OOAK Ch. 4 - Sneak Peak

Pairing: Kyle Rayner x Batsis!Reader A/N: Here is a sneak peak of the upcoming chapter for the batsis!reader x Kyle series. I switched up the story many many times and had rewritten the upcoming chapters.... highkey starting fresh with what's yet to come. “Do you plan on reaching out to your family?” Kyle asked as he inhaled the remainder of his pastry. You choked on your drink, sputtering out nonsense.

“Going for the heavy hitters, I see.”

He shrugged, “Might as well. The topic was bound to come up again. Why not now? I’d rather discuss it now before I go back to the League and run into them.”

If it were up to you, you wouldn’t want to face them for at least another century. Part of it was fear, of what they might uncover and find, but another part was life you had built, one you weren’t ready to surrender just yet.

You had every right to a little selfishness, especially when it came to this. You carved this life, built it brick by brick, kept it hidden and fiercely protected. After everything you’ve done, everything it took to get to this point, wasn’t the whole point to finally be safe, to remain unseen?

“I honestly don’t know if I can bring myself to do it,” you admitted, leaning heavily into Kyle’s side. “I mean… it’s not like I haven’t reached out before. Sure, it’s different than meeting up with them face to face, but at least it was something.”

“That’s him,” you said, rising from your seat and stepping closer, eyes locked on the image. “He’s the one who took it.”

Sormael joined you, his posture rigid. “He’s just a middleman. Hired to acquire the weapon and deliver it to his employer…” He paused, then finished, “Back to Gotham.”

Your body went still, tension locking every muscle in place. “I see.”

“I know what I’m asking of you,” he continued, voice measured. “This puts you at risk. But you’re the only one I trust to see this through. That weapon cannot be allowed to surface. It has to be destroyed, no matter the cost.” His hand came to rest on your shoulder, giving it a firm squeeze. “You’ll have full jurisdiction. If you need support, we can deploy a team. Though… local authorities would prefer you coordinate with your former colleagues.”

A dry scoff left you. “Of course they would.”

“That’s a last resort,” Sormael added quickly. “Only if absolutely necessary. There’s a chance you won’t have to see them at all.”

You exhaled slowly, steadying yourself. “Understood. I’ll do what I can. I accept.”

If there was one constant in your life, it was Eddie Munson. You met at four years old and were inseparable ever since—Byers and Munson, a chaotic duo and certified menaces to society.

You stood by him when his mom passed and again when his dad went to prison, leading him to move in with Uncle Wayne. And he was there for you through every hardship Lonnie put you and your brothers through, your unwavering anchor.

When Eddie formed a band in middle school, you were their number one fan. By freshman year, one school dance was all it took for your friendship to evolve into something more. He insisted on keeping it quiet, afraid of backlash—but that never stopped you from being by his side.

High school wasn’t all bad, not with Eddie’s dungeons & dragons club taking over your afternoons. He’d introduced you to the game when you were younger. He was the reason you had begun playing it in the first place introducing it to your youngest brother Will, then later to his friend Dustin who you babysat everyday after school. 

Everything changed senior year when Will vanished. You spent every moment searching for him, Dustin never leaving your side as his mom had asked of you. By the time Will came back, your world—and your sense of safety—had shifted.

You graduated, half-hoping Eddie would be there beside you. He wasn’t—but you did convince him to re-enroll. That night, after the graduation party, he proposed in your living room with help from your family.

You chose community college and part-time work to save for the small, intimate wedding you’d both dreamed of. Just your family, Uncle Wayne, and a quiet winter ceremony—despite your mom wishing for a summer one. You wanted it done before leaving for university in the spring. Short, sweet, and perfect.

Exactly what your family needed after what had happened that past fall, especially your mother who had just lost Bob who you’d grown to care for dearly. Shortly after, you moved in with Eddie and Wayne before packing and traveling far to university.

Every spare moment was spent writing letters or calling Eddie. When summer break came around, you returned home, and the two of you finally had your long-overdue honeymoon: a spontaneous road trip filled with laughter, bad motel coffee, and matching tattoos to mark the moment.

After you got back, your family shared news that they’d decided to move to California. Before returning to campus for fall term, you made sure to tell Eddie and Wayne— ‘if you ever need anything, call me.’

But that promise unraveled during finals week of your last semester of school. Exhausted after your last exam, you barely hit your dorm bed before the phone rang. It was Dustin. His voice was tight—something had happened with Max. You needed to come home. Now.

You threw everything into your car and hit the road, barely stopping to breathe. Three days and too many gas station coffees later, you finally pulled up to the cabin. Your heart stopped at the sight of your mom standing on the porch—beside her was Hopper.

You froze, disbelief washing over you as tears welled in your eyes. “Hopper?” you called out, voice cracking. “But—how are you here?”

He turned toward you slowly, leaning slightly into your mom for balance. “Kid?” he said, as if making sure it was really you.

Your body moved before your brain could catch up. You ran to him, crashing into his arms and holding on like he might disappear again. He wrapped you in a steady embrace, one large hand cradling the back of your head as quiet sobs escaped your chest.

“I’m back,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “It’s okay now. You’re okay.”

He rubbed slow, soothing circles across your back while you let yourself breathe again—for the first time in what felt like forever.

You only pulled away when you heard your name being called.

“Hey,” came a quieter voice.

It was Max, standing in the doorway on crutches, a cast on her leg and bruises painting her arms. She looked exhausted—pale, eyes rimmed with fatigue—but she still managed the ghost of a smile. Lucas was standing by her side, a look of relief washing over his face.

You hurried toward her, briefly pulled into a few hugs from your family along the way. When you finally reached her, you wrapped your arms around her gently.

“Max,” you whispered. “What happened? Dustin called me out of nowhere and said you were in trouble—what the hell happened?”

She leaned into you, her usual sarcasm returning just enough to make you smile.

“Long story short?” she muttered. “Never leave me alone with these doofuses again.”

You laughed softly at Max’s comment, the sound wet with relief. “Noted. No more leaving you with the gremlins.”

She leaned her head on your shoulder for a beat longer before pulling away, nodding toward the cabin. “C’mon. Everyone else is inside. Dustin has been waiting on you for ages.”

Lucas nodded at you with a soft, “Hey, stranger,” before offering a careful hug, mindful of your emotions and probably still carrying his own.

“Hey yourself,” you replied, patting his back. “You alright?”

“As much as I can be,” he said with a tired smile.

Inside, the cabin was buzzing with different conversations, they all were catching up with your family who had arrived prior to you. The moment you stepped through the doorway, every head turned.

El’s face lit up with a warm smile as she crossed the room and tucked herself into your arms. She’d grown—not just taller, but stronger, calmer. You could feel it in the way she held you.

“I missed you,” she said quietly.

“I missed you too, El.”

Then there was Mike, hovering awkwardly nearby until you yanked him into a hug.

“You don’t get to act too cool for hugs. Not today.”

He laughed. “Fair enough.”

Then Steve and Robin pulled you into a tight hug together, voices muffled into your shoulders. You couldn’t make out what exactly they were saying but you could make out, “Please never leave us again.”

And finally, Dustin practically tackled you, arms tight and excited around your shoulders. “I knew you’d come! I told them!”

You laughed. “Dustin, I was in the middle of my last final—do you ever not call during chaos?”

“This is chaos,” he said, half-joking. “But I’m glad you’re here.”

“I said I’d always show up when it matters, didn’t I?” You smiled, brushing a tear from your cheek as the weight of the moment settled over you. All of them—older, a little bruised, but safe. Still together.

You glanced around at the familiar faces, the familiar walls. Everything was the same and completely different all at once.

The rest of your family had shuffled back into the cabin with the rest of you.

“How bad was it?” you asked finally, voice low.

The mood shifted.

The kids exchanged glances, and Max exhaled slowly beside you. “It was... bad. Vecna bad.”

“It’s... complicated,” she said, her voice quieter now. “A lot happened while you were gone.”

“Like what?” you asked gently. “What aren’t you telling me?”

Max hesitated, then muttered, “There’s this… thing. A guy. Kind of. I don’t know how to explain it, but… he’s powerful. Dangerous. Worse than anything we've dealt with before.”

Your stomach twisted. “Wait—worse than the Mind Flayer?”

They nodded. Even El looked away for a second.

“What’s his name?” you asked, barely above a whisper.

Max’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Vecna.”

You blinked. “Vecna? Like… from D&D?”

“Yeah,” Dustin muttered. “Except he’s very real. And he nearly—” He stopped himself, jaw tightening.

You looked at Max again—really looked. The cast, the bruises, the deep exhaustion in her eyes. “He hurt you?”

“I’m still here,” she said with a small shrug. “That’s what matters.”

You didn’t respond right away. Just reached for her hand, holding it gently. “Okay,” you said, even though nothing felt okay. “Okay.”

You exhaled and scanned the room again. That’s when it hit you—Dustin looked... wrecked. More than just tired. He was pale and twitchy, like he was carrying something he hadn’t said out loud.

“Alright,” you said, trying to keep your voice steady. “Does someone want to explain why Dustin looks like he just walked through fire? You all look rough, but he looks like he’s been emotionally steamrolled.”

Everyone hesitated.

Dustin’s eyes dropped to the floor. His shoulders curled in slightly, like he was trying to make himself smaller.

Finally, Robin sighed. “Dustin has this friend from the school’s club he’s in. His name is Eddie.”

Your breath caught. The mention of his name hit like a brick to the chest. You tensed, every worst-case scenario racing through your mind.

Max looked down, her voice strained. “Eddie… he got hurt. Really bad. During everything that happened with Vecna. He… stayed behind to buy us time. Fought off this swarm of—” She hesitated, as if even saying it sounded ridiculous. “—demobats.”

“Demobats?” you echoed, the word foreign and terrifying.

“They were like... winged creatures,” Steve added quietly. “From the Upside Down. Completely new. Vicious. We’d never seen anything like them.”

Dustin spoke again, his voice hoarse. “He said he wasn’t going to run this time. Stayed behind and fought them off. He… he almost didn’t make it.”

You went still.

From somewhere behind you, you heard your mother let out a quiet gasp. But you couldn’t turn. Couldn’t speak. Your heart was pounding too loudly.

“Wait,” you said slowly, carefully. “Nearly?”

Dustin nodded. “He made it. Barely. He’s recovering, but it’s been slow. Physically, and... mentally.”

Your pulse was deafening in your ears. “Where is he?”

Dustin gave a small nod. “Yeah. He made it. Barely. He’s alive, but he’s still healing. It’s… it’s been rough. He hasn’t really wanted to see anyone.”

You swallowed hard. “Where is he?”

“In the back,” Dustin said, his brow furrowed. “He’s resting in the guest room.”

You didn’t wait. Your legs were already moving, hands trembling at your sides as you crossed the room. The moment you reached the bedroom door, you pushed it open without hesitation.

There he was.

Eddie lay in the bed, bandaged and bruised, his skin pale beneath the low light. He was awake, barely, his chest rising and falling with shallow breaths. Pain was etched deep into his features—but he was alive.

“Eddie,” you whispered, stepping forward. And then you were at his side, falling to your knees and pulling him into a kiss before you could stop yourself.

He flinched in surprise, but the moment his brain caught up, his hand weakly found your cheek, holding you there like he couldn’t believe you were real.

“Wait—wait, wait!” came a voice from the hallway behind you.

Dustin’s head poked through the doorway, wide-eyed. “You two are—? Like, together-together? As in dating?!”

You broke the kiss and leaned back, still close to Eddie, your hand resting gently against his chest.

