i have a little switch in my head. its two settings are âdo everything immediatelyâ and âdo nothing at allâ. i do not control what the switch is set to, and there is no third setting
One of the distinctive features of Old Norse poetry is the use of kenning: a circumlocutory device in which a straightforward noun is replaced with an allusive phrase.
For example, a ship might be referred to as a âwaveâs horseâ; a sword, a âwound-serpentâ; a shield, âthe shame of swordsâ, and so forth. Sometimes, kennings could be embedded in other kennings - thus, one might have âfeeder of war-gullsâ = âfeeder of ravensâ = âwarriorâ; this is known as a doubled or extended kenning.
Though many conventions of English literature can be traced back to Old Norse roots, kenning isnât much encountered these days - at least, not in most genres. Thereâs one particular genre where the art of kenning is alive and well, though.
Iâm speaking, of course, of erotic fanfic.
Whether youâre referring to a penis as a âpork-truncheonâ or a vagina as a âsquish-pocketâ (both examples Iâve seen employed in all apparent seriousness, incidentally), that perfectly fits the form and function of a kenning. Indeed, these examples even adhere to the idiosyncratic grammatical structure of many Old Norse kennings, with the base word being modified by an uninflected noun determinant inserted as a compound prefix.
Euphemisms for sex acts, meanwhile, can be even more baroque, forming multi-level allusions in the manner of doubled/extended kennings. âTo ride the baloney ponyâ, for example, employs the act of riding a horse as an allusion to penetrative sexual intercourse - but the contained phrase âbaloney ponyâ is, itself, a kenning of the simple type, with âponyâ as the base word and âbaloneyâ as the determinant, making the whole phrase a doubled kenning.
There are practical reasons for this sort of practice, of course; e.g., complex euphemisms can help sexually explicit works sneak through content filters. Still, itâs kind of fascinating that smutty fanfic has managed to preserve - in virtually unaltered state - a poetic form thatâs otherwise been largely extinct in English literature for the better part of a thousand years.
The best thing about the Temeraire series is that no matter which pov character you have (Laurence or Temeraire) it's still got all the elements of a classic horse girl story.
Laurence has all of the wonder of learning about dragons, the thrill of flying, etc. He enters a society where he's unsure of his place, like a poor girl getting a scholarship at a riding stable and having to contend with all the cliques and snobbery.
Temeraire is the dragon equivalent of a feral horse girl who goes BALLISTIC when anyone tries to sell his pet human to the glue factory harm Laurence. Other dragons in China (his family) have asked him "hmm wouldn't you like another human of a better pedigree who was properly trained educated?", and Temeraire went NOPE THIS ONE IS MINE!!! HE IS THE BEST HUMAN AND WE WILL WIN ALL THE BATTLES!"
Agdgsgsgsg Iâm LIVING for this Reef2Reef thread. This guy was worried about his urchins getting sunburnt so he made them little hats
IT GETS BETTER
In the wild these urchins will in fact carry a small rock or shell exactly on top like this and im so happy thereâs people taking advantage of that and who care about their urchins as pets.
i visited an aquarium at some point, and our tour guide told that when the staff had a party, they put a little decorative plastic hat from a booze bottle into the sea urching tank, and just left it there because the sea urchins liked it, and kept taking turns in wearing it.
Discovering that sea urchins wearing hats is a thing in this world means so much to me rn

Stop telling yourself that the grass is greener on the other side, because itâs not. It is greener where you water it. So take control of your life and start watering your own pastures and grow your own greener grasses.
Fuck grass, clover is a nitrogen fixing legume and dandelions are super useful. Be the weeds. Grow on concrete in defiance of those who would thwart you.
Itâs also greener where you bury a body
This post really goes for a ride.
You know how Laurence calls Temeraire âMy Dearâ all the time? Imagine 1960s-70s aviators constantly calling their dragons âBabeâ.
âOh babe. I would choose you over any space launch.â
âIskierka, what you did was impulsive, capricious, and melodramatic but it was also wrong.â

âIskierka, weâve been through this hundreds of times. Can you just chill out? Is that possible, Iskierka? Can you just chill out a little?â

I just love how in English you say âgreat minds think alikeâ, which is a completely positive thing since youâre kinda praising yourself, but in German you go like âzwei Dumme, ein Gedankeâ = âtwo fools, one thoughtâÂ
German is beautiful, isnât it
Kind of reminds me when my french teacher explained us the french idiom âLâespoir fait vivreâ (Hope makes us live) and he asked me how Germans say it and I was like âHope dies lastâ and his legit answer was:
âSee, thatâs why no one likes you!â
