[CHARITY] Shoma and Itsuki visited a foster home for children on the 14th of December 2018, here is the report from the foster home (as ever neither Japanese nor English are my first language thus mistakes might be present)

Shoma and Itsuki visited us.

The Uno family continues to support us.

They’ve also had time to interact with the children.

There were children who were nervous or impervious, however, everyone was delighted to receive signs and handshakes.

As a staff, seeing “A” who doesn’t show his emotions much receive a sign with an unprecedented smile was impressive.

The women in the staff and the children were delighted by the handsome brothers.

I think the children wish to become people like them, and that by increasing the number of people who wish to become models, dreams and hopes, connect in incentives.

Sad update everyone, Tama recently passed away… An estimated 3,000 people, including railway officials, attended Tama the cat’s funeral on Sunday, days after she died of heart failure aged 16. [x]

Nitama, already now a mature cat (born 2010), has a protege named Yontama (fourth Tama, b. 2016).  There is no information available for either the physical befellment or tragic self-disgrace which has removed Santama from contention.

okay but actually what happened to santama (or sun-tama-tama, which is her name because it’s a pun on santama) was that she was basically sent to train for the position in okayama and they liked her so much they refused to send her back

“Sun-tama-tama” (a pun off of “Santama”, lit. “third Tama”) was a calico cat sent for training in Okayama. Sun-tama-tama was considered as a candidate for Tama’s successor, but the Okayama Public Relations representative who had been caring for Sun-tama-tama refused to give the cat up writing, “I will not let go of this child, she will stay in Okayama.” [25]

As of September 2018, Sun-tama-tama is working as the stationmaster in Naka-ku, Okayama and appears occasionally on Tama’s Twitter account.

It’s called copula deletion, or zero copula. Many languages and dialects, including Ancient Greek and Russian, delete the copula (the verb to be) when the context is obvious.

So an utterance like “you a bitch” in AAVE is not an example of a misused you, but an example of a sentence that deletes the copular verb (are), which is a perfectly valid thing to do in that dialect, just as deleting an /r/ after a vowel is a perfectly valid thing to do in an upper-class British dialect.

What’s more, it’s been shown that copula deletion occurs in AAVE exactly in those contexts where copula contraction occurs in so-called “Standard American English.” That is, the basic sentence “You are great” can become “You’re great” in SAE and “You great” in AAVE, but “I know who you are” cannot become “I know who you’re” in SAE, and according to reports, neither can you get “I know who you” in AAVE.

In other words, AAVE is a set of grammatical rules just as complex and systematic as SAE, and the widespread belief that it is not is nothing more than yet another manifestation of deeply internalized racism.

As Japan’s top skaters, Uno Shoma and Miyahara Satoko are showing success on the world stage. They are both the same age, and they both earned medals at their first Grand Prix Final appearance. They share with us their thoughts heading into New Year on Ice!

The two of you will be performing as star skaters in New Year on Ice (NYOI). You’re both currently in the same grade—third year of high school, right? How old were you when you first met? Uno: Since Novice Nationals. We were in third grade. I don’t remember it though. (Laughs)

Blog post: Sorry to have kept you waiting!

I haven’t kept in touch in a while! 

Sorry I haven’t updated in so long! 

There have been many events from the last time I updated and now. 

First of all, Fantasy On Ice.

I only skated at the Makuhari show; but it was so fun, I thought I wanted to skate at all of them! By the time it ended, I was already missing it. 

It was a valuable experience to collaborate with the artists of the show, as well as to co-star with the other skaters. I’ve learned many things. 

Then there was the Olympic commemorative event, Heroes and Future in Nagano. 

Among the presents I’ve received, there was this portret of me. Medo-chan took this photo. 😝

This ice show was another opportunity to learn valuable things alongside Olympic legends. 

After finishing the two shows, I once again felt the depth and the fun of skating and it stimulated me to keep giving my best! 

In order to get a new short program, I went to train in Canada from the end of the previous month to the other day. 

I think it’s a genre that hasn’t been used before. It’s a big challenge for me, but I’ve been practicing to give out all my best and show you a new me! 

I also went to the Cricket Club and was happy about this reunion. We took a picture!

On an off day, I made my nails for the first time overseas! 

It’s simple and it’s only one color. 💖

Finally, the Grand Prix assignments have been decided and the new season is coming closer. I’m going to work hard to show everyone the new power-up me!

Daisuke Takahashi, coming back to competition after 4 years, has set Japanese Nationals in December as his current goal. Although he says “I don’t think I can win at all” when it comes to competing against Olympic gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu or silver medalist Shoma Uno, he says with hope: “I want to be in the last group at Nationals and be with them during 6 minute practice and official practice.”

“I couldn’t move on entirely”

- Please tell us why you have made this decision and since when have you been thinking about coming back.

I made the decision that I wanted to come back after Nationals last year (2017). Since I retired 4 years ago, I went to New York, did work for the media, met a lot of people and as I watched people working at the front line* (not sure what he meant), I started to think little by little “is this really what I want to do.”

Whether it was skaters fighting for a spot at the Olympics, every person was working hard with their own thoughts and goals. Before I retired, I wanted to compete internationally, but seeing all of them trying their very best to leave something remarkable at Nationals moved me, and also made me think “that’s also another way of competing.” Until now, I thought I didn’t need to compete if I can’t win but I realized it’s also something remarkable to compete for yourself.
