“Oh, you know, other my completely failed marriage, nothing much.” She made a face before she shook her head with a wry smile. “No, uh… I actually have started seeing someone new…”

“Oh? Do tell.” Leslie leaned in to nudge her a little, “Please, let me live vicariously through you.” She needed to get out more. These days it just felt like she was always sitting around waiting for Scott to get home.

Scott had just gotten back, and he moved inside and that was when he seen Leslie with their son. And he couldn’t help but smile a little bit. Moving over to them, he leaned down and gave her a quick kiss. “Hi, my love.” His eyes drifted to their son. “How is the little man?”

Leslie had been sitting behind Declan on the floor, his back resting against her as she read one of his books to him. He laughed at every silly voice she gave the characters and it honestly lit up her whole world. They both smiled up at Scott as he walked in, Leslie stretching up to kiss him too. “Hi, honey.” She ruffled their son’s hair and closed the book. “He’s been hearing all about Narnia. Even read a few words himself.” It was small, simple words and she had to say them before he did, but she was still incredibly proud. “How is my other favourite man?”

“Men, huh?” She joked lightly, shaking her head. “Hm… red wine.”

“Don’t even get me started.” Leslie shook her head too. “Sounds perfect. Another glass over here.” She directed the request at the bartender. “So what’s been happening with you?”

Jeff looked up at the woman, confused that she was talking to him. “Um, wait, what? Do we know each other?”

“Oh...” Leslie’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Sorry, I thought you were someone else.” Her eyes drifted around the room, but the person she was supposed to be meeting was clearly gone. “Obviously I’ve been stood up for being so late.”

“Don’t worry.” Sarah smiled, feeling anxious but she did her best to try not to show it. She’d liked chatting to the woman and her kid in the park when they met and she figured making friends was something she should do… she should live while she had another chance, right? “A little bit but I don’t mind.”

“Still. I’m sorry. I hate being late.” Leslie was clearly irritated by Scott working late, but it also didn’t help that she had never really shaken the feeling that he was hiding something from her. “What are you drinking?” She asked with a sigh as she sat down beside her. “How have you been?”

“Oh, don’t worry about it.” Vanessa waved a hand, putting her phone down. “Not too long, it’s fine. I take it Scott got home eventually then.” She chuckled.

“Yes, he finally made an appearance.” Leslie shook her head and sat down beside Vanessa. “I love him, but his timekeeping is abysmal. How are things with you?”

Cynthia nodded. “As long as they have the ingredients that is all that should matter.” She agreed.  She looked down at her own glass, realizing it was almost empty with a slight frown.  “It’s a Negroni.”

“If a sixteen year old can make something from ingredients in their parents’ kitchen when they have an empty, then a bartender should be able to do the same.” She agreed. “Excellent.” Leslie turned back to the bar, “Young man, I will take two Negroni’s, if that’s something you can manage to recreate.”

“I’m sorry they couldn’t make the drink you wanted. You would think they would have to take classes every few months to stay up on the trends.” Cynthia mused, taking another sip of her drink.

“You would think.” Leslie scoffed, shaking her head. “Can’t just do a crash course and think that’s you set for life. At the very least, when someone explains a drink, you should be competent enough to give it a go.” She sighed, trying to brush off her annoyance. “What are you drinking?”

“Hey, no, uh… actually, I was a little bit late myself.” She admitted with a laugh. “So it was kind of a relief, in a way. Declan okay?”

“Oh, good.” She breathed a sigh of relief as she leaned against the bar. “Oh, he’s fine. He’s always getting held up at work, I just thought he might have at least tried to get back on time.” She shook her head before signalling the bartender. “What are you drinking?”

Cynthia looked over at the person next to her as they tried to explain something to the bartender. “That doesn’t sound right, but I’m not sober enough to correct you.”

Leslie sighed at the bartender, “Just bring me a chardonnay, please.” She turned to the other woman, “I assure you, it’s real. Cocktails just continue to become increasingly complicated.”

“I’m sorry what?” Isabel questioned, trying to get the stupid thing to open. She was clearly having a day or something. // @secretsummerstarters​

“I asked if you needed help with that?” Leslie repeated, “I mean, not from me- I’ve just had a manicure- but from someone. I could lure someone over with a feigned desperation?”

“No… it’s okay.” She smiled, giving a little shrug. Kids… she was more able to be around children now that she’d been getting to know little Sarah but she still had that hole in her heart from the baby she could have had. “How old is he?” She wondered, watching as he moved to pick up his toys when his mother asked.

Leslie was lost in thoughts of Jamie Kirk when she asked her question and she almost had to ask her to repeat it. However, the words quickly caught up to her. “He’s three.” She smiled as her attention returned to Sarah. “He’s a terror sometimes, but he’s the absolute light of my life.”