Without a word, you lifted your left hand, the gold band on your finger catching the light.

Eddie gave a tired, crooked grin. “Married, actually.”

The silence that followed could’ve rivaled a funeral.

“Married?!” Robin practically shrieked. “Like… actual wedding rings and vows and legal paperwork married?!”

“Wait—wait,” Steve said, eyes wide, pointing between you and Eddie like he was trying to solve a math problem in real time. “You’ve been married this whole time? And you just… never told us?”

Eddie gave a weak little shrug, his hand still holding yours like a lifeline. “Didn’t exactly come up between fighting demonic hell-creatures and avoiding small-town pitchfork mobs.”

Robin turned sharply to your family. “You knew about this?!”

Jonathan smirked. “I was the best man.”

“Mom cried through the whole thing,” Will added with a small smile. “It was really sweet.”

“I made the cake,” Joyce said from the hall with her arms crossed, clearly trying and failing to contain her amusement.

Robin’s jaw dropped. “Everybody knew?!”

“Not everybody,” Eddie mumbled, still dazed but grinning now. “Just the people who wouldn’t accidentally blurt it out during class or in the middle of Hellfire.”

Steve laughed, “And this whole time I was wondering when you were going to man up and ask her out on a date. The two of you always were too close in school.”

You couldn’t help laughing—quiet, a little tearful, but real. Relief had finally started to settle in, replacing the shock and fear with something lighter.

Robin flopped dramatically onto the couch just outside the bedroom door. “I can’t believe I wasn’t invited to your wedding.”

“You would’ve tried to DJ with a walkman and a car battery,” Eddie murmured from the bed.

“And it would’ve been iconic!” Robin shouted.

Steve folded his arms. “Okay, but seriously, no bachelor party? No reception? No groomsmen suits?”

“There was a reception,” Joyce said with a soft smile. “Small, in our backyard. Just family and Wayne. They didn’t want a big thing.”

“And I was leaving for university,” you added, brushing your thumb across Eddie’s knuckles. “Didn’t have time or money for anything flashy. We were planning a second celebration when things calmed down.”

Max, who had been quiet all this time, finally stepped forward on her crutches. “You two really went and got married while the rest of us were still figuring out how to pass classes.”

You smiled up at her. “When you know, you know.”

She rolled her eyes, but she was smiling too.

There was a moment of warm, stunned quiet before Steve clapped his hands once. “Well, now that I’ve emotionally processed that Eddie freakin’ Munson is married to someone with a functioning moral compass, I’m making myself useful. Anyone else need coffee?”

“Second pot, Harrington,” Hopper called. “And make it strong.”

As Steve retreated to the kitchen and the room started buzzing again, you looked back down at Eddie. His eyes were heavy with exhaustion but full of something softer. Something like peace.

“You came,” he whispered, almost to himself.

“Of course I did,” you said gently, brushing his curls back from his face. “I always will.”

The rest of the group traveled to the living room to give the two of you space to catch up. The sound of murmured conversation drifted from the living room, a soft reminder that—for the moment—things were okay. Hopper’s deep voice rumbled low, your mom chiming in every so often. The kids were all piled onto couches and cushions, catching up on everything that had been lost in the months apart.

But here, in the dimly lit bedroom, it was just you and Eddie.

You sat on the edge of the bed, your hand still gently wrapped around his, fingers tracing the calluses from his guitar playing and the faint tremble that came with pain and too many sleepless nights. His chest rose and fell slowly, the edge of the bandages visible beneath his worn t-shirt, his long curls spread out across the pillow like a halo. 

Your heart warmed looking at him, seeing him alive.

“I thought for a moment I lost you,” you whispered, eyes locked on his face.

Eddie blinked up at you, his gaze soft and unguarded. “Yeah… me too.”

There was a long pause. Not heavy, just full.

“I’m sorry,” he said after a moment. His voice was quiet, rough around the edges– not just from the injury, but from something deeper. “I tried calling. I’m sure Wayne has as well. Probably bombarded your dorm phone with calls.”

You shook your head. “You don’t have to be sorry. Not to me. I should be the one apologizing for not picking up. If I hadn’t been busy with exams I could’ve made it home sooner.”

“I didn’t think I was gonna make it out,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “I really thought... that was it. That I’d never see you again. Never tell you how much I—” His throat caught.

“I know, Ed.” You leaned in, resting your forehead gently against his. “I know.”

He closed his eyes, and for a moment, you just breathed together. The world outside faded to a distant hum. His hand curled tighter around yours.

“I didn’t feel the pain at first,” he murmured. “I just remember thinking, ‘You’re gonna be so mad at me.’”

You laughed softly, tears stinging your eyes. “I am mad at you. You idiot.”

A ghost of a grin pulled at his lips. “I figured.”

You kissed his forehead, letting your lips linger against his skin. “But mostly I’m just… glad you’re here.”

He reached up with shaky fingers, brushing the back of his hand along your cheek. “I keep thinking this is a dream. That I’ll wake up and I’m still in the Upside Down, bleeding out on that stupid mattress in that haunted trailer.”

“You’re not,” you whispered. “You’re home. You’re safe.”

He swallowed hard. “I’m not okay. Not really. Not yet.”

“I know,” you said. “You don’t have to be. I’ll be here. Every step.”

His eyes found yours, wide and vulnerable. “Promise?”

You brought his hand to your lips and kissed his knuckles. “Promise. You’ve always been there for me while I’ve recovered from my fair share, albeit unknowingly. Sorry by the way… for not telling you sooner about this. About what we’ve been through.”

“I always figured you’d let me know when you were ready. I’ve never been one to rush you.” Eddie’s eyes began to flutter closed, his body finally surrendering to exhaustion now that you were there.

You shifted, carefully lying down beside him, curling against his side with your arm draped gently across his chest. He breathed a little easier then. Like your presence grounded him.

“I missed you,” he mumbled, already halfway asleep.

“I missed you more,” you whispered.

His lashes rested against his bruised cheeks, his fingers still tangled with yours like he didn’t trust the world not to steal you away.

But sleep hadn’t fully claimed him yet. You could feel the tension still lingering just beneath the surface of his tired body.

After a moment of quiet, you spoke, your voice soft against the hush of the room.

“Did you call Wayne?”

Eddie didn’t respond right away. His thumb traced over your knuckles once… then again.

You leaned your forehead against his temple. “He’s probably worried sick. I know you wouldn’t want him to see you like this, but… he deserves to know you're okay. That you’re here. I know I would if I were in his shoes.”

A long breath pushed from Eddie’s chest.

“I tried,” he murmured. “Couple times. Picked up the phone and everything. But… I didn’t know what to say. ‘Hey, Uncle Wayne, it’s me—your nephew who the whole town thinks is dead, covered in bite marks and guilt, just checking in’?”

Your heart ached at the self-deprecating edge in his voice. You pulled him closer, fingers brushing through the curls at the nape of his neck. Being mindful of his injuries.

“Say, ‘I love you. I’m alive. I made it out.’” You paused, swallowing back the lump forming in your throat. “That’s all he wants to hear, Ed.”

He was quiet again. The kind of quiet that meant he heard you, even if he couldn’t answer right away.

Then, just above a whisper: “Will you call him with me? Tomorrow?”

You nodded, your voice catching just a little. “Yeah. Of course I will.”

Eddie’s hand tightened around yours again, like that promise alone let him loosen a little more, let the weight start to lift—even just a little.

You didn’t say anything else. Didn’t need to. Just laid there with him as the house outside buzzed with life, giving him the quiet peace he hadn’t had in months.

Sleep finally found him not long after.

And you stayed with him, just like you promised. Finally at peace with Eddie in your arms as sleep took over.

Morning came slow and warm, the golden light of the rising sun slipping through the thin curtains and casting soft patterns across the bedroom walls.

You stirred first, eyes blinking open to the sound of muffled voices and clattering dishes from the kitchen. Someone was arguing over how to cook eggs—Robin, by the sound of it—and there was laughter in between. The smell of something slightly burnt and definitely not edible wafted into the room.

Hopper and your mom must have gotten groceries earlier, since last you knew this cabin had been vacant.

You smiled sleepily, turning your head to find Eddie still asleep beside you. His features relaxed in a way you hadn’t seen in a long time. One of his arms had somehow ended up draped over your waist, like even in sleep he needed to know you were there.

But the moment you shifted, his eyes fluttered open. Groggy, but alert.

“Hey,” he rasped, voice still thick with sleep.

“Morning,” you whispered, brushing his curls off his forehead. “Sleep okay?”

He gave you a soft, lazy grin. “Best sleep I’ve had since… everything. I didn’t even dream. Just… you.”

Your heart clenched in the best kind of way. You leaned down to kiss his temple.

In the distance, someone dropped a pan with a loud crash. Steve’s voice called out, “Who put a metal spoon in the microwave?!”

Eddie blinked. “Are we… under attack?”

You snorted. “Nope. Just breakfast, Byers-Hopper style.”

He groaned, burying his face into your shoulder. “Tell me this is a dream. Tell me I’m not gonna have to eat something Robin tried to cook.”

“She’s trying,” you whispered, laughing.

“She shouldn’t.” His voice was muffled against your collarbone, but the warmth in it was unmistakable.

The bedroom door creaked open a second later, and Will peeked in. “You guys awake?”

You nodded, smiling. “Barely.”

Will grinned. “Come out when you’re ready. Robin says she’s made pancakes but they’re kind of… abstract.”

“Where’s mom and Hopper?” you changed the subject briefly.

“Oh, they’re out grabbing edible food for us since Robin and the others kind of… wasted everything they bought for breakfast. Mom said they’d be back in thirty.”

Eddie grumbled into your shoulder, you let out a deep laugh.

Will smiled at the two of you, “I’ll leave you two to get ready.”

As the door clicked shut behind him, Eddie looked up at you. “You think it’s too soon to sneak out the window?”

“I think you’re too bandaged to sneak anywhere,” you teased. “But nice try.”

He smiled, then went quiet for a second, fingers brushing your hand again. “Still want to call Wayne today?”

You nodded. “Yeah. After breakfast. When you’re ready.”

Eddie sighed, but it wasn’t heavy this time. “Okay. As long as you’re there, I can handle it.”

Together, you sat up slowly. 

Eddie winced, his hand immediately going to his side as the movement tugged at one of the deeper wounds beneath his shirt, underneath his bandages. You caught him gently by the arm, steadying him before he could push himself too far.

“Easy,” you murmured a warning, already slipping off the bed to grab the small kit of supplies left on the dresser from Hopper last night. “Let’s check these bandages. You’re not getting an infection on my watch, not if I can help it.”

Eddie raised an eyebrow, smiling faintly. “Didn’t realize I married a nurse.”

You shot him a mock glare as you returned with the kit. “You didn’t. But you did marry someone who knows how to babysit injury-prone teenage boys and clean up after D&D nights that somehow always end in bloodshed.”

“Fair,” he muttered, easing his shirt up with your help. “I think I preferred the bloodshed that came from too much Mountain Dew and a dice tower collapse.”

You gave him a wry smile but said nothing as you peeled back the gauze from the worst of the wounds on his side. You did your best to keep your expression neutral, but your heart squeezed at the angry red lines of stitches, still raw and healing. The bite marks left behind by those “demobats” were deeper than you expected.

Eddie watched your face carefully. “It looks worse than it feels,” he offered quietly.

“You always say that,” you replied, voice low. “Even when you’re full of stitches and trying to walk it off.”

He gave a small chuckle, but the sound hitched when he finally stood up.

