So; birth did NOT go the way I expected at all. People aren't kidding when they laugh and tell you not to get too attached to your birth plan. Luckily I took that advice.
Original idea: home birth in a pool using only gas and air and hypnobirthing techniques.
What happened: 12 hour natural labour, stalled. Induced in hospital for an intense further 14 hour labour that included the use of an epidural (which I had sworn I would never have) and ended in an emergency c section.
Things I wish people had told me?; When your waters finally go, it is an actual tidal wave. Multiple times. You will definitely question if you've wee'd yourself and wonder how your body could produce so much fluid... as it does regenerate throughout labour.
C section recovery actually isnt as bad as you'd think, just use your common sense, take the painkillers and accept the help. Getting an infection on the other hand ... ouch.
That amazing rush of love everyone talks about as soon as they're born is bollocks and rare. Especially after an eventful or long labour... you will feel emotionally disjointed and unconnected to reality and your baby. That's okay. Don't feel guilty, that bond will come but it's not all sunshine and daisies and takes time. It's enough to know that you love them, but if you're not feeling it straight away don't panic, that's so normal for some... after all you've only just met the little critter.
Once baba arrives, you will wake up in a cold sweaty panic sometimes that something bad has happened to your bundle of joy and worry starts to take over. It doesn't matter how sure you are of yourself before birth, the new responsibility you feel is a lot.
Even if you have a horrendous labour and birth and at the time, would have traded your life to get the contractions to stop... it is so easy to only see all the positives and all the negatives melt away once you settle into your new reality.
Note to self; do not try and buy a house whilst pregnant again.
Pregnancy makes you grumpy as hell, buying a house is the most stressful thing in the world. The sort of stress that only drinking alleviates... Now you are stuck in stressy grumpy bubble, because you cannot drink.
Juuuuuustt dandy.
