“Because she thinks Eric will get jealous over that fact. Cause she hates the fact that he’s married to Imogen, someone below her standards. So to speak and she just wants to tear them apart and have Eric take the kids. With how close she is to my mother, I agreed to reluctantly help her. Eric is my best friend, and for once in his life he’s happy. But you can’t just say something like that to Linda Matthews and get away with it.” He sighed a little bit. “And it’s not like I can go to Eric and say hey your manipulative bitch mother is using me to break up your marriage.”

“What, does he like the girl or something?” Why else would she think it would make him jealous, right? Vanessa thought this was all a bit fucked up and she didn’t really understand how people could set all this up. This was major issues to her and Linda Matthews sounded like she needed some serious therapy. “I mean... maybe you could?”

“Yes, Alexa is my fake girlfriend. Linda Matthews..she is uhh a real piece of work. And very protective over her kids especially Eric given what happened to him.” 

“That... doesn’t make any sense, I don’t understand. Why would you guys fake dating.. do anything?”

“We need to..” Sebastian sighed a little bit, looking over at her. “You didn’t get the wrong idea..”

“Come on, Sebastian... you have a girlfriend.”

Of course Sebastian noticed that she was being colder than usual and he couldn’t blame her. This whole fake dating thing was getting out of hand and he needed to back out of it. But Linda was a force to be reckoned with. “Okay, I deserve that. But hear me out okay?” He asked, as he moved to sit down across from her.

“Look, let’s just... not do this, okay?” Vanessa sighed, feeling embarrassed. “I clearly got the wrong idea. It’s fine...”

“Did you need something?” Vanessa couldn’t help but be just a little bit colder this time. She felt a bit stupid that she’d thought he could have been flirting with her when she found out at the wedding he had a freaking girlfriend.

She chuckled, then looked at him and nodded after a moment’s thought. “Yes, definitely. Lead the way.”

“Yes, he finally made an appearance.” Leslie shook her head and sat down beside Vanessa. “I love him, but his timekeeping is abysmal. How are things with you?”

Vanessa chuckled. “I’d say he needs to invest in a new watch but he probably wouldn’t look at it.” She joked. “Yeah, things are fine, y’know. Just busy... I’ve had to work a lot of hours. You?”

Sebastian chuckled lightly before clapping some. “You totally kicked that guys ass.” He teased lightly while moving over to her.

“It’s what I do best.” She joked, chuckling as she looked over at him.

“Maybe it’s time to take a break?” She suggested, concern clear in her tone. “What work have you been doing?”

“I’m a psychiatrist.” She smiled lightly, shrugging. “I don’t have a lot of time off scheduled at the moment.”

“And that is how it’s done!” She laughed, turning triumphantly to the tiny crowd beside her as she beat one of the games, spotting Sebastian as she did.

Emma nodded her head a little bit, knowing that she was right. “Yeah, you are right about that but sometimes it’s hard to believe that.” She sighed a little bit, twisting the ring on her finger. “I loved her and apart of me always will. But there was a look in her eyes when I left every time. Basically begging me to stay and I can’t help but wonder if my own mother had that same look in her eyes when it comes to my biological father. Or maybe I’m reading too much into my own memories and she never had that look.”

Vanessa nodded because she understood what Emma meant. It was never easy. “Have you thought about talking to Imogen about it?” She wondered. “Sometimes, our mind will hook onto something that feels unfinished or unresolved... does that make sense?” She wrote down a note about Emma’s bio dad though. They’d come back to that.