“Eds… I think we’re going to have to wash these before we clean with the solution here. It’d be best considering the surrounding areas not cut up are still grimy.”

His face paled at the idea.

“Wash?” he echoed, blinking like you’d just asked him to walk barefoot right into an active volcano.

You gave him a sympathetic smile, placing a hand gently on his uninjured shoulder. “I’ll be careful, promise. But you’ve got dried blood and dirt caked onto you.”

Eddie groaned quietly, swaying slightly on his feet before you steadied him again. “This is payback for the time I made you sit through that three-hour Megadeth deep-dive documentary, isn’t it?”

You laughed, reaching for a clean towel, bowl and the warm water Hopper had left in the thermos on the dresser. “No. That was its own punishment.”

He snorted, then winced as you dabbed a wet washcloth across his skin, loosening up the grime bit by bit with the warm water. The room was quiet, save for the sound of water dripping back into the bowl and the occasional hiss of discomfort from Eddie.

“You now,” he muttered, eyes fluttering shut, “this is weirdly comforting.”

You glanced up at him. “What is?”

“This,” he gestured at himself. “You. Taking care of me. Even when I look like Frankenstein’s roadkill.”

You smirked. “You’ve always looked a little like Frankenstein’s roadkill. It’s part of your charm.”

Eddie chuckled, a warm sound despite the tension in his shoulders. “You know, if anyone else said that, I’d be offended.”

“But since it’s me—?”

“It’s endearing,” he finished, cracking one eye open and giving you a crooked grin.

You smiled softly, brushing damp curls away from his forehead. “There. All cleaned up. Now for the hard part… the cleaning solution.”

He inhaled sharply as you grabbed fresh clean gauze and poured the solution on them before gently dabbing his wounds. His whimpers made your heart ache.

You grabbed the ointment once you were done, gingerly applying it to the cleaned wounds. “Let’s rewrap these and then you can sit down and pretend pancakes weren’t nearly a war crime this morning.”

He let out a shaky breath, grateful and tired all at once. “I don’t deserve you.”

You pressed a kiss to his temple. “Too late. You’ve got me. Forever.”

Eddie closed his eyes again, not in pain this time—but peace.

By the time you finished redressing his wounds and helping him into a clean shirt, the clatter of paper bags and the familiar scent of bacon and toast filtered in from the kitchen.

“That better be diner-grade coffee,” Eddie muttered, wincing slightly as he took a step toward the door with your help.

“It is,” you said. “And we survived another morning.”

“Barely,” he joked, slinging his arm gently around your shoulders.

Together, you stepped out of the room, ready to face the chaos, the healing, and the long-overdue phone call waiting just ahead.

“So, what originally brought you to our humble abode?” You placed the grocery bag on the counter in front of you. The three of you were still standing in the kitchen, a little closer now the initial shock washed over.

“You can thank this one over here. Left his comms on when once he came back, fortunately for him no one was listening, well besides from me. I caught everything up until you went deep into your history before the connection finally ended.” Guy sent a look to Kyle, shaking his head slowly. “Now, I figured I should probably meet this mystery person I’ve heard so very little about for myself. I was lucky you two live together, otherwise that would’ve made my trip a little harder.”

You let out a long sigh, mentally reminding yourself to have a talk with your apparent careless husband. “Okay, I can get behind that.”

Kyle sent a nervous look towards you, shuffling closer hesitantly. “Darling, honey pie, light of my life, you’re taking this all very calmly. Does that, perhaps, mean you’re not angry?”

“Oh, I’m furious with you,” You tried to keep your voice steady as you moved away from his reach. His face dropped slightly at the motion. “But I’ve also kept things from you that I should have told you sooner, so I guess this puts us on some slight even footing. And just so you know, this does not mean you’re in the clear. This is my life you had been reckless with, the life I tried so hard to keep safe. If this was anyone else, we both would be in more danger than you know.”

Tears were pricking your eyes and the nausea was setting in, your stomach fluttered as the rush of emotions became overwhelming. “Now if you excuse me, I’m going to go throw up and when I come back I expect the both of you to be ready to leave for lunch. This is non negotiable.”

You turned on your heel and dashed to the guest bathroom, slamming the door shut as you barely made it to the toilet before the contents of your stomach spilled out. You whimpered as the heaving became too much all too quickly. Resting your forehead against the cool seat felt heavenly for your heated skin, waiting for the next wave to come. Fortunately it never came. The room no longer felt like it was spinning so that was a win.

After a few beats nothing else came up, the queasiness had eased up some.

The knock on the door startled you. You called out weakly for them to come in, you were taking your chances on it being Kyle since Guy had looked like he wanted the Earth to swallow him up whole when you left.

The door opened and you were met with the familiar green eyes you’ve come to long for and love. His face was stoic but quickly softened at your crumpled figure.

“How are you feeling?” Kyle spoke softly, kneeling down, gently rubbing your back.

“Like shit,” you said flatly, leaning into him with a grumble. “I think this week takes the cake of being terrible. It feels infinitely worse than the weeks before. I don’t understand how someone can be this sick during every waking moment of the day?”

“Do you want to stay home for lunch then? I could send Guy out.” He suggested.

You hummed, doing a mental check of your physical state. “No, I think it would be better to go out. I’m going to feel sick regardless so might as well make the most of it.”

“Okay,” He blinked, eyes filled with emotion. You could tell he wanted to say something so you sat patiently for him until he was ready. With a sigh he continued, “I’m sorry I wasn’t careful. I was just so focused on getting to you before anything terrible happened, the last time you had gotten sick I almost lost my mind when you had to be hospitalized. Honestly, I couldn’t handle another repeat.”

You turned in his arms, pulling him close in a hug, his arms wrapped tightly around you as if afraid you would crumble if he let go. “My love, listen to me. It's okay. I turned out okay in the end. More than okay, really. And before you say anything, you already know I would do everything in my power to not let that happen again, especially to you. I made a promise that day at our wedding I would never leave you, that no matter what we’ll always have each other.”

“But I could have put your life at risk. I should have known better. If something were to happen to you- gods, and the baby! If something happened to the both of you I could not forgive myself. I’m sorry I did that to you both.” Kyle croaked out. Your heart nearly broke at the sound.

You knew where this was stemming from, had been there to pick up the pieces that were threatening to shatter completely, caring for a nearly broken man trying so desperately to stay afloat. How one man could deal with all that trauma and still manage to smile and care for you every single day, you didn’t know. You were glad you were there in time before it became too much for him. Had been alongside him to mourn the loved ones he had lost.

“Look at me,” You pulled back to cradle his face in your hands, thumbs brushing over his cheeks, his hands found your hips. “I’m not gonna lie, I was more than scared when I found out the comms had been left on. But it appears that luck was on our side since it was your best friend who was on the other side, a person who I trust by the way.” You said with certainty. “That being said, I know with my whole being and soul that you would never mean harm to either of us. I trust you completely. So don’t get lost in that wonderful, beautiful head of yours.”

“Thank you.” Kyle smiled. You could see thoughts were still swirling in his head, you know this conversation would be continued once you had no more guests.

During that time you pulled him in to give a peck on his nose, which he wrinkled in a grimace. “And as much as I love you, I’m asking you politely to rinse your mouth. Your breath is gnarly.”

You let go with a laugh, smacking his arm. “You ass!”

“Get washed up, lovey.” He placed a kiss on the crown of your head and got up, helping you in the process as well. “We’ll continue this later, let’s get back to our guest who’s awkwardly waiting for us.”

“Oh yeah, I don’t think I made such a good impression. Go ask what he’s feeling on eating, I won’t be more than a few minutes.”

He left with a small pat on your butt. Remembering what a coworker once said about not brushing your teeth after throwing up because it grinds the acid into your teeth, you rinsed thoroughly with water followed by mouthwash. Doing another rinse of both you figured you could do a quick brush now.

It probably wasn’t the best idea but at least the mint flavor replaced the offensive one that had been left in your mouth. It also helped ease the sick feeling that clung desperately to you.

The boys had picked a place nearby the apartment to walk to, they had been chatting your ear the entire way there. Of course, you wished you had offered to drive since the weather had gotten worse, the snow now in huge piles on the sidewalk making you put in more effort than needed to trudge through it.

Thinking about it now, there are only three more weeks until Christmas comes. You had forgotten all about it, too caught up with work to begin shopping. You’ll have to find a day when Kyle was out to go get gifts.

Not wanting to chance it again when you had been called in three days before the holiday last year, the two of you hadn't made any plans ahead of time, not sure if there'd be any last minute assignments given.

The diner had been tucked away towards the end of the block, it was small and gave off a warm, cozy vibe. You picked a booth in a corner, away from the windows with you near the wall and Kyle at the end, Guy sat across from the two of you.

You were trying to decide on getting either soup or sandwich for the better half of ten minutes, your efforts on choosing one was futile because you ended up ordering both

It was Guy who pulled you out of your thoughts. “I’m curious to know how he managed to score a date with you.”

With a mischievous glint in your eyes, Kyle knew what you were going to say first.

“He managed to spill his coffee all down my shirt.” You said with a shake of your head, forcing off a smile to feign the look of disappointment.

“There’s no way he did that, holy shit! And you still gave him the time of day?”

“Well, I was the one who actually asked him out. He was too shocked by what had happened, it was really cute. I like to think he fell for my charm, pun intended.” You laughed.

Kyle let out a groan, hiding his face in his hands clearly embarrassed. Guy groaned at your awful pun, if you could even call it that. But you were very pleased with their reactions.

The full brunt of nausea had returned when the food arrived but you managed to push it down and force food into you so you at least had something in your system. Kyle glanced your way, noticing the change in your demeanor and took your hand in his, rubbing comforting circles onto the back of yours.

“We went out for a date the week after the first, which turned into having dates once a week, which turned into two dates a week after a month, and then three dates a week. Eventually he wouldn’t dare part with me.” You said between bites.

“We've been together for five years now, going on six real soon.” Kyle continued. You hummed, leaning into his shoulder.

 “The first three years we dated, it was interesting to see how it lasted since I was going on and off world for most of the beginning. Coming clean to her helped tremendously,” Kyle noted happily. “And these last two years have been amazing since we married.” The pure joy was evident in his voice.

“What’d you think when he kept leaving in the beginning?” Guy asked you, clearly interested in your thoughts.

“It wasn't as noticeable to me because I travel a lot for work. We were lucky I had that week off, otherwise I don't think none of this would have happened. But his cute charms and loving personality made it worth it.”

“Gross.” Guy faked gagging. “What do you do for work that keeps you traveling?” 

You had been expecting that question to come up. But you wished it had come up later. Looking at Kyle who shrugged, suggesting it was your decision to tell him the truth. You decided on something in the middle.

“I work for a security company, traveling wherever I'm needed to provide my services.” It wasn't the whole truth but it also wasn't completely a lie.

Guy seemed pretty surprised at your job, not expecting that from the cozy nature of your look. “That's pretty neat. Do you stay in the country or do you also travel internationally?”

“Most of the time it's international but the most recent trip was actually here on the east coast. I was happy with the lack of jet lag that accompanies my trips.”

The three of you let the conversation die down to eat your food. The faint music playing from the speakers added to the comfortable atmosphere. It felt like you were catching up with lifelong friends rather than meeting up with your husband's brother for the first time.

“Not to bring up the elephant in the room but does Bats know about you two being together?” Guy asked wearily, looking back and forth at the two of you.

You tensed at the question, shifting uncomfortably in your seat, suddenly more interested in shoving your food around, no longer with an appetite.

