"but the text never explicitly stated it!!!" hey, so that's actually what they tried to teach you in those english classes you barely passed 😁
i am so so gently asking abled storytellers to try this little exercise: consider that maybe the main character doesn't miraculously get through traumatic event number 8277 with minor injuries. maybe they don't make a full, narratively-convenient recovery. there are tangible, long-term effects on their health. they are disabled. there are lots of ways to be disabled, and you can pick whatever makes the most sense. the point is that because they're the main character, they have to stay at the heart of the narrative. what happens to your story after that? just for the sake of this exercise, you're not allowed to have them spiral into helpless depression, or collapse under self-loathing, or turn their story into a quest for a cure or an uplifting recovery narrative. think it through instead. how can you tell this story with the character's disability? what needs to change? are there any reasons why these changes can't happen?
at the end of it, you might change nothing. but I think this is worth doing, because sometimes you'll find that the reason you didn't want your character to have a limp, or lose a limb or sense, or have some kind of SFF-appropriate fantasy disability is because of internalised biases. those are worth challenging & i truly believe that creators miss out on richer stories when they view disability either as a fate worse than death or as nothing more than a catalyst for tragedy.
its kinda hard to celebrate trans day of visibility because the visibility we're getting lately is like
quora is one of the most terrifying social networks on earth which i think is why all the most powerful posters can be found there
bless this woman Bonnie Wingate. this little piece of short nonfiction brings tears to my eyes every time i stop to read it through
me hanging out with black people in the summer: “aye, yall don’t forget to put on sunscreen”
them:
@flipflibberinflippinghell
Use the Walgreens Brand which is pretty cheap and it does wonders and doesn’t leave me with a white cast. And I’m dark as hell so I hate looking ashy but not all sunscreens are made equally and it’s one of the better ones I’ve used.
Wait cocoa/shea butter and coconut oil don’t protect you from the sun we really do need sunscreen??
Yea fam. All that “we don’t need sunscreen” shit is a myth. Combine that with the fact that most dermatologists don’t know how to spot skin cancer in Black people and it’s a nasty combination.
Yeah, it’s harder for us to get it but when we do it’s deadly. I know two people who died of skin cancer, both were Black.
“While incidence of melanoma is higher in the Caucasian population, a July 2016 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed it is more deadly in people of color. African American patients were most likely to be diagnosed with melanoma in its later stages than any other group in the study, and they also had the worst prognosis and the lowest overall survival rate.”

Sorry about the link, I’m on mobile. But this is from August 2016, which I know isn’t the most recent but it’s still SUPER IMPORTANT. Y’all please wear sunscreen. With Google it’s even easy to find smaller, Black-owned brands.
https://blackgirlsunscreen.com/ is Black-owned!
guys I just found the greatest video on the internet
people who tell you to stop reading the news to "regulate your nervous system" do not have your best interests at heart. if following current events makes you spiral you probably need a better analytical frame, not less information
and the analytical frame you need is probably dialectical materialism
i'm totally crazy, i freak out all the time, but you know what helps me most? learning. reading. studying. discussing. sometimes you do need a nap, but sometimes you need a conversation with someone more knowledgeable/experienced, or a day at the (physical or digital) library. and really i think everyone has a different baseline emotional register that's best for them and their circumstances, but i recommend aiming to feel solid and anchored, not necessarily "calm." of course we won't feel "calm" after reading about genocide. but if we approach what we're reading correctly, it can strengthen our resolve; feed our fighting spirit; show us paths to liberation. a lot of people in my life have diagnosed me with "revolutionary optimism" and wonder how i maintain that mindset but i'm not an optimist by nature, it all comes from studying
There is also a difference between "reading the news" (a news app, your local paper; ways to stay informed) and "reading 500 posts about the news" (designed to make you feel hopeless and enraged)
Top 3 ways to pronounce "worms":
woims (old-timey New York gangster)
wurrums (Scottish)
weuhrms (bad French accent like the narrator from spongebob)
the narrative: *starts the third act by repeating a scene from the first act but now it has a totally different context*
me: ohoHOhohoHOHOhoHO
Drives me genuinely insane that kids-only spaces on the internet like Club Penguin were destroyed because companies realised that there’s only so much profit you can squeeze out of children with no disposable income, so now kids are being forced into adult spaces on the internet where the profit model is to find the most viewers you can passively expose to ads that nobody is clicking on so all online media is slowly turning into Mr Beast Elsagate nightmares, and for adults this means giving your ID to companies owned by businessmen with Epstein connections to keep the kids “safe.” Clown internet.

everyone on tumblr rn for some reason
A note on this post:
To my recollection, for a long time Ides of March meming on Tumblr was confined to the day itself. You'd log in on the 15th and your dash would be all Julius Caesar memes and be like ohh it's the Ides of March today, ok!
Over time it has expanded & last year was the first time I became aware of substantial pre-gaming. The Ides of March has been a big annual meme on Tumblr for years but it being preceded by 2 full weeks of people getting hyped up is pretty recent.
There's also recently been an element of hmm almost roleplaying to it? Various newer posts circulating with people pretending like they're personally gonna stab Caesar.
Anyway that's what this meme is in reference to!! thank you 👍
#it's so commercialized these days #time was you'd never start celebrating ides of march before MAR/10 (mario day) #now they start playing ides of march carols in february
