“The Rose surmounts the thorny cross, the whole resembling the sign of Venus in which the solar circle triumphs over the cross of matter. We may interpret the motto as saying that “spiritual knowledge gives solace to souls,” of whom bees are a venerable symbol.“ - Joscelyn Godwin, in Robert Fludd: Hermetic Philosopher of Two Worlds

"As long as we continue to ignore our divine side and the Divine Wisdom and highly specialized faculties and abilities we have, as long as we refuse to use them or exercise them, we will remain in all of our mental and worldly affairs, nothing more than creatures of the animal kingdom. Religions say we should put our faith in God, but as Rosicrucians, we say that we should put our faith in the Divine Consciousness, the Divine Wisdom and the Divine Powers that we all possess and which reside within each of us and remain more or less undeveloped in all human beings." H. Spencer Lewis
A small moment in time
It was just my birthday. I turned 43. It feels amazing. Aging is scary but also makes you more aware of time wasted and helps you value the here and now a little bit more. Middle age. Wow. At one point in time I didn’t think I’d make it this far, but here I am.

Stumbled across this gorgeous pink devotional emblem titled “Corona immortalis gloriae in Leopoldi I. virtutibus effigiata” (c. 1671), created by Maria Anna Sybilla Calina (a Latinized form associated with the naturalist/illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian and her artistic circle).
On the surface it looks like soft, dreamy sacred-heart imagery… but it’s actually political theology.
The central crowned heart represents Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, framed as a ruler whose inner virtues are divinely guided (note the all-seeing eye nestled inside the heart). The light rays pouring outward symbolize his virtues being “distributed” to loyal subjects, visualized as smaller hearts receiving his radiance.
Above him sits a sun-face and zodiac arc, implying cosmic order. This was a big flex in the 17th century: “The heavens literally support this guy’s rule.” Astrology, monarchy, and Catholic devotion were all tangled together.
The soft pink tinting is hand-applied and (intentionally or not) leans into the color of charity and divine love in Catholic art. The whole composition reads like a devotional mandala built on propaganda, piety, and cosmic legitimacy.
This era blurred:
alchemical symbolism
Catholic mysticism
astrological cosmology
imperial royal messaging
Little hearts below = obedient souls. Crown = sacred kingship. Eye = conscience illuminated by God. Sun + zodiac = cosmic endorsement.
1671: where imperial politics gets filtered through sacred-heart surrealism.
