KNIFE WIFE
“Life is a drunken beggar Holding out his hand to his own shadow.”
— Fernando Pessoa, A Little Larger Than the Entire Universe: Selected Poems
The air here smells familiar, and the wind sounds almost sad, like the low and distant howling of the dog you never had.
exciting news!!
so next month i’m making a major life change: i’m moving across the country to dedicate my time completely to art! i am beyond excited and nervous for this huge endeavor!!
as with most major changes though i need a little bit of help!~ i’ve planned out and budgeted everything for the move and i just need a little help saving up a little more for the trip and then some for a cushion in case anything disastrous or unexpected happens.
if you’d like to help me with this transition there’s a few ways to do so:
commission me: to help im going to be taking out a very limited number of commission slots!! My rates begin at $40/hr unless you’re seeking commercial work then it varies by project. Contact me via DMs or an Ask! Commission examples:
support me through my shop: storenvy
donate: https://ko-fi.com/A627LI1
reblog this post: every reblog helps immensely and any support is always greatly appreciated.
please consider helping me out anyway you can, literally anything and everything is appreciated so thank you!! i know we’re all going through rough times right now so every little bit helps but please don’t prioritize helping me over yourself or your needs 🧡
Rosewater =/= rose infusion or tea or essence.
Thank you!
Omg please know the difference! Yes thank you!
For the baby witches, and my tired mind who hasn’t used either methods before, would anyone mind elaborating on the difference between the two?
If not I’ll make a post tomorrow on it after some (clearly needed) research!
Rose tea is generally made without actual roses. You can get roses in teas, usually in places where the tea is made fresh and not bagged.
Rose infusion is using the oils of a rose.
Rose essence is the oil itself.
There is no “recipe”, you soak rose petals in water, generally until it becomes red or pink. The purpose is to use the oils in the petals to add the essence of the rose into magic, or to apply to the skin, as rose oil is said to help with skincare.
The main difference is:
Rose tea rarely has actual roses. It’s a brand name. Or a flavor.
Rose essence or rose infusions can have undiluted oils, as well as oils from other parts of the plant.
Mmh.. no not really, no. This may be fine things to call these items within your own practice, but there really do have their own specific definitions which are very different than these.
I just wrote this post today over at therestlesswitch.com that goes over these and many other herbal preparations. But i’ll touch on rose preparations specifically here.
Rose infusion: same as tea. Infusion just refers to the act of using a liquid to extract the constituents of a plant. So if you want to get specific, you could say rose petal hot water infusion. But really, rose infusion or any herbal infusion generally refers to a hot water infusion, like a tea.
Rose tea: literally just rose infusion. Rose petals/buds are steeped in hot water, like most other teas. Sure some brands may call a product ‘rose tea’ when it contains more than just roses. But in the herbal world, and really for accuracy’s sake, tea just refers to any water-based infusion or decoction that you drink. So rose tea just means a water-based infusion of roses. Rose essence: definitely not oil. It’s not even essential oil. Herbal and floral essences are made by doing a very light, usually fairly short cool-water infusion of the plant material and then preserving it using alcohol. These are energetic medicines, rather than physical/mundane/chemical medicine. Dosage is usually 1-3 drops.
Rosewater is a hydrosol. Hydrosols are byproduct of steam distillation, so rose hydrosol is the water vapour that is collected during the processing of rose essential oil (aka rose otto.) This is definitely not the same as a rose tea or infusion. Professionally made and bottled hydrosols are shelf-stable until they’re opened. But you can make your own at home using the instructions I linked to in the post on my website, just be sure to keep it refrigerated to extend it’s life!
Basically, none of these things involve any oil mentruums or solvents, and none of these refer to the actual volatile oils that are in the plant. The oils that are actually in the plant are extracted using either steam distillation (which produces in rose essential oil/rose otto) or they’re solvent extracted, (which produces rose absolute.)
My post refers specifically to “rose tea” that you find in stores. Actual rose tea would be tea made with rose petals, so thanks for clearing that up; you’re still most likely to get it in, like, a chinese tea place or something. I definitely messed up on the infusion, I’m not sure why I said those were oils. Only the essence would be an oil, if at all.
Rose essence. Essence of a rose. You don’t use cold water to get rose essence, that’s like putting rose petals in a bottle of water. You’d get an infusion. Whether you’re getting oil or not most likely depends on how it is done, but yes, rose essential oil IS a form of rose essence. Not too sure what else would be that, unless you’re going to say it’s all an infusion...which defeats the post’s purpose.
Rose water isn’t obtained from steam distillation, what? That’s certainly a way to do it, but that’s not the only way. The common way is to, surprise, use an infusion. I suppose the biggest difference is nobody calls it “an infusion”, it’s mostly just called “rose water”. The infusion is just one way to do it.
All your thing says is they are all infusions, but rose water is supposedly the steam from said infusion. Which isn’t the only way to get it, and is generally not worth the effort when most of the benefits come from the oil of the plant.
I suppose a better difference is how it’s used. Infusion is just how you get them, tea is drunk, rose essence is used in lotions, and rose water is used like a mask or in a bath tub.
Apparently tumblr isn’t letting me post this to therestlesswitch for some reason. so i’m putting it here on my ‘main’
Cool, that’s not what i’m referring to in my post. I’m talking about the definitions of herbal preparations, not how brands choose to label their products. though ‘tea’ really is the very loosest of terms that i’ve covered. the rest are quite solidly defined. I’m really curious about where you’re getting your information. did you read the post i wrote on my site that i linked? I’m not using these terms in any sort of colloquial use, it’s not about how they’re used, it’s about how they’re made…which is why they’re called preparations. The words define methods of preparation. These are distinct and specific processes/preparations and result is very different end products.
Hydrosols most certainly are a byproduct of steam distillation. infusion is very different…the method of preparation literally defines what the end product is…so you cant use infusion to get a hydrosol. herbal and floral essences most certainly are their own distinct preparation and are not hot-water infusions at all, and they aren’t oils, (essential/volatile or otherwise.) absolute and essential oil /are/ oils, and this is what is used in oil-based products..(or an infused oil, please read that first post i linked for the definitions) maybe you’re in a very different part of the world where these words aren’t translating properly or are used differently?? I’m using the terms are they are used in most western, and certainly north american traditional and clinical herbalism. these terms have been long defined. they’re not new or colloquial. Again, i’d be interested in knowing where you learned these things so i can be aware of any differences in definitions cross-culturally if that’s the case.

Change your point of view. Seldom does a person believe their intentions are destructive. Set aside the emotions that have driven you. Employ logic and a thoughtful nature. Know that the path of the fool goes in a thousand different well-lit directions. The path of brilliance is often the most dark, but it will lead you to enlightenment.
