Some advice to the trans and intersex Kansans who suddenly had their IDs invalidated from a nonbinary Hoosier who went through something similar last year
1. If you have a form of Federal or State issued ID that you haven’t corrected yet, use that as your main form of ID from now until whenever we’re out of this mess.
2. Get new IDs to replace the invalidated ones ASAP. Yes, they will be incorrect. Yes, they may out you. Yes, I know this is dangerous and unfair (trust me, I have never had the luxury of stealth and only briefly had the luxury of my ID not misrepresenting me). But it is more dangerous to not have an ID that will allow you to vote, travel, get a job, rent, receive healthcare, etc. Get an incorrect ID if that’s what it takes to do those things because you need to do those things to survive.
3. Grieve. Mourn. Be Angry. Feel all the feelings you need to. This is upsetting. This is scary. But remember that you are not alone in this. Reach out, even if it’s scary, even if you think you will let down. There are people out there who will support you but you will never find them if you don’t look.
4. If this is an option for you, talk to a lawyer about the specifics of your situation. Even if you can’t talk to a lawyer, make a plan for how you are going to navigate having an incorrect ID. What resources do you need, what people can you rely on, what are the specific problems you might run into, what options you have. There probably isn’t a one size fits all solution so make alternate plans as well.
5. If it helps, here in Indiana we were temporarily able to argue that this kind of behavior from our State government was a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment and our privacy. I hope just knowing that there is some legal precedent for fighting back against this kind of thing may give you some hope.

The new Kansas law isn't based on visual scrutiny of whether people pass!! It is based on Kansas having a list of people who have changed their gender marker, as evidenced by the letters they sent out! The passingest hypothetical trans guy is going to get the same driving without a license conviction as the clockiest hypothetical trans woman when he gets pulled over for a broken taillight and the cop runs his (now revoked) license through the computer. This is exactly what we've been talking about when we say that passing does not stop people from experiencing transphobia.
Gonna keep adding this is every time I see this behavior, stop disrespecting racialized groups by positioning trans people as a whole on a racialized axis; namely, positioning trans women as the "racialized" group and all other trans people as the "white oppressors" by claiming that other trans people discussing our oppression is akin to the perpetuation of white supremacy. It is not and it's disrespectful and ignorant of you to treat gender and race as the same or comparable regarding material manifestations of oppression.
Attempting to terminate conversations about facets of transphobia with language that is inherently anti-intersectional for it's blatant disregard of many identity intersections, is exactly the childish divisive behavior this post is begging to end. Because we're all dying. We've been saying for years that we are all faggots in the eyes of the state, and Kansas definitely doesn't see a difference. It's all sexual deviance to Kansas. Yes. Anyone trans is at equal risk of getting pulled over and charged with Invalid ID. But what happens next? You have to go to court. In court, your penalty is entirely up to the judge. The judge chooses whether your fine is $1000 or $250, whether you get 5 days in jail or 90 days or just probation, whether to reduce your charges or tack more on.
Every time I’ve been to traffic court, I’ve had the privilege to be able to present an image of a clean, professional, contrite young white man, and every time, the judge has used his purview to unilaterally reduce my charges and apply the minimum penalties. Black and clocky defendants do not get the same courtesy!
We’re all faggots in the eyes of the state, but some of us are faggier than others. Watch out for the least among you and do not pretend we all have the same level of difficulty.

hey so i read part of the student's essay and i want to add a few things:
it was a 0 out of 25 points. that's not even a huge deal.
she only wrote 650 words.
the girl didn't do the actual assignment; she just wrote what she felt like and submitted it.
the class was a PSYCHOLOGY course yet her essay was about her religious beliefs and provided no citations or psychological basis. she simply insisted her argument was true because the bible supposedly says so.
her entire essay is a mindless rant about how strict gender roles must be upheld and trans people are "demonic"
her writing—and i cannot stress this enough—is on par with that of a child who doesn't want to do an assignment. it's so bad i genuinely thought i was reading a satire article.
the student is a fucking college JUNIOR writing like a 10-year-old. she is also a psychology MAJOR who thinks everything in the bible is literal and that her religion is the only source anyone needs. this is someone who intends to go into mental health care. she is dangerously bigoted and ignorant, and her professor saw this and was punished for grading accordingly.
here's a line from her essay:
"Women naturally want to do womanly things because God created us with those womanly desires in our hearts. The same goes for men. God created men in the image of His courage and strength, and He created women in the image of His beauty."
here's her teacher's reasoning for the grade:
“[I am] not deducting points because you have certain beliefs" but rather because the paper "does not answer the questions for this assignment, contradicts itself, heavily uses personal ideology over empirical evidence in a scientific class and is at times offensive."
the girl is a hate-filled bigot. she is a white christian girl who is now being championed by fox news and turning point usa while her professor sits on fucking forced leave. this is disgusting.
