Stop accessorizing Korean language 2k16
âOppa,â âjinjja,â âsarang,â âgomawoyo,â âunnie,â âoetteoke,â and every single other single word that you know in Korean and use entirely outside the context of the rest of the Korean language is a total bastardizaton of it. There are subtleties and nuances to the language which you neglect and essentially illustrate are unimportant to you when you use these words because you want to sound cute or use the language as a fad. This applies to the addition of â-euâ at the ends of words to mock Korean pronunciation. Asian ethnicities in general (and many others) have been historically and contemporarily mocked and ridiculed for their pronunciation, while English speakers are praised for speaking one sentence improperly and with poor pronunciation. Itâs Eurocentric and itâs bullshit and accessorizing other languages just contributes to it. Itâs treating the language and culture half-heartedly, as something unimportant, at least not important enough to you to actually invest time in properly understanding. It is disrespectful and cursory. Itâs the same shit that happens with Japanese language. Either take the time to learn the language or use your own. You donât get to pick random words you donât fully understand, nor do you, as non-Koreans, get to use relationship words such as âoppaâ and âunnieâ which denote cultural relationship stratifications which you are just not a part of if you are not Korean. Please respect the language and the culture and stop reducing it to some sort of commodity.
âCultural appropriation is the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of another culture. Cultural appropriation is seen as controversial, even harmful, notably when the cultural property of a minority group is used by members of the dominant culture without the consent of the members of the originating culture; this is seen as misappropriation and a violation of intellectual property rights. According to critics of the practice, cultural (mis)appropriation differs from acculturation, assimilation, or cultural exchange in that the âappropriationâ or âmisappropriationâ refers to the adoption of these cultural elements in a colonial manner: elements are copied from a minority culture by members of the dominant culture, and these elements are used outside of their original cultural contextâsometimes even against the expressed, stated wishes of representatives of the originating culture.â
This is the difference between telling a non-English speaker to learn English or leave the country and telling an English speaker to bother to learn whichever language it is they want to participate in beyond a casual, single word usage that misappropriates what the word means or intends.
things you shouldn't say to people with ADHD/about ADHD
Ok so I see a lot of posts like âplease understand you shouldnât say/do this to people with anxiety/depression,â but I never see one for ADHD so Iâm making one. Please understand I myself have ADHD and am currently unmedicated so while I will try to keep it short it may end up getting a bit long. I also would ask that you reblog although I will not look down on you if you donât - it is a bit hard to spread awareness if no one does any actual spreading and honestly ADHD people tend to be the only ones who talk about it at all.
- (Said to me by a classmate) âYou donât need medication, youâre just suppressing your true self!â No we arenât and yes we do. The level of severity varies from person to person, but I personally *literally am unable to function around people without it*, let alone deal with school. - (Directly after previous quote) âYeah youâre not the only ADHD person to tell me X was wrong, butâŠâ Well perhaps the ADHD people know more about their own brain than a neurotypical person, hmm? - (Actual comment on a steven universe episode) âlol he must be ADHD, no one cares about the stupid book we wanna hear about the gem history!â (or just, âwow they are enthusiastic about a thing, must be ADHD!â) Let me get this clear. Enthusiasm about something DOES NOT equal ADHD. ADHD is always inattentivity, but not always hyperactivity (ADD is ADHD without hyperactivity), and even when someone does have hyperactivity it is not the same as being enthusiastic about something! - âlol I totally zoned out in that boring class, Iâm so ADHD! *isnât actually ADHD*â Does this one need explaining? ADHD is the literal INABILITY to pay attention, even if you are trying to! Getting distracted once - especially if youâre not really trying to pay attention - does not make you ADHD! - âI wonât repeat myself because you should have been listening and if you werenât you obviously donât care.â This is honestly one of the most terrifying things I can hear because no matter how hard I try to pay attention I get distracted by something - I frequently realize Iâve been focusing so much on the fact I need to pay attention that Iâm missing what the person is saying! If an ADHD person asks you to repeat something, please donât assume they donât care about what you said - we do, I promise, and thatâs why weâre asking you to say it again. - âBut you dont act ADHD! You donât *cites ridiculous stereotype such as getting distracted by a butterfly*!â âŠDoes this one need explaining? - âADHD isnât a real problem, stop whining. Itâs just an excuse to pump kids full of drugs, not an actual disorder.â Well then would you like to take it from me? Try living in my brain for a week, or hell, even a DAY, and see if you still think it isnât a significant problem! - âWow your meds really help you focus? Can I borrow some?â NO! ADHD medications, such as amphetamines and methylphenidates, are controlled substances and illegal to take without a prescription! They also affect ADHD brains differently from neurotypical brains. What is good for us is not necessarily good for you, and also itâs illegal which should really be your primary concern here. - Not a quote but just something to keep in mind, as well as for ADHD people who havenât heard of it - Even many ADHD people havenât heard of this, but most (not all) ADHD people also suffer from something called rejection sensitive dysphoria, which means rejection affects us more easily than others (dysphoria means âunable to bear.â) This is because of the mental hyperarousal caused by ADHD, which stimulants do not help with although there is medication for it. The severity of this can vary, from mild (like my mom) up to almost completely controlling your life (like me and my dad.) This even applies to friendly teasing for some people, so just⊠keep that in mind, ok?
Thank you for reading and again I would very much appreciate it if you were to reblog, although I will not look down on you if you do not - this isnât one of those âreblog or elseâ posts! ADHD is a serious problem and I donât think very many non-ADHD people know much about it - even other neurodivergent groups frequently dismiss ADHD as not being serious, but it is and I want people to understand and possibly help other ADHD people not feel as alone as I frequently do. If you want to know more, additudemag.com as well as its magazine (ADDitude) are a fabulous source of information! Thank you!
bambam, a boy who barely gets to see his family and has to deal with hate being thrown at him and who lost his father at a young age, calls markâs dad âdaddyâ bc heâs a father figure to him and some ppl have to make it nasty and sexual and cause him to tweet trying to explain himself and telling them to stop TWICE bc they wouldnât stop the first time. like will u leave bambam alone jfc
expectation vs. reality
Akira Armstrong was in two BeyoncĂ© videos, but couldnât find an agent to represent her as a professional dancer because of her size. To change the narrative around what a dancerâs body should look like, Akira started her own dance company, made up of plus-size dancers. âPretty Big Movementâ is destroying dancer stereotypes, one routine at a time.
This is so needed