“Actually, no.” Kyle coughed. “As far as I’m aware, they don’t know about us.”

“They don’t.” You confirmed coldly.

The air became thick at your tone, sensing this was a topic you did not want to talk about, Guy quickly changed the subject.

“Uhm… Have you guys got anything for the tiny lantern?”

Like a switch had gone off in your brain, your body relaxed against the seat, a soft smile on your face upon hearing the name.

“Tiny Lantern?” You asked.

“Y-yeah. The kid is gonna be a lantern if I have any say. Ring or not, we’re family.”

“Oh, fuck I think I’m going to cry thats so sweet!” The overwhelming emotions began pouring out, tears streaming down your face.

“Wait, no! Don’t cry!” He panicked and looked at Kyle for help, who was equally as flustered and confused as he was.

A small sob came out, you gulped down your water trying to stop the tears from continuing. You really didn’t know why it affected you like this, you were normally amazing at keeping your emotions in check. That’s a lie, you knew exactly why.

“It’s not that, it’s the hormones.” Wiping your tear stained face you sucked in a deep breath hoping to calm down. “Don’t worry about it, I'm fine. They’re happy tears, you didn’t do anything wrong.”

Kyle gave your hand a squeeze, comforting you and turned towards his friend with a smile. That seemed to relieve him. “To answer the question, no, we haven't gotten around to any shopping yet. Well, apart from the prenatals and vitamins she needs to take now. I think that had been our next stop once we dropped off the supplies at the apartment.”

Your breathing had evened out, no longer crying. It was a little embarrassing but you couldn’t find it in yourself to care, your energy now low. That seemed to be another lovely symptom you’ve acquired in the past month, remembering how you felt after your last mission.

“Maybe after a nap?” You suggested with a yawn. “Or perhaps you two could go while I nap?” You were exhausted, possibly due to the whiplash of emotions during the entire time here.

“Of course, let me pay and get some containers for us. I’ll be right back.” Kyle scooted out of the seat and walked to the counter.

The both of you kept quiet, not really sure on what to say.

You broke the silence, “I want to say that I’m normally not like this. I’m usually much calmer, not really a crier.” Not sure why you felt the need to explain yourself but continued. “Sorry I scared you earlier, it’s been a pretty harsh week for me.”

His face faltered for a moment, “Somehow, I don’t doubt that. I apologize for bringing up an unwanted past. I don’t know how long it’s been since you last saw your family but they’re different now, if it makes any difference.”

You sent him a knowing look. Of course you know how your family is doing, you’ve kept daily tabs on them since you left the manor that day.

It was one of the conditions of your new life and job that your boss let you have complete access to anything regarding them. Both in and out of the mask, although you're the only one with access to that knowledge.

“The things Kyle told me about you when you were in the bathroom makes you out to be a strong and loving woman. I don’t doubt that one bit. You’re good for him, he’s much happier than before and I know it’s thanks to you.” Guy sat back in his seat, sent a warm look to Kyle and turned back to you.

Your heart warmed and you felt lighter. Like a tension had been released from your shoulders. Looking into his eyes you only saw comfort and admiration shining through.

“Thank you, I know you mean so much to him too. I’ve heard and seen the way you treat each other like family, it’s of great importance to me having you out there with him keeping each other safe. Just know you’re always welcome to stop by, whether that be for him or to crash. The door is always open for you.”

There was a faint blush that crept up his neck. “Thank you, that means a lot coming from you.”

“Any time, although I do have one request… actually two requests for you.” He motioned for you to go on. “First, if you could keep us, me and the baby, a secret from the others, just until we’re ready.”

“That’s understandable, don't even have to ask.” He smiled.

“You might want some background information for the second favor. I have this friend of mine, a kid that I look after whenever he’s in town, actually his entire family are friends of mine.” You rambled on, taking a moment to breathe. “Anyways, he crashes with us from time to time, but is a little weary of strangers. So, whenever you’re here around the same time as him, if you could possibly ease up and maybe… give him space. Just so he doesn’t freak out.”

“That’s certainly something.” He chuckled. “But I’ll be on my best behavior, since you asked so nicely.”

Wishing you could believe it you knew better than to hope for a miracle. You knew with the two of them together they'd end up destroying the whole apartment complex. Billy had confided in you that you Rayners and his family are the only people who know about his identity, but that doesn't mean he'd stop being his chaotic smack-talking self around Guy. The less they interact with each other the safer your home will be.

Kyle came back with a few containers and you all quickly filled them before heading out, you hailing a taxi to avoid the cold before the two could oppose.

You woke up much later in the day, the sky was dark but that was expected in the winter. The smell of food welcomed you, no longer feeling sick for the time being although you knew it would be a matter of time before it returned.

Making your way out of the bedroom there were bags littered along the hallway, leading to the living room where you found Kyle and Guy sitting on the floor reading instructions with parts on the floor in front of them

“Aren’t you two a sight for sore eyes.” Their heads shot up in your direction, surprised at your arrival.

“Hey sleeps, you’re up! There’s a dinner plate on the counter for you,” Kyle nodded towards the kitchen counter where there was a steaming plate of food.

You crossed the room grabbing the plate and walked back sitting on the couch closest to Kyle, judging by all the pans on the stove top he made dinner for all of you. He gave your calf a quick squeeze for his own comfort, fingers lingering.

“What are you two building?” You asked in between bites.

It could have literally been anything. The random parts on the floor didn’t give you any clues at all, whatever container they had been in was gone as well. Kyle and Guy shared a look, having a silent conversation while you ate, looking between the two of them perfectly content on waiting them out.

Guy spoke first, “It was supposed to be a surprise for when you woke up, a gift for the tiny lantern.”

“It’s a crib for our little bean,” Kyle continued eagerly with a grin. “It’s the same one you were looking at online, you’d mentioned wanting it and I thought we might as well get it now.”

Looking over at the parts in front of you it slowly clicked together. It should have been obvious from the start but your sleepy baby brain hadn’t booted up when you had looked at the familiar soft gray pieces all laid out for them.

“You do know we still have like another seven months until our bean joins us, right?” You asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Yeah, but I was a little eager and Guy suggested it was a good idea to get started with the big stuff early on rather than wait until you’re farther along.”

Guy held up his hands, “Woah! I didn’t do anything, you’re just easily suggestible.”

“No, you’re the one who put the idea in my head.” Kyle bickered back.

You chuckled into your food. Kyle smiled up at you before turning his attention back to Guy who was smirking at him. It was obvious to Guy that you and Kyle were completely in love with each other, he was glad his best friend was happy.

“Well, thank you both for the amazing gift. The only thing we need to do besides building this is to figure out where we’re going to put it.” You said.

“Are you not turning the guest room into the nursery?” Guy asked you both.

You shrugged, “We only found out three days ago we’re expecting so we hadn’t really thought that far ahead. I mean it would be smart to do that but what about when we have guests staying over?”

“Maybe we could let our little bean stay in our room with us so they’re within reach, and we keep the guest room as is, at least for now.” Kyle suggested.

“I think you might need to invest in a larger home, this apartment is gonna get cramped real soon. You have some time to decide but don’t put it off at the last minute.” Guy piped in.

“It honestly wouldn’t be a terrible idea to get a bigger place,” you agreed. “We do have a stable and good enough income to go looking. Alright then. I’ll leave you two to build, I have maternity shopping to do.” You got up and loaded your plate into the dishwasher.  “Babe, do you know where my laptop is? I think I misplaced it again, I couldn’t find it when we got back from lunch.”

He mumbled instructions to Guy then turned to answer you. “Yeah, the rascal asked if he could use it for the weekend to do a school report so I dropped it off. You can use mine, it should still be charging on my bedside table.”

Of course your unofficial son was borrowing your laptop, this shouldn’t be news to you. You did your best not to trip on all the bags that were still placed around the hallway floor, making a mental note to inspect their contents later. 

For the time being you made yourself comfy on the bed with the laptop in your lap, you had some shopping to do since it was getting more difficult to squeeze into some of your clothes. Everything was slightly snugger than they normally were but in due time nothing would fit.

Time must have flown by quickly because a very exhausted looking Kyle walked in, shutting the door quietly behind him. You weren’t sure if it was the pregnancy spurring on your feelings but he looked downright beautiful. His hair was a tousled mess, half-lidded eyes struggled to stay open, and his pout was too cute. “Were you able to find anything good and comfortable? Should I be worried about fighting off wandering eyes when you look gorgeous in whatever outfits you got yourself?”

“Only found a few things but since I have no clue what I’m doing I bought them in different sizes and I’ll return whatever doesn’t work. As for fighting off others, I’ll handle that myself but you can do as you please,” you closed the laptop as Kyle got on his side of the bed, setting it aside and gave him your undivided attention. “So… are we good to talk about it? Our situation.”

“If you’re asking if the walls have ears, no– we’re good. Guy barely made it to the spare room before he passed out. Damn crib took all our energy. It was impossible to put together.”

You let out a laugh scooting closer to Kyle, he pulled you both down so you were laying down with your back to his front where he could easily wrap his arms around you. He let his fingers rub away any lingering discomfort that came with the stressful day.

“I want to start off by apologizing for not telling you about my past sooner. I mean, we’ve been married for years now and the only thing I told you was that I had left my old life behind and took up hiding behind this new person I created. It wasn’t right nor was it fair of me to do that while you gave me everything and more.” You sighed, placing your own hands on top of his.

“Believe me when I say I knew what I was getting into when I decided to marry you. Your job alone requires you to erase your existence both in the virtual and physical world, it’s a miracle we ran into each other when we did otherwise I wouldn’t have the love of my life in my arms right now,” Kyle gave you a gentle squeeze. “You can say I don’t know anything about your past but don’t you dare say I don’t know anything about you. I know your favorite color and how you try to keep something on you that closely matches it.

“I know your eyes light up whenever you get to a good part in a book. I know how after a bad day of work you love it when I get a bath ready and have dinner prepared so all you have to do is wind down and relax. And I know that when I get too overwhelmed and start panicking you’re always there to bring me back to reality and calm me down– how you’ll drop everything to come to me to do it. These are all the little things that piece you together, the only things that matter. I don’t care that you hid that part of you but I would love nothing more than to learn about it when you’re ready and when you’re willing.”

It was incredibly hard to keep the tears back but your sniffling gave you away. There was no one more understanding and kind than your husband and it broke your heart you never had the guts to completely spill all your secrets to him. He had all your trust, love, and support and you hoped he felt the same.

“Have I told you how much I love you?” You turned your head and kissed him.

“I don’t believe you have, maybe I could do with some reminders.” Kyle gave you another peck when you pulled away.

You both stayed silent for a moment, soaking in each other’s presence and warmth. You might have thought Kyle fell asleep if it wasn’t for the long yawn coming from him.

“Babe?” you whispered and waited for a response before continuing. “Guy is right. We’re going to need to find a bigger place, it might be time to start looking into some houses. Get a nice place to stretch our legs, lord knows we’re going to need the extra room once our little bean is here and the Marvel gang makes it their life mission to help out.”

“Okay, we can start looking tomorrow– after we get some rest.”

You eased out of his arms to turn off the lamp and he immediately pulled you back to him when you were done. “Alright, tomorrow then. Good night, I love you.”

“I love you too, sleep well.”

Now, with the heavy weight off your chest you were able to fall asleep without a problem for the first time in a long time.

Being apart from Mickey when either one of you were away was one of the hardest parts of your relationship. The one thing that made the trips away bearable were the frequent phone calls.

