it bothers me when someone brings up misogyny in shounen anime and people shrug it off with "its designed for teenage boys, what can you expect." like well. idk i think its actually pretty important that shows for teenage boys are normal about women. i mean i think all media should be normal about women but teenagers are impressionable i think we could put a little bit of feminism in the teenage boy shows. it might do some good. you never know.

the other thing about Internet dogpiling is that it is just not possible to think clearly during the acute stages. it’s so easy to criticize people for responding defensively or tactlessly to mass criticism but I cannot overstate the degree to which your brain becomes a rat in a trap. I think we do have to temporarily recalibrate our expectations in these circumstances and accept that they do not necessarily represent how that person responds to criticism. the skills for self-regulating and reacting to normal interpersonal criticism are not the same skills needed to respond to viral callouts.

for those curious, this is joanne, a 15-year-old sumatran tiger currently living at phoenix zoo. it's very sweet to see her playing and tumbling around like this at her age -- she's got some people taking care of her if she still has this energy at that age.

i did see some users in the notes who were concerned about her looking 'scrawny', or wondering if she's maybe a juvenile -- far from it! at 15, joanne is very much considered a geriatric tiger; she's a grandma. she is, however, a sumatran tiger (panthera tigris sumatrae) -- sumatrans are the smallest extant subspecies of tiger, built more for the sweltering jungles of sumatra than the blistering cold of the amur river or the dense forests and mangrove swamps of south asia.

when you're used to seeing amur or amur-bengal hybrid ('generic') tigers on television or online, most of which are often overfed and overweight, a sumatran is going to look a bit weird, but joanne looks to be in wonderful shape -- look at those muscles flex and that coat shimmer when she moves! that's a healthy old lady for sure. props to joanne's keepers for taking such good care of her.

What’s your opinion on Eva Stratt? Idk if anyone has asked yet.

Love her! And I have complicated feelings about her. I think often there's this "either or" mentality, where she's either evil and heartless or she's done nothing wrong ever, and I feel like it's more complex than that and that's in part what makes her so great!

She's a very selfless character and above all, she loves humanity. She knows her job is to take on the burden of making the hard but necessary choices, and in a sense, she's putting her life on the line as much as the hail mary crew. If being on the hail mary would have given earth the best fighting chance, she would have been right up there with them, but she physically cannot and instead has to put her faith those that can. She's fully aware of the role she's had to take on and that people are going to see her as a villain, and she's accepted that role because that's what humanity needs to survive.

I also think it's absolutely horrifying what she had to do to Grace, it's very hard to watch the chase scene in the movie because it really does feel like he's being put down like a wild animal. And the idea of drugging someone and inducing amnesia so they can't even remember their own name is terrifying. I think taking away someone's consent and sense of self like that is one of the worst things you can do. There's this big sense of Wrongness to it even if it was the right decision.

But even feeling that way, it's impossible to hate her. She's desperate and she knows that billions of lives are at stake, and she believes in Grace and the mission. The choices she makes, she does so with efficiency but not without knowing the weight they carry. She doesn't have time to hum and haw and feel bad, but she isn't sacrificing grace on a whim, she does it because there is no other option.

To sum it up, I think she's a fun and complex character and I really like seeing all the analyses around her. She's got these very strict morals and knows exactly who she needs to be to save the world and it's someone that very few people are going to like and understand, but she's fine with that if it means she can save their lives. I loved Sandra Hüller's portrayal of her, she's such a fantastic actor <3 I think Stratt has this very quiet silliness to her that can get overlooked by having to be the big bad "dictator" (and cause Grace is a bit of an unreliable narrator) but I was really endeared to her more comedic bits. One of the characters ever to me.

it really is kind of interesting how attached people are to the idea of the improvised line and the genuine reaction in film. nearly every single famous moment or line has some sort of claim floating around that it wasn't in the script and was either made up on the spot by an actor or was sprung as a surprise on the actors to get their 'real' reaction. you know, sometimes people do come up with good lines in advance and write them down, and sometimes people can pretend to be have a convincing emotional response on screen

It's my cat's birthday (anniversary of me getting him) so I told him the story of his life while petting him real good

For your first two years (when you were small) you lived in a foster home with people who raised you into a very polite young man. Two is like you plus me, that's what two is.

Some people adopted you before me and they called you Timmy (which is a stupid name) and they returned your ass almost immediately because you were so annoying at that age.

I'm better than them though, I don't call you Timmy and I wore earplugs to bed for three years because you love to scream at bedtime. Earplugs are like when I roll over and go back to sleep even when you are yelling so so so loud.

I got you at a time in my life when I was really sick (being sick is like when I'm up late because I'm throwing up and you are a very handsome good boy who sits with me) and they had to put me asleep for a procedure. A procedure is like what happened to you when they put you asleep and took your balls away.

Now you've lived with me for five years. Five is like the number of toe beans on one of your feet. When I clip your nails five is when we're halfway done. But we're hopefully not even halfway done with how long we get to be together. I'm gonna have to figure out new ways to help you count.
