuvira, no hint of humour in her eyes. “You were a leader of men, yes? Honour in battle must have been something you desired. I apologize; I am no honourable warrior, nor a kindred spirit. I was an assassin by both nature and nurture; so long as it would save lives from my Hi Shin Unit, I would gladly play the role of a snake.”
“I am a leader, yes, but not quite as noble.”
Kuvira might hold herself in high regard but she is not immune to the insults and criticism thrown her way. Words were like pebbles, insignificant at first but destructive once accumulated. Downright painful if the thrower knew just where to hit.
“I’ve done things that many would consider wrong... tyrannical, almost.”
The re-education camps were a necessary evil that ensured she would have proper control over the towns and cities. What started out as an initiative to capture and detain bandits has turned into a dark hole where rogue benders were thrown in, never to be spoken of again. Then there was the spirit vine technology. It was a way to obtain renewable energy for all... but she used that power to create weapons. She did not regret her choices but that did not make them any more justifiable.
“But I understand your concern. And I do believe that is a sign of a strong leader. The ability to do whatever it takes to reach your goal, to protect those that are precious to you... It is admirable but not noble.”
Kuvira stretches her arms before holding them upwards in a graceful arc, her full weight shifting on to one foot. Poised like this she looked more like a performer rather than a fighter, her gaze lost on the horizon as regrets of the past melded with the present.
“...I betrayed my mentor. I left my home, my sworn duties in Zaofu just so I can become who I am today. Not a day goes by that I do not feel regret... but the pain and sacrifice ensure me that I am moving forward. Slowly but surely.”
She gives one swift spin, her hands unfurling like delicate petals on a lily before returning to her sides. Her expression is calm, forlorn almost.
“I apologize for burdening you with all of this. There’s just something about you that seems... familiar. I feel like I can talk to you about anything.”
’ —OF COURSE, I should mention. this radish was almost INCHES away from being pulverized by m’ female co-worker here— ’
and when the mute thump of something hitting the ground reaches his ears, he utters a low hum at the back of his throat, though upon seeing what exactly had made the sound, his gasps became audible. what was she thinking? cutting up the vegetable stock like that?
’ i-i-i-it’s okay, f-folks! there’s p-plenty more radishes to go around! ’
he quickly turns on his heel and points at the decapitated radish, index finger trembling slightly at the sheer GALL of the woman. nothing is said, instead his jaw hangs open, azure hues WIDE with unspoken questions.
“I’d say there’s plenty to go around for sure.”
Kuvira was too far gone from apologizing or maintaining a level head. The only reason why she was sticking around this place was because it was the first one that granted her employment. She could easily apply for something else, perhaps a more ideal job at the police station. They could overlook this one little infraction in the face of her better, greater military achievements. After all, one radish was nothing compared to a lifetime of highly acclaimed training.
Thinking that this might as well be her last few hours working in this godforsaken shop, who was she to deny the patrons a show? If it was a spectacle they want then it was a spectacle they would get.
A few more quick, efficient hand movements slices the radish into paper-thin consistency, leaving the young man holding nothing but the stump. A stunned silence hangs in the air as radish drifts all around them like odd snowflakes.
“There appears to be, how do you people say it, clean up at aisle four.”

Nico halted as the woman approached her, a rather severe look on her face. Was she feeling alright…? She placed her hand to her forehead as the others sentence registered in her mind. Shining? Aha! A wide grin spread across Nico’s face and she placed her hands on her hips, absolutely delighted by the woman’s reaction.
“I’m just fine! You’ve just been hit by Nico Ni’s love beam, and her irresistible charm has caught your attention. It’s okay, it happens all the time.” She placed one hand over her heart and nodded earnestly. “It’s not every day people witness someone as cute as me walk down the street, so I understand why it may have frightened you.”
“Nico Ni.. love beam..?”
Kuvira’s rather prominent eyebrows crease together. Was this girl talking about some sort of weapon? If it was in any way similar to the spirit vine cannon they were developing back home then this girl could be a valuable asset. She couldn’t afford to let her go so easily.
Hold on, did she just say ‘her irresistible charm’? So the beam was powered by... physical adorableness? What kind of advanced technology was this?
“I hope you’re speaking figuratively, young lady. Otherwise, I have a lot of questions to ask you.”

“I hardly see what number has to do with ability” He snapped. He wasn’t a fool, he was well aware that he was fighting a loosing fight. A trained marksman and skilled sword fighter were both worthless talents without the instrument needed to execute either one. Regardless, pride was a petulant mistress and the Earl wasn’t quite ready to admit he was in over his head without Sebastian.
When the woman spoke again however, it wasn’t with more condescending judgement. Instead she spoke with instruction, with a sharp tone as though she wasn’t a stranger to mid battle tutelage. However, before the boy could adjust his hands to follow her advice, something in her wording struck a cord. It seemed almost familiar, something Sebastian might say before unleashing hell with the power he wielded and be it only from instinct, he listened. Planting the cane firmly into ground
Something he was grateful for the moment the ground started to move. It wasn’t unlike an earthquake as the very floor beneath them seemed to mimic the waves on the ocean as it knocked his assailants off their feet. However the boy had no time to really appreciate the magnitude of what this woman had just accomplished before he was being tossed over her shoulders as though he was nothing more than a burlap sack of chimney sweepings.
“Well excuse me for having a small frame, it’s not exactly something I can help. Now unhand me at once! This is completely unacceptable, not to mention degrading! I am an Earl not a sack of rubbish; put me down immediately”