Through the phone screen Mickey had propped up so you could see the items he was holding up were two shirts to choose for his attire to a team party he was currently running late to. A situation he wouldn’t be in if he had listened to you days ago. Instead, he had put it off at the last minute wanting to have your input when you were next available.

“You know… I think the blue shirt would look better. The brown one clashes too much with the pants, you’ll look like a bigger dork than you already do now.”

His furrowed brows gave off the only indicator he was put off by your comment. You so badly wanted to reach through the phone screen and smooth it out with your thumb. Instead, you opted with a smile and a little laugh.

“Yeah okay, blue it is. It’ll match Reuben’s outfit, we’ll be the best matching couple there. Who knows, maybe we’ll get a prize.” He shrugged off his sweater and put the shirt on, doing a few turns for you.

“Remind me again why you’re not married to him?” Your eyes were focused on his form, missing the feeling of having him in your arms. Just three more days until you arrive home.

Mickey shot you a flat look, “I believe it’s because we’re madly in love.”

“Yes, I know you two are. Which is why I don’t understand how I got stuck with you.”

“It’s times like these where I wonder the same thing,” he sighed then grabbed the phone and brought it closer to him. “Do you know how much longer you’ll be? I’m actually starting to miss my snarky wife.”

There was a commotion down the hall that caught your attention and someone had called out your name.

“Not for too much longer, my love. I have to go now, tell Reuben I miss him and give his wife my love. I love you Mr. Garcia.”

“I love you more Mrs. Garcia, I’ll see you soon.” He blew you a kiss that you caught and pressed to your heart before hanging up.

You had landed not long ago, asking a friend to drop you off home so you could surprise your husband. Once you arrived in the driveway of your shared home with your things set on the ground, you pulled out your phone and called Mickey.

The rush of excitement filled you, making it nearly impossible to keep the screen focused on you so none of your surroundings showed. You just wanted to see him again and here you were with a door being the only thing that separated you two.

He picked up on the fourth ring with a huge smile, “Hello my love! I wasn’t expecting you to call so soon, are you alright?”

You couldn’t contain the giggle that escaped you. He looked like he just woken up from a nap. The pillow marks visible on his face and his hair was tousled in a curly mess. “Good morning, love! I'm faring well, still tired but you know how that is. Anyways, I forgot I had ordered a gift for your mom and since I'm in service I got notified it was delivered. Can you do me a big favor and grab it for me?”

He shook his head at your antics, of course you'd wait until the last minute to inform him on important news. “Yeah, sure of course. Do you wanna be on call when I grab it or can we chat some more before I go?”

“No, I want to be on call. I have to make sure the right gift was delivered. Last time I ordered something when you were aware they sent me an entirely different package.” You thought of a lie before he could think of another reason to not do it.

“Alright, alright. Just bare with me for a moment while I make my way down.” From your view you could see him walking through your house towards the front door. The excitement was making you giddy and you tried to keep on your best neutral expression. “Okay, here we are. You ready to see whatever it is you got?”

“Ready as I'll ever be.” You wiggled your eyebrows, Mickey chuckled and you could hear it through the front door. He was so close to your reach now. If only he could just hurry up so the sun would stop burning you.

As soon as he opened the door you yelled, “Surprise, love!” You quickly hung up the call and ran to him, jumping into his arms as he spun you around. Neither of you could contain the excited giggles.

Mickey set you down only to pepper your face in kisses. Neither of you cared if any of your nosy neighbors witnessed the happy moment, you both were happy to be back in each other’s arms. Mickey gave you one last kiss and stared in your eyes, “I was going crazy without you. You don’t know how happy I am that you’re finally home.”

“I think I can take a guess,” you pulled away from him and leaned down to grab your things, handing him the larger bag. “Now, let’s head inside so you can fix me something to eat, I’m hungry.”

Blanket Fort 🎄-Day One

The sound of the small space heater filled the air as you sat curled up on the couch with a book, bundled in blankets to fight off the cold air.

The furnace had broken days earlier, a call to the H-VAC company told you they wouldn’t be able to get anyone out until the end of the weekend, they were having some maintenance problems that had them closed for the week. So you had Kyle purchase some electric space heaters that rotated around the home to keep most areas warm.

The two of you found the living room stayed the warmest and had nestled up there every night. It was a good thing Kyle had talked you into purchasing the more expensive couch because it was definitely worth the money spent.

The front door opened with a chilling breeze, grabbing your attention as you watched Kyle shut it quickly behind him, face rosy and hair disheveled from the cold wind. You felt your cheeks heat up as he spotted you from the doorway, instantly giving you a loving smile, one that you returned after a moment to take in his appearance.

“Was your day alright?” You asked, setting down your book which was long forgotten.

“Yeah, it would have been better if I had brought more layers. The studio was colder than outside, I don’t even know how that was possible.” He shrugged off his coat that was almost soaked through from the slushy snow. The idea of having to traverse outside made you inwardly cringe, you knew he had to be freezing and uncomfortable.

“Why don’t you take a warm shower and I’ll put on a movie for us when you get out.” You suggested.

He kicked off his shoes by the entrance and walked to you, leaning over the couch to give you a kiss. “That sounds like a great idea, I won’t be too long then.”

You hummed happily as he walked towards the bedroom. Hearing the bathroom door close and the water turn on, you came up with an idea that would help him relax. That idea required lots and lots of blankets and pillows, you knew your large blanket collection would come in handy one day.

You walked to where you had stashed your blanket hoard and grabbed everything you needed, setting them on the couch. You stood with your hands on your hips, glancing around to figure out where it would be best to start.

It would make sense if the large couch was the main structure but you wondered if it would be better to use the floor and have the couch serve as extra back support instead. After a few more moments of contemplating you decided on abandoning your thoughts and began on setting up the fort.

If you couldn’t choose between the two, why not just do both? That way you’d have more space to use when you would start feeling too cramped in one area.

You didn’t hear Kyle come back to the living room when you were halfway done, freshly showered and bundled up in warm pajamas.

“Woah! This is incredible!” Kyle expressed in wonder, his hands found their way around your waist pulling you in a hug. You turned in his arms so you were facing him, tightening your own hold.

“You weren’t supposed to be out yet, it’s not done.” You said with a pout. He laughed before giving a peck on your nose.

“You’ve already done an impressive job, it looks amazing. But now that I’m here I can help.” Kyle replied.

The floor was covered with thick blankets, each strategically placed to provide more cushion. The pillows were arranged as a makeshift border surrounding the area; larger and thinner blankets had been used as the fort’s canopy.

“The only thing left to do is to bring more space heaters and get the thicker blankets and we’re all set.” You said with a nod. “Would you mind doing that while I change into my pajamas? I don’t want to be left out of the comfy train, not while you’re leading it.”

You felt more than heard the deep hearty chuckle Kyle let out. “Yeah, of course. Go change party pooper.”

By the time you changed and came back Kyle had turned off all the lights, save for the ones on the Christmas tree, and had chosen a movie to put on.

It was honestly a breathtaking sight to see. Kyle had been laid out on the couch, one arm positioned behind his head in support while the other lay over his midsection. The dim glow of the lights on the tree had painted Kyle in a radiant light that you swore rivaled that of one of the wonders of the world, it made your heart beat faster seeing him like this.

“Don’t you look comfortable.” You cleared your throat.

“I will be once you’re curled up next to me.” He moved farther back into the couch to give you room in front of him. You rolled your eyes in mock annoyance, smiling to yourself.

You crouched down to walk into the blanket fort, settling into the spot next to him. Kyle pulled one of the many blankets over the both of you, wrapping his free arm around you, pressing play on the movie.

The tv light brightened up the blanket fort around you, creating a soft atmosphere that made you drowsy. It felt like the world had been cut off and the only thing that existed was this little bubble you created.

“Thank you for this, I really needed it.” Kyle whispered. You would have missed it if he wasn’t right next to you.

“For you, anything.” You replied sleepily, it was getting harder to keep your eyes open. If it were even possible he pulled you closer against his chest, lazily tracing shapes on your arm. “Plus it beats sleeping in the cold, it’s doing a good job at keeping us warm.”

He let out a yawn, slumber calling to him as well. “I really hope we get the furnace fixed soon, otherwise I might just have to take things into my own hands.”

That would not end well. Kyle is not the best guy for maintenance, last time he tried to fix something it had been the stove, and the place nearly went up in flames.

“Kyle, I love you but there is no way I’m letting you touch that thing.” You said through your own yawn. You did not have to look at him to know he rolled his eyes, you could practically feel him doing it.

“Go to sleep you big meany,” He huffed out. “And I love you too.”

The two of you stayed like that, making comments on the movie that was nearly forgotten, wrapped up in each other's presence that was amplified in the small fort. Whispering until eventually sleep took hold.

Wedding Day

To say you were nervous would be a complete understatement. The nerves kept you up much later than you would have liked, keeping you groggy for the better half of the morning.

You were just glad you had Mickey’s mom to help you get prepared. Once you were finished you looked at her through the mirror as she hugged you from behind, smiling with tears in her eyes. “You look breathtaking. Just as kind and beautiful as the shy little girl Mickey had been excited to bring home for the first time.”

Your dress was gorgeous, beyond anything you’ve ever dreamed of with the beautiful necklace she had gifted you in the morning.. It was a family heirloom that’s been passed down for generations, usually to the first married woman of the family. With Mickey being the oldest of two siblings and his younger sister not planning on getting engaged any time soon, it went to you, no matter how much you declined.

A few tears slipped as you hugged her tighter to you. “Thank you so much for everything. I don’t think I’d be where I am now without you or the family, you mean the world to me.”

The remaining hour went by in a flash. The venue was decorated with an assortment of fairy lights, giving it an ethereal glow. You both had invited a handful of people, a few family members and your closest friends, wanting to have a small wedding. Mickey was beaming with joy while trying to contain his crying as you both said your vows, you were no better. His best man and best friend Reuben had subtly handed you both tissues causing your heart to soar as you thought about your now husband having wonderful people in his life that cared deeply for him.

Your first kiss shared as husband and wife had completely swept you off your feet, your friends and family cheered loudly with a few hoots and hollers coming from the back. You were so enraptured by the kiss you didn’t realize Mickey had swept you up and carried you towards the reception area. The group had followed heading to their seats as all the food was being served.

“How are you feeling, Mrs. Garcia?” Mickey beamed at you.

“Absolutely in love, Mr. Garcia.” Winking at him, you leaned over and gave him a peck. It was so easy to get lost in each other. After all, you two had practice since you were five. You had a whole life together and were ready for more, greedily taking what you could get.

“You two are so sickly cute it’s disgustingly endearing. Remind me to nausea meds when I’m around the both of you,” Reuben teased you both. He was sitting at the table next to Mickey, shoving food in his mouth with a grin.

“Oh, I second that. It was bad enough I was forced to see her read the novels he sent her but now I have to see them interact in person.” Casey, your best friend who was your maid of honor chuckled. She sipped on her drink next to you with her date on the other side hiding a laugh with her hand.

“Hey, I wasn’t that bad. And those letters were sweet.” You grumbled under your breath causing the whole table to laugh. In all honesty, you were down bad.

She raised an eyebrow at you, “Need I remind you of the events leading to your callsign, Wraith?” She had got you there, not even your loving husband knew about that.

“Nope!” You squeaked, cheeks turning a dark crimson color. Reuben gave a questioning look to Mickey who shrugged back. He knew of your callsign, just not the story of how it came to you.

