Queerness in Cardcaptor Sakura

As an anime targeted to kids from the late 90s and beginning of the 2000s, it has been a precedent on queer representation on massive family friendly media. There are multiple characters that are canonically part of the LGBTQ+ community. Kids media is still widely heteronormative, other sexual orientations are treated as taboo and not appropriate for kids, which is why I find so captivating that a TV show from the early 2000s could be so inclusive in contrast of what we see in 2022.

Starting with the characters, Syaoran, Sakura’s love interest, is definitely in the queer spectrum. Initially he does not seem interested in Sakura, but rather in her crush at the time, Yukito. Syaoran felt drawn by Yukito’s moon energy, and it could be interpreted as him falling for Yukito’s true essences and spirit, without caring too much about his gender or physical appearance. Therefore, Syaoran can be defined as pansexual.

Sakura’s best friend Tomoyo shows a very clear romantic interest towards her friend. He constantly praises her and her beauty, she is Sakura's number one fan. Although in the anime Tomoyo’s feelings are not explicit, in the manga we get a confirmation of Tomoyo’s unrequited love for Sakura. Thus, Tomoyo is interpreted as a lesbian.

Lastly, the most memorable sub-plot of the whole series is the story of Yukito and Touya. We witness their progress on their relationship, from being best friends to slowly developing or realising their feelings for each other. Ultimately, the couple end up together, being the only queer couple that prospect on the series. In the case of Touya he can be seen as gay, as he never showed romantic interest in girls throughout the series, in fact he rejected those who approached him. Yukito’s case is similar to Touya, although he didn’t seem as unpleasant as Touya by women, he is also perceived as a gay man.

As a whole, Cardcaptor Sakura opened a door for queerness on kids show, allowing them to feel represented and accompanied through the characters. Many queer viewers, including myself, have a special place for the series of their hearts, is as one of the first shows that celebrated diversity and inclusion, educations about sexuality by normalizing sex same relations.

I watched the anime when it was on French TV, and a few years later on dailymotion, still in French and still heavily censored. Despite that I felt something wasn’t straight between Touya and Yukiti. When I watched it in Japanese I realised how much all the queer subtext had been toned down and I literally cried a lot because it was real it wasn’t just in my head.

Like, he's lived his whole life with a mother who had horrible mental illness, a father who was unstable and always angry, a brother who couldn't even hold down a job. He's had to keep secrets and lie and read between the lines just to survive.

And here's Shane. Shane who folds his clothes before sex. Shane who will always be happy with a cold ginger beer. Shane who has a stylist and an interior decorator because he likes things to look objectively nice.

Shane who answers "How many times can you cum in an hour?" completely literally. Shane who has no filter and comments on the bed being dirty within 0.2 seconds of cumming all over it. Shane who comes out to Ilya the moment he figures it out himself, and who tells him point blank that it's not just sex, because he never ever expects Ilya to read his mind.

Their relationship is far from simple, but it's probably one of the most predictable things in Ilya's world. Shane is a safe harbour throughout the years, even while the hurricane around Ilya only gets more and more destructive.

As a Colombian who's family is all the shades of the Madrigal family. I find it hilarious that people don't understand that they are light skin people of color. Literally my aunt is white as milk and her sister (my mom) from the same parents is the same shade as Mirabel. I'm light skin my half sister looks like Isabela. My other sister looks like Jenna Ortega. My brother looks native and is brown. My nephew and niece look like Dolores and Antonio. It's just how it is.
