Day Two is over. Finally. No reprimand from the principal via the secretary. I did, however, turn in ALL of the forms to the library, not just the white copy (like we were told to do last week). Apparently, that makes me a bad person. I guess I'll need Valium to sleep tonight. Oh wait! No I don't. Any day I don't have to deal with my principal is a good day. Today was a good day.

I’ll take this one since I’m the blog’s resident Jew. Oy vey, where do I start…
SJ community loves to police Jewish identity and silence actual Jews when they talk about their own identities. This usually happens in context of either “Are Jews White?” or “Jewishness is just a religion” conversations. In reality, Jews are an ethnoreligious group that ethnically originated in the middle east, and while some ethnic Jews have light skin, it’s actually due to centuries of forced assimilation in European and Slavic countries through rape, which is a big reason why Jewishness is matrilineal. Furthermore, there exist Jews who do not look white at all. There are black, brown, and asian Jews who are all ethnically Jewish, and these conversations erase them.
"Jewish privilege". Fact: It’s not a thing. It’s actually a very common anti-semitic trope that says that Jews run everything so they are not oppressed. Jews are oppressed, and face anti-semitic violence.
"Anti-semitism is not just about Jews, there are other semitic people." While yea, there are other semitic people, the term "anti-semitism" was created by Germans in the 19th century to refer specifically to the hatred of Jews because it sounded more scientific.
Blaming anti-semitic violence in Europe on the actions of Israel. I see this literally every single day on this site, and it’s very upsetting. Jews that live in the diaspora are not responsible for Israel’s actions, and especially should not be suffering at the hands of white people in Europe under the guise of anti-zionism.
Finally, and this is a big pet peeve of mine. The only people I ever see reblogging posts about anti-semitism are other Jews. Even a lot of my non-Jewish followers will reblog posts about racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. but ignore posts about anti-semitism, and that as a Jew makes me feel unsafe.

Well, Day One of the 2014-2015 school year is over. Thank the powers that be. I'm special. How many other teachers get reprimanded on the first day the kiddies come back? That has to be a record, especially as no alcohol was involved. While I was busy dealing with a student with concerns regarding her 504, I didn't pay attention to the announcement that stated students were not to be dismissed to lunch until the tardy bell was rung. Silly me, but I figured the student having the hissy fit took priority over kids going to lunch early. Even better, my principal had a secretary deliver the reprimand instead of doing it themselves. Now wasn't that special?
Additionally, 24 of my 26 honors students showed up, 23 of 24 in my third period showed up, and my fourth period OCS Applied Science went from seven students (with an average IQ of 70) to nine students (with an average IQ of 65. One of these students cannot read...at all. How exactly am I supposed to teach someone who cannot read, despite intensive one-on-one instruction with a trained reading specialist? Mary Poppins I am not.
How was everyone else's first day of school?
Where do our planet’s oceans come from? New research done in part at Brookhaven shows it may come from the rocks deep in the Earth’s mantle.
The water is trapped inside a blue rock called ringwoodite that sits between the Upper Mantle and Lower Mantle in a spot called the Transition Zone about 450 miles beneath the Earth’s surface.
Northwestern geophysicist Steve Jacobsen and University of New Mexico seismologist Brandon Schmandt have found deep pockets of magma in this zone, an indicator of water that is squeezed out of the rocks by enormous pressures and temperatures.
Jacobsen and his team used a diamond-anvil cell at one of the UV beamlines at our National Synchrotron Light Source to mimic those pressures on a sample of ringwoodite. Compressed between two tiny diamonds and laser-heated to almost 3000 degrees Fahrenheit, the sample sweated out its water.
But it’s not in a form familiar to us — it’s not liquid, ice, or vapor. It’s water trapped in the molecular structure of the minerals in the mantle rock. If just one percent of the weight of mantle rock located in the Transition Zone is H2O, that would be equivalent to nearly three times the amount of water in our oceans!!