“Now you have to tell us. You can’t expect us not to bite the bait you’ve just thrown at us.”

Casey opened her mouth to speak but stopped at the look you gave her, instead she shrugged. “Sorry. Lips are sealed.”

“How wonderful,” you replied dryly, shaking your head at her. The others protested, wanting to hear the story that managed to ruffle your feathers. “I promise it’s nothing too interesting. She’s just making it out to seem like more than it really is.”

“I beg to differ,” Casey said behind her glass, smirking at you from the memory but relented in the end. It wasn’t everyday she got to tease you endlessly which had been payback for all the times you’ve done it to her. But she knew her limits and didn’t plan on crossing that line lest it fall back on her.

Reuben perked up at the exchange, “You’re not getting out of it that easily, I will expect an explanation some time in the future. As for now, go have your first dance you two lovebirds.” He and Casey had all but pushed you and Mickey out of your seats towards the makeshift dance floor. 

Giggling at their antics you grabbed Mickey’s hand in yours pulling yourself into his embrace as the music played after the announcement of your first dance. 

Finally having a moment to yourselves without any interruptions before the rest of the party joins you.

You looked up at him, completely love-struck, eyes shining with emotion. “I love you, Mr. Garcia.”

“I love you more, Mrs. Garcia.” He smiles, leaning down and pulls you into a kiss.

SFW Alphabet -Joaquin Torres

Summary: Here's some fluffy abc's of our lovely Joaquin Word Count:2.5k A/N: I thought this would be nice to have for our lovely boy, hope you enjoyed! Masterlist

A= Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

He would be very affectionate, as his love languages would definitely be physical touch, quality time. Your presence calms him and he adores being around you. In private, when it’s just the two of you, he’d be attached at the hip, there’s always at least one part of him in contact with you. The man will literally drape himself on you and ask you to run your hands through his hair, it’s one of his favorite pastimes. In public, he’d be more reserved but WILL always hold hands with you. He does it subconsciously too, once the both of you are out the door his hand immediately shifts into yours, it doesn’t matter if his hands are full, he will find a way to make it work.

B= Best Friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)

Joaquin would have probably bumped into you by accident in a coffee shop, nearly spilling both drinks in the process. From that moment on he would’ve been stuck with you, incredibly easy to befriend. He’s fiercely loyal, and trusts with his whole heart, but if you happen to break that trust or hurt him in any way, shape, or form it takes a LONG time to repair that bond. Otherwise, he’s the personification of sunshine. He would be a jokester, every morning you would wake up to a message that always had a joke or pun squeezed in.

C= Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

He’s incredibly cuddly, has to be wrapped up with you every chance he can get. As previously said he’s incredibly physically affectionate, so good luck trying to get anything done when he has time off. Bedtime snuggles are his favorite way to fall asleep, and will nuzzle his face into you exactly like a cat. He loves hearing the steady rhythm of your beating heart against his ear when he wakes up in the mornings, it soothes his soul. He also adores it when you card your fingers through his silky soft curls as he laid with his head in your lap.

D= Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

He does actively want to settle down but he’s been hesitant due to all the traveling he does, he doesn’t want to stress you out with the never ending moving he had to do. But if you asked him to stay with you, he’d do it in a heartbeat, side by side taking everything that life entails for you both. You both take turns alternating, one does the cooking and the other does the cleaning. Although, on days when you're both too tired, takeout will do the job just fine. There’s never a mess in the home, with his training and need to keep a tidy area. If there happens to be a mess by the time he beds down, it’ll get picked up once he wakes up.

E= Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

If he’s in a serious relationship, and everything was fine, he would probably break up due to fearing for their safety. His life comes with danger that lurks around the corners, and if he feels like there’s no other to protect you he’d break it off the best way he could think of. He’d talk it through, voicing his concerns through tears, being as comforting as he could be while breaking both of your hearts. As long as you are safe, he’d stay away for as long as he had to.

F= Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How would they want to get married?)

He definitely wants you in his life forever, marriage is not off the table. If anything, being married would help give you access to things that normally you wouldn’t have, such as getting to the base’s hospital if he was ever injured. He has a lot of friends but he would most likely like to keep the wedding smaller, more intimate, with just those immediate loved ones, nothing too extravagant. But if you wanted to do a simple courthouse wedding, he’d gladly accept, as long as you’re both married in the end.

G= Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

This man is the equivalent to a teddy bear, he’d be so gentle with your emotions and feelings, never wanting to harm you in any way. Be prepared to be pampered, he’d give you so much love and adoration. Of course he wouldn’t treat you like you were fragile, he knows you are strong and can hold your own but he’ll do everything he can to make things easier for you. He believes in talking things out, not one for keeping things from one another and bottling down emotions. He likes to be entirely vulnerable with you, it deepens his love knowing he can be free of worry and judgment that would otherwise create a rift.

H= Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

As stated before, this man is always on you. He adores hugs, and practically craves them. He’d have you in his arms as much as he could, with your consent of course (although he never needs to ask anymore bc you crave his hugs as much as he does). His hugs are amazing, warm, and safe. On good days, out of pure joy, he’d lift you up and spin you around a bit before littering your face with kisses.

I= I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

It takes him a bit to say it, wanting to wait until he feels confident in your relationship being serious, he wants it to feel real and not rushed or fake. Once he says it for the first time he’ll say it every day. As many times as he can. It's the first thing he says to you when you wake, and it’s the last thing you hear when you fall asleep. He wants you to feel loved unconditionally at every moment.

J= Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

He trusts you with his whole being, he doesn’t get jealous easily or often for that matter. It takes a lot to get him to that point, but if there’s someone who is unrelenting with their advances or even making you uncomfortable he will step in. If he needs to step in to diffuse the situation he becomes a force to be reckoned with. Becomes a stone wall as a barrier, face darkening, skin practically buzzing waves of anger flowing off until the person is scared off. With you he’d get pouty.

K= Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

Joaquin’s kisses make you weak in the knees, an overwhelming sweetness, soul consuming. He’s very passionate with his kisses, regardless of how quick or small they may be. He LOVES to give you forehead kisses. They just feel so vulnerable and loving to him. In the mornings if you wake first he loves to give soft kisses to your shoulders while holding you close to him. Of course, kisses on the lips are his go to. He enjoys feeling you smiling against his own, happiness radiating off the both of you. As for him, he likes to receive forehead kisses and gentle kisses to his hands. His palms and knuckles are his weak points, it makes him feel safe and immensely cherished and safe.

L= Little Ones (How are they around children?

He’d be a little nervous around them in the beginning but once he warms up to them he’s so smitten with them. He’s soft and calming that they flock to him. He obviously respects their boundaries, not pushing them too far in games and makes sure everyone is included. He’ll do funny voices when reading stories or playing characters. He quite literally becomes a jungle gym, kids climbing and hanging off of him.

M= Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

He’s a little groggy in the morning but he does wake up early. Like super early. He’ll spend an hour in bed before he gets up and ready. If he wakes before you he’ll make a full breakfast for the both of you. But if you wake up first then you’ll make breakfast, it’ll usually be something quick and easy before one of you two has to rush off. You have a routine of chatting in the morning while getting ready, most of the time telling the other about the dream you had that night or any events coming up in the day.

N= Night (How are nights spent with them?)

Due to the odd hours he has he’s more of a night owl. He likes to stay up with you, hugging or cuddling, talking softly about the day you’ve had and anything that pops up in your heads. On days where you're both wide awake you’ll both put on face masks while watching a movie, typically using it as time to unwind. Whereas on days where one or both of you are too tired to do anything you’ll get ready for bed and just lay in each other's arms until sleep takes you both. This man definitely keeps snacks by his side of the bed. You’ll have your head resting on his chest, almost fully asleep, when you feel him move and pull up the most random food, offering you a bite when you look at him.

O= Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

He wouldn’t take too long to open up but he would keep some things to himself for a while. After you’ve been together for a while he’ll tell you the rest slowly. He wouldn’t go out of his way to hide anything from you, if it never came up on its own he wouldn’t really say unless you asked. When it’s all out in the open the two of you would tell each other everything on day to day life, staying in the loop.

P= Patience (How easily angered are they?)

Similar to when he gets jealous, it’ll take a while for him to get angry. He’s a happy person and it takes a lot to anger him. He never gets angry with you. Irritated or upset? Sure. But you both talk it out so it never escalates into full on fights. Communication is a huge factor in your relationship, and you're both incredibly patient with the other. If a fight ever does occur you give the other space and time to cool down so nothing drastic can happen.

Q= Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)

He would remember almost every little thing about, down to the T. He prides himself in remembering the small details. That weird obscure ice cream flavor you tried a long time ago and absolutely loved, he tracked down and has stocked up in the freezer for your off days.

R= Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

He treasures all of the first moments together. When you had your first date, the first kiss, the first time you told him you loved him is a constant he replays in his head. He loves it all. 

S= Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

Joaquin is incredibly protective of you. It took him almost a year when he finally introduced you to Sam and Bucky. With what he does as a living he doesn't want to take any chances with you, your safety is his top priority. You let him track you when he’s out on missions, keeping tabs, alerting you if there’s a potential threat heading your way. He’ll even ask Bucky to check in on you when he has to go dark. As for him, he likes having you there with him. Holding him and making his comfort food on his rough days. You’d ask Sam and Bucky to teach you a few things in case you ever needed to fight for Joaquin while he was unable to.

T= Try (How much effort do they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks, etc.?)

He puts his whole heart into everything for you, as you do for him. He would prefer to keep things casual when it comes to dates, not wanting to do anything out of your comfort zone. He’d put immense thought into the gifts he gives you, he always finds a way to make you beam with joy. He’d always find a way to spoil you rotten.

U= Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

His bad habits are that he's self-sacrificing and prioritizes your happiness over his. Both are common traits in most heroes. You’ve brought this up to him, voicing your concerns and fears and had him promise that he would work on them. He’d also be a little forgetful when it came to groceries. That one item you’ve been needing for weeks, yup he forgot it again after his fourth run back to the store.

V= Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

He’s not too concerned with his looks, especially when you tell him he looks amazing every morning. He’s had to look like many things while doing undercover work so the need to always look his best wasn’t ever a concern of his. Although, on very special occasions he does his best to tidy up and look jaw-dropping for you.

W= Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

The man is always hanging off of you, he feels incomplete when you’ve been apart for even ten minutes. Times when he has to spend days to weeks on end without you are brutal. You’ve become the second half of his soul, the light of his life, his joy, he feels incomplete without you if you don’t talk at all in the day.

X= Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)

On days that are rough he loves to slow dance with you. Music playing lightly in the background, the two of you are swaying together, heads resting on top of each other, eyes closed, soaking in your presence in a close embrace.

Y= Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

He doesn’t like power hungry people, especially those who don’t care what they do to other people as long as they get what they want. Anyone who betrays and breaks his trust is automatically scratched off in his books.

Z= Zzz (What are some sleep habits of theirs?)

He has to have you in his arms as he dozes off. He sleeps like a bear, warm and doesn’t move often. When he’s had an exhausting day he’ll do those really loud dad snores. He wakes up easily if there's a noise or movement, will pull you in closer and place his face in your neck once he settles down again.

Don't You Dare

Joaquin finally had a day off after being on so many missions. You wanted to surprise him by baking some of his favorite treats, chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes. He had come home in the early morning, looking exhausted and you turned him to the bedroom telling him to get some sleep which he reluctantly did after seeing how determined you were to see him rest. 