The acid in Kuvira’s tone is apparent as she continued to carry the boy around. If there was one thing she detested, it was pompous bastards who think of themselves above everyone else just because they happened to be born into a position of power. She was never a huge fan of the monarchy back home and that is not likely to change anytime soon.
“Well, your highness, this seems to be a rather dangerous situation so if you would just stay quiet and act like a proper sack- -”
A loud ‘bang’ makes Kuvira freeze. The thugs seem to have pulled out their weapons - strange, small devices that create the loudest, most annoying noise she has ever heard. Worse, she smelled smoke and something else acrid that hinted at more bad news.
“...Spirits.”
She narrowly avoids getting hit by yet another shot from the strange weapon, the edge of her dress singed and blackened by the impact. This was dangerous. They had to get out of here- -
The exit is blocked by at least a dozen more thugs. She could earthbend them a tunnel out but those odd little weapons made her wary. The size couldn’t indicate they could do much damage but appearances can certainly be fooling. Before she could come up with another plan, one of the thugs fires directly at them. The shot grazes her leg, white hot pain erupting from the cut. It distracts her only for a while, though, as something else catches her attention.
“Boy, tell me. Are they shooting at us with metal objects?”

morgiana went about her day like usual.
she woke up with a sigh, tumbling out of bed in a sleepy form of herself, taking a nice relaxing shower and finally, she donned on her favorite outfit by far since coming to the peculiar land: her shorts, paired with tights and tall boots, as well as a form fitting long sleeve shirt and an infinity scarf. her style had changed a bit since her first day here.
a lady came up to her, asking about how animals felt about her.
why? she thought to herself. was the lady in need of assistance? also, how old was she in comparison to morgiana herself, since she called her young lady?
nonetheless, she nodded, “yes, i would say animals like me. and i also like animals. is there something wrong, miss?”
“That thing.”
Kuvira points to the hissing hairball clinging to the tree branch like its life depended on it. (And in a sense, it did.) Beside her, the cat’s owner gives a rather dramatic gasp at having ‘her precious Fluffy Jr. being referred to as a thing, why Fluffy Jr. was practically part of the family- -’
Kuvira gives another sigh. The sooner they can get this over with, the better.
“It refuses to be let down. Perhaps you can distract it with your...”
The older woman gives the girl a quick once over.
“... innate adorability while I try to grab it from behind. Sounds like a good plan to you? Unless you have other suggestions that will settle this quickly and efficiently.”
Kyou Kai listened to the woman speak without comment; it wasn’t so much out of disinterest, but a desire to truly hear, and by doing so, understand, the woman. It was unexpected, but here, of all places, it seemed that she had stumbled upon somebody who bore similar concerns.
“I, too… I too was once a soldier,” she began, haltingly. Since arriving here, she hadn’t divulged her origin to very many—yet it was all too easy to trust in this woman. Perhaps because of certain similarities: an intense dissatisfaction with the sheer dullness of the twin cities. The lack of resistance of locals against their fate. Oh, she had heard of their version of fate: it was painfully trite.
”I am Kyou Kai, formerly part of Clan Shiyuu. Three-thousand man commander in Ei Sei’s army, lieutenant of the Hi Shin Unit. I once scaled mountains to bring victory to my King and myself; once rode horses through human forests, cutting bodies down like swathes of corn, my men thundering at my heels.”
Though she hadn’t spoken the names in months, they rolled off her tongue easily. It felt comforting to use the language of her homeland, even if it was only in the names itself. Even if Kyou Kai wasn’t one to give into emotions so easily, the very thought of how helpless she was in the face of the town’s mysterious curse had sent her mind back into a familiar turmoil. She tried her very best to affect a mild tone, but there was no disguising the hint of bitterness that ran throughout it all.
“And now, captain— I guide tourists through mountains, and perform party tricks for children to watch in the horse farm. How far I’ve come, indeed. Yet—there is no way to escape; I’ve tried time and time again.” It was pathetic! Not that she would admit to it, but that was exactly what it was. “It’s strange, isn’t it? Speaking to you almost makes me feel like I’m back in my own time. I must thank you for that.”
“Please, just call me Kuvira. Although my followers often hailed me as the Great Uniter.”
The emerald-eyed woman’s tone was almost teasing, a great shift from how hard and bitter she sounded just a few moments prior. She was right to find this young woman - Kyou Kai - interesting. Although most of what she mentioned was unfamiliar, the sentiment was similar to her own. Someone raised in times of conflict with a heart hardened by challenges that would have made any person - man or woman - fall to their knees. But they were resilient, unbreakable. And for that they became strong, formidable individuals.
“... There is great strife where I come from. With the monarchy fallen and the Avatar missing, my people are in disarray. Bandits, looters, terrorists attacking hundreds of towns and cities. It was horrible.”
Kuvira throws her gaze out to the scenery before them - thick forests surrounded by rocky mountain ridges, the sky turning a multitude of oranges and reds as sunset approaches. It was truly a sight to behold but it also made her miss home more than ever.
“We - that is my team and I - set out to restore order. It took us three years but we were finally close to uniting the Earth Empire. We were creating a weapon that can ensure long-lasting peace but then... this had to happen.”
