When @brenebrown shared this quote on her podcast, I was driving home from work. She mentioned how she has thought about it consistently since she heard it. I had to pull over and take a deep breath. It is so powerful and so incredibly true, I needed to not be driving a vehicle when I heard it. “White supremacy is not the elephant in the room. It is the room.” #NelbaMarquezGreene I may be part of different marginalized communities. I am a #queer, #gendernonconforming, #jew living in the south. But I have never experienced the hostility of brutality, mentally or physically, because of my skin color. Even I, with my #trans umbrella, a yellow #StarofDavid on my chest, I reap the rewards of #whitesupremacy. I was awarded certain privileges just by being born with this skin tone and what is between my legs. I did nothing to earn these. And yet I am richer with more opportunities, most of which I have not cashed in on or taken advantage of (like not being killed by the police for playing the violin). White supremacy is not the elephant in the room. It is the room. This is the backbone of the #unitedstatesofamerica. And to the republic for which it stands. That #indivisible part? That #liberty and #justice for all? It’s bullshit. “When you know better, do better.” #mayaangelou Do.