A little after midday Joaquin woke up to the smell of freshly baked cookies, leading him to the kitchen where you stood with the cute Valentine’s apron you donned most days, placing the fresh batch onto the counter to cool. The kitchen was getting warm from the oven being used, it felt amazing compared to the cold weather that was slowly seeping into the house. 

Once you caught your sleepy eyed lover inhaling over half of the still cooling batch you smacked his hands away with a grin, persuading him to help you with the cupcakes. Batter already done, he helped you pour it into an even amounts in the liners. The only thing left was to make the frosting and that was going well until you gave him full control of mixing.

“Don’t you dare. Don’t you even think about throwing that at me!” you shrieked, running away from where he had a spoonful of frosting readily aimed at you. He chased after you with his own laughter bouncing off the walls of the small kitchen, circling you around the island before firing at you, hitting your cheek as you retreated back, almost fully out of the way.

“There, I think that’s more fitting for your sweet personality, my love.”

You stood with a glint in your eyes as you came up with an excellent idea. 

“I hope you're prepared for the aftermath that’s to come. Would be a shame if-” inching closer to the island counter, keeping eye contact with him, a smirk on his face as he took you in. You grabbed some flour and immediately threw it at him, “This was to happen!”

He stood there for a moment, taking in what just happened, dusting flour off his face. “Oh, you’re in for it now. Get back here!” 

An all out war occurred, flour, powdered sugar, and frosting going everywhere as you giggled, followed by his laughter whenever your shots were blocked. All prior activities long forgotten in favor of the sweet, carefree and joyful moment.

Joaquin catches you, pulling you into his chest, swaying you both in his embrace. He hums, nose nudging your cheek, “Thank you for the treats, and the forced nap. I really needed this after the exhausting few weeks I’ve had.”

“Of course, I’m glad I was able to alleviate some of the tension for you. But remember, these are supposed to last you for the next two days so don’t eat them all in one sitting, you glutton.”

You turn back to the oven once the alarm goes off, not wanting them to burn. Glancing back at him you see him looking at you with a loving smile, feeling your cheeks heat up and you shy away moving back to the task at hand.

OOAK Masterlist

The overwhelming nausea woke you up, and you barely made it to the toilet before the contents of your stomach emptied out. You heaved some more, your body shaking from the force after each one. The bile in your mouth was enough to make you wince and spit into the toilet hoping to get rid of the taste.

Groaning, you set your head against the cold seat as the dizziness subsided a little. It was just the wake up call you needed before heading back to work. It seems the few days you had off were too short of time to readjust to your normal routine. You might as well get ready now that you’re up.

You were too busy leaving in a hurry to say bye to Billy once you checked the time, effectively running late. Hopefully you'd have time to check in with him later to see if he was faring the same. You had felt sick the entire time getting ready upon arriving on base, your stomach churning uncomfortably with unease. It might have been the food and drinks from last night or the winter air doing a number on you. For now, you shrugged it off to the best of your abilities.

There were plenty of other agents walking around when you arrived at the tarmac. A few faces you haven’t seen before looked towards you as you made your way to the chopper Sormael had instructed you to from this morning's message. They might’ve been the new hires you heard about coming in the other day. Deciding to put on a friendly face, you smiled and waved towards them as you continued walking.

“Thrasher! About time you made it, what happened to always being on time?” Sormael engulfed you in a hug, giving a firm little shake before breaking away.

“Sorry, sir. I wasn’t feeling all too well this morning and that seemed to cut into my arrival time. Won’t happen again, unless the husband has a say in it.”

“They do love to make things a little more interesting don’t you think? Are you feeling better, or do I need you to sit this one out? I have Zeru on standby seven klicks out from the target site.”

“Negative, sir. I’m much better now, only needed some fresh air and to see your wonderful face,” You bumped his shoulder against yours, sending him a lopsided grin. A gesture you’ve done countless times to let him know you were fine.

There was no chance in hell you would let Zeru, a colleague you’ve been competing against, take this job just because you felt a little sick. The two of you had an ongoing bet to see who could get more jobs done in the span of eight months, the loser had to buy the winner dinner for three weeks. And the eighth month was now coming to a close, you had one job on him but it was only a matter of time before he caught up.

“Alright, well, here’s everything you need to know,”  Sormael handed you a folder that was banded shut. “It’s a covert mission, a simple extraction job. Retrieve the data and get to the rendezvous point for further instructions. Like usual, you’ll have a ride there but you’ll need to find a way back to ensure no one can link you back here. Stay safe, the roads are freezing over. Do whatever you need to get back to us.”

“Always am.” Nodding your head in affirmation you turn to the awaiting helicopter. The snowfall began to pick up causing you to pull your coat closer to fight against the bitter cold. Harsh snowflakes pelted against your face once you got to the aircraft door. The aircraft shielded you from the oncoming storm once you got inside, sliding the door shut and getting situated in your seat.

“Morning, Agent Thrasher. Our eta is four hours, I would catch more sleep if I were you.” The pilot you recognized from previous assignments spoke through the headset. Giving him a half-assed response you went to look at the contents of the folder.

It was a fairly light folder, flipping through the papers and memorizing everything  given. Information on the building’s layout and number of personale working. Only select people had access to the server room which was located on the fifth floor, third room on the right. Attached to the last page was a small flash drive still wrapped in the package.

The nausea had finally settled down, giving you a break for the time being. But you had a sneaking suspicion that it would come back. If that was the case you'd have to make this quick.

You sent Kyle a brief text, letting him know of your whereabouts for the next few hours and decided against telling him of your sickness from the morning.

The sun had peaked through the clouds once you were high enough in airspace, warming you up from the chilly temperature. It was odd that you were cold for this long, your body had gotten used to adapting to the different temperatures over the years of constant traveling in different climates. Pulling your thick coat impossibly closer you thought it best to reserve your energy and get some sleep while you still had time.

You had everything under control, the mission was going smoothly. Entering the building and getting into the server room had gone seamlessly. The flash drive had all the needed information and the only thing left was your escape.

The earpiece you had in your ear was patched into a secure channel only the rendezvous team had access to. It was silent for now.

Normally, you would have to reach out first once in range of any rendezvous point or an appointed team member would reach out if you’ve been dark for too long.

You had carefully tucked the flash drive into a secure pocket, adjusting to make sure it was unnoticeable. The uniform you had acquired once getting into the lobby at the beginning of the mission had been doing its job perfectly as a disguise. No one was the wiser when you had gone in and when exiting the server room, the door locked after shutting closed.

Keeping your head down you walked through the hallway successfully keeping attention off of you. Turning around the corner to the stairwell, you quickly descended down the flight of stairs only passing by two people as they left through the door you just went through.

After reaching the second level another wave of nausea washed over you making you unsteady. Not again, you could only do so much while your whole world was spinning. The stale air wasn’t helping at all either. It made everything feel more restricted and claustrophobic.

You carefully walked down the remaining steps to the floor level, supporting most of your weight on the railing and wall so as to not stumble down. The more you had turned the corners of the staircase the harder it got to keep your composure. There was only one more turn before the ground floor, deciding it would be best to take a breather once you were far enough away from the building, you pushed on. Finally leaving the stairwell and taking the closest exit towards you welcomed the fresh winter air, inhaling deep breaths as it helped ease the bile that was threatening to come up long enough to make it past the parking lot to a lone car where you had stashed your things.

You shed the uniform changing into the spare outfit you had packed in the warmth of the car. Digging through your bag you found something to ease the nausea for the time being until you could take something once you got home. For now, you just hoped it would work.

Little flecks of snow slowly drifted down, dark clouds were filling up the bright sky. You drove until you were three miles out from the rendezvous point, hidden well enough to not stick out to oncomers, after concealing the car  and wiping it down of any prints left you grabbed your bag and walked the remaining way there.

As soon as you made it inside the hidden cabin and debriefed with the team after handing over the flash drive, you threw a few more logs into the dwindling flames of the fireplace to heat the small cabin up.

Your hands felt like icicles and your legs had gone numb a mile into the journey. The layers you’d put on did very little to help maintain heat.

The team informed you before they departed that the cabin was yours for the time being, well at least until after you leave before the cleaning crew arrives.

Knowing you had enough time to shower and change into more comfortable clothing made you physically relax, letting out a content sigh.

Thinking now was a good enough time to check your phone, possibly give Billy a call. If he was fairing as badly as you were then you definitely needed to apologize for possibly getting him sick.

“Billy speaking, what’s up?” He answered on the second ring, judging from the noise in the background he must’ve been home.

“Hey kid, glad I managed to reach you. Sounds like you’re home, did you make it back safely and in one piece?” Shifting the phone to hold it with your shoulder, you were able to take out an outfit and some essentials into the bathroom.

“Oh, yeah I made it back just a little after you left. I was gonna say something but you left in a hurry and I didn’t want to keep you back any later than you had to.” That seemed about right. Both you and Kyle had told him on many occasions that he didn’t need to keep things to himself, whatever it was that he needed the both of you would pause what you were doing and give him your undivided attention.

“No worries, next time go ahead and ask me to stay back a little. Speaking of which, I wanted to ask how you’re feeling? I’m feeling a little under the weather, it might’ve been the food from last night.”

“You know how I get, I just didn’t want to bother you too much. And I feel fine, if you want we can head over and bring you some soup or something?” There was a muffled sound on the line before he spoke up again. “Hey, I got to go. Keep me updated though, I think we’ll head over later today, if not tomorrow. See you later.”

“Will do, see you later kid.”

Well that was interesting. What else could be making you sick if not the food? At least he wasn’t under the weather, that made you feel better knowing you didn’t get him sick as well.

A ding from your phone pulled you out from your thoughts. It was a message from Kyle saying he was back on Earth. You sent a reply of your location and asked if he could bring a thermometer and cold medicine before hopping into the shower.

The water pressure wasn’t great but it also wasn’t the worst you had. It came out in soft bursts, fortunately the shower head was large so it covered more than a small area. The water did wonders for your aching muscles, which had been unusually sore and stiff for the past few weeks. You knew it couldn’t have been from either of the previous assignments you were on. Or for this one as a matter of fact.

At some point you must’ve dozed off, still on your feet. Deciding it was better to get out and get some actual rest without any incoming injuries, you turned off the shower and wrapped yourself in a towel. Kyle would be on his way soon, in the meantime you could busy yourself getting ready and warming up on the couch in front of the fireplace.

By the time Kyle came around you were passed out.

“Hey sleepy, I wasn’t sure what to get so I bought whatever I could find. I also brought some soup from your favorite place, it should still be hot.” Kyle helped ease you up to sit on the couch, you must’ve laid d0wn while you were sleeping. 

“Oh, hi,” you rubbed the sleep out of your eyes with a smile. “How long have you been here?”

He put a hand to your forehead, “Long enough to know you were tossing and turning for a while. On the bright side you don’t have a temperature but better safe than sorry, take this.” He handed you a water bottle and two tylenol from one of the two bags he had, which you gladly accepted and took.

Once you finished your water Kyle traded it for a container of soup. It was still hot enough to warm you up. He plopped down next to you with his own food, digging in once he knew you could eat fully on your own.

“Thank you, I think the soup is helping me some. How are the fellas doing? Causing more chaos for the team I assume?”

“Oh you know it, nothing but the best from Guy. I also may have enabled him… just a little bit.” his smile had a hint of mischief with the knowing look he gave you.

“Of course, babe,” you nudged him with your shoulder, “ ‘Just a little bit’ my ass. You totally orchestrated whatever it was. I feel bad for the poor soul who was on the receiving end of you two maniacs.”

He threw his head back in a laugh. “You know me so well. It wasn’t too bad this time, I swear. Oh, I forgot. Before I left you said you had something you wanted to tell me?”

Ah, you had completely forgotten about that. You tried racking your brain for the right words to explain this best. After five years together it was kind of hard to just come out and say you had been lying to him all that time about yourself. Well, in a way you weren’t lying, just always avoiding mentoning your past and family.

“Uhm,” your hands clasped together in your lap as you leaned forward, “You know how I aoid talking about my past with you or brush it off when you ask me about it?”

He put his food down to give you his full attention, motioning for you to continue once he sat back, grabbing one of your hands in reassurance.

“Gosh this is hard, uhm. I want you to know that I didnt tell you because I don’t trust you, more because I was scared to tell you. I guess the best way is to rip the bandaid off. But more or less I was… Batman’s daughter, this was years ago of course. I don’t actually know if he told anyone in the league about me since I wasn’t one of the many side-kicks.”

“I think I remember Alfred having some photos of when you were young laying around the mansion when I lived there for a bit, I asked them about it but no one really said anything. Figured it was a sore subject. Im going to be honest, I’m a little hurt that you didn’t tell me sooner but I understand having moments of the past haunting you.”

“There’s more I would like to tell you,” I pulled him towards me more, “But I’d rather tell you once we get home. How about we head over once we’re done eating?”

“No problem, eat as much as you can and we'll take the leftovers with us.” Kyle grabbed his container and gestured at you to eat with a forkful halfway to his mouth.

It had been two weeks later when you decided to see your agency’s doctor to check out your recent sickness. You had been expecting a stomach bug, or the flu, the last thing you expected was finding out you were ten weeks pregnant. Ten weeks. Kyle, who went with you almost and passed out from the news, was still taking his time processing everything you told him, rightfully so. The two of you were sent home with congratulations and several pictures of your growing bean. It had felt too surreal, and overwhelming.

All that happened three days ago, now you and Kyle were just entering your apartment after buying some pregnancy essentials for you when a noise from the kitchen alerted you of an intruder. You reached for your sheathed knives, usually strapped to your thighs, out of reflex before Kyle stopped you, rushing forward with the bat you normally kept by the front door.

“Fuck man, I could killed you!” Kyle’s alarmed voice steadied your racing heart after realizing it was someone he knew. You slowly made your way to the kitchen, their muffled voices getting clear the further you walked down te hallway. One being Kyle’s and the other you now recognized to be Guy Gardner, who you haven’t actually met but have seen through videos either of your boys have shown you.

“You’re brave for knocking up Batman’s long lost daughter,” Guy pointed to the ultrasound photo pinned on the fridge. “I don’t envy you one bit man. And you must be the lovely wife. Guy Gardner, great to finally meet the mysterious lady Rayner’s been hiding from me.”

“How’d you know we’re married?” Kyle looked alarmed and confused.

“Well, you do have your wedding pictures laying ‘round the place.” He pointed out to the living room where the photos had been conveniently placed on the coffee table.

With a sigh and shake of your head, you held out your hand to Guy. “Y/N Rayner, pleased to finally meet this doofus’ best friend he speaks highly of.”

The morning had been going on quite well, in fact it was a little concerning. Something was always bound to happen in your line of work. There’s never a dull moment when living as a vigilante, even when dating and living with another. Especially when said vigilante happens to be a green lantern. More specifically the freelance artist green lantern who’s known for creating gigantic gundams.

He’s a great boyfriend and chaos has a tendency to follow him wherever he goes. Thus, chaos followed you as well like an unshakeable cold. Most of the time it was manageable but it seemed like today was heading towards a direction you certainly did not like once a fellow vigilante had called you for backup on a case they were working on.

Donna Troy was a close friend to both you and your boyfriend, so whenever she asked for aid you normally drop what you're doing and go support and vise versa.

She needed help closing up her case by stopping a shipment from leaving the docks. She had intel there were five cargo crates that needed to be obtained with a small crew handling the drop off. The case had been in the works for two months deep undercover. Donna was not one to slack off when it came to things like this. She’d informed you these crates were filled with containers of lethal weaponized chemicals that could cause a national ecocatastrophe.

Getting there was an easy job, waiting for the package took longer than expected. At one point you thought maybe Donna had gotten her intel wrong. It had been hours of sitting in the same position and your body was starting to lock up. You desperately needed to stretch out. Before you could voice your worries however, the loading trucks carrying the crates arrived.

“Thrasher, there’s six coming out of the truck not including the driver. Stay concealed until I give you the signal,” Donna whispered. She was making her way over to the truck where the crew began unloading. She slowly picked off one by one, starting with the driver who had gotten out to smoke.

As Donna made it to the last one the back doors flew open and more came barging out with weapons. “Well Donna, I’m gonna take that as my signal unless you’d rather I sit this one out?” You spoke through the coms.

“A little help would be great you little asshole! Now get down here!”

You unsheathed your trusty daggers and made your way down from your high perch, effectively dropping two goons on your way down from the silent jump. Unsheathing the knives from their holsters you threw them to their targets who went down with no issues.

There were only a handful left. You slashed down whoever was near you while Donna was moving the crates away.

“Hey, have you gotten the crates to a secure place yet? I know-” you choked out in pain. Looking down you saw a narrow spear half sticking out of your right shoulder.

“Okay, I just got the last of them secured. Heading over your way,” Her voice crackled through the com piece in your ear.

“Son of a bitch!” you gasped as you broke off the end of the spear after a few hacks from one of your daggers. You made sure to keep it in your shoulder so you wouldn’t bleed out but the edges are going to cause more harm than good if you can’t fix it fast.

Once your arm had more movement you went after the remaining goons who were left standing. They weren’t too much trouble compared to the others you had just fought but they carry stranger weapons.

Donna had made it back in time to catch you before you tumbled down. Only after convincing her you were fine to make it back to yours on your own did you make it inside your small apartment.

Kyle had spotted you instantly on the couch once he got back, rushing up to you with shaky hands at the sight of blood pooling out from the wound. “Hey, hey look at me. Let’s get you to the bathroom so I can clean you up, okay? Can you walk on your own?”

When you slowly shook your head no he carefully lifted you up and carried you to the bathroom. He waited until he was finished with rubbing the blood off with a damp towel and disinfecting the wound before carefully pulling out what was left of the narrow spear. You instructed him through patching you up, reminding him you’re fine just woozy from blood loss.

After Kyle gave you medication for the pain he took you to the bedroom carefully tucking you under the covers.

“You know…” He made it a point to gesture at your bandaged shoulder, “You truly are a holy one.”

You gave him an unimpressed look and scoffed at his little joke.

“So, are you going to tell me what happened or do I have to bribe you to let me in?” Kyle pulled you into his arms, your back towards his chest,  as he slipped into bed next to you, avoiding your injury to not cause any more damage. Which you were very grateful for.

You let out a shaky sigh, your head was still spinning albeit slower than it was a moment ago. “I uh, it was from a case I was helping out with. There wasn’t much going on, I only had to lend a hand when things got to be too much. I can feel the face you’re making right now. If it makes you feel any better I was careful for the most part. It was just the end when I got this nifty souvenir.”

He let out a small bemused huff through his nose, “What am I going to do with you?”

“Well, for starters you could graciously put a ring on it.”

You could feel the vibrations of his laughter begin to lull you to sleep. You let your eyes flutter closed and your breathing finally evened out.

Once Kyle knew you were fully asleep he pulled you in closer, reassuring himself that you were still alive, still here. He went to sleep knowing he was planning a trip for the two of you with the small ring box he had hidden away deep in his pants drawer.

The Origins [Fanboy H.C.]

TWAHF Masterlist

You were around the tiny age of five when you two first met.

It was your first day of kindergarten and you were absolutely terrified! This was a BIG transition for your tiny mind!

After being dropped off in your classroom you were guided to your assigned table that was shared with another student and was grouped together with another table pushed in front of yours (forming a small group of four)

Your assigned table partner was a small boy with a head full of curly hair, barely reaching his eyes and a bright smile that rivaled the sun.

He saw your tearful face, reached for your hand introducing himself as Mickey, saying not to worry, he was going to protect you from bad guys; immediately taking you under his wing and befriending you.

Which is exactly what he did, even after you gained enough courage to stick up for yourself.

That school year the two of you spent almost every day at his place after school, you were instantly accepted as part of the Garcia household from the first moment you set foot in the door.

In middle school you had developed a small crush that quickly blossomed into something much deeper during the next few years.

What you didn’t know during the time was Mickey had those very same feelings that he was also hiding.

The two of you were always together, when one of you was spotted the other was trailing not too far off. He had taken you as his plus one to all of the schools’ social events, always having a blast at the dances.

The only time he hadn’t been your date was the high school homecoming dance, junior year. He had contracted a bad case of the stomach flu, he was bedridden for about two weeks.

Mickey told you he didn’t want you missing out on the party, they had rented this famous DJ for the music and everyone had been so excited for it.

Reluctantly you went with some baseball player that asked you to go with his group of friends. It had been awkward for you since you knew none of them too well, they were more acquaintances than they were friends.

Not even halfway through the dance you left after your date had ditched you. The dance had been boring without the chaotic energy you missed dearly from Mickey. You had been walking without really thinking of where you were going.

Which is how you found yourself being welcomed into the Garcia’s living room by Mickey’s mom, telling you he was in his bedroom taking  a nap but he’d be happy to see you.

Once he’d woken up, after a few concerned questions as to why you were there and not at the dance, you had both shared your feelings for one another.

It was very nerve-wracking when you went first and it took his brain a moment to catch up. Your head was filled with thoughts of possibly losing your best friend of a lifelong friendship from ruining it by not keeping your feelings to yourself.

When his brain essentially rebooted he had the biggest smile that melted all negative thoughts away.

Mickey pulled you into a kiss, and told you he felt the same while resting his forehead against yours.

(His mom definitely heard everything and was not-so-quietly celebrating).

If people thought you two were inseparable before you started dating… 

Towards the end of your senior year in high school Mickey told you his plans of joining the navy. It was something he was always interested in, one of the many things you first learned about him. In turn, you told him your plans of becoming a navy SEAL.

Mickey’s family threw a graduation and farewell party for the both of you, a week after your graduation. The party was more of a barbecue so the scene was more comfortable and chill. It was nice to see all your friends and family before you had to leave. You stayed in Mickey’s room that night, wanting to be with each other one last time before you’d be able to see each other again.

You would leave for navy boot camp first the day after the party. That day had everyone in tears, it wasn’t goodbye, it was a see you later.

You went to a different basic training from Mickey’s that started before his. The both of you were able to send each other letters, although they were practically novels. Even if the letters did take a while to come in, it made the anticipation all the more worth it.

The letters you received were what kept you going through the hard times. A few of your fellow bunkmates teased you for a while about them, collectively agreeing on calling Mickey ‘Loverboy’.

In one letter you found out your beloved boyfriend got his callsign. It had partially been your fault. One of his drill instructors saw him while he was writing one of his longer letters to you, a scene that drill instructor had seen countless of times. So you get that and pepper in the fact of him being a huge Star Trek nerd got him dubbed as ‘Fanboy’.

About a month later you received your callsign ‘Wraith’ from an interaction with a group of instructors. It was a moment that certainly went down in the books.

For Mickey, training was at most 2 years. Once he was finished there was a small break before his first deployment, so he flew out to visit you. That’s when he decided to pop the big question and asked you to marry him. Of course you said yes!

You still had another year of training left and thought it best to have the wedding after you finished. But all that waiting paid off in the end.
