Original Work
Hey guys! I appreciate everyone who said they were willing to read a few paragraphs of my original work I've been working on. Here's what I've got!
---------------------------------------
I know my husband, as much as he would probably hate to admit it. So I know that something is off about the way he’s flaunting his little mistress around so openly. Staring at the lurid pictures of his hand dangerously high on her bare thigh, her skirt barely enough to cover what it needs to, I try to decide if I care enough to figure it out.Â
My grandfather visibly startles when he comes into the kitchen. “Charlotte? What on earth are you doing here so early?”
I tap my nails on the kitchen table as I continue staring at the gossip rag in front of me. “Explain to me again how Alexander came to you and asked-no, begged-to marry me. In detail.”
“Why do you need to-” He cuts off with a strangled gasp as he steps close enough to see the ugly truth plastered across the front page. “Sweetheart.”Â
He sounds devastated, and maybe I should be more sympathetic, but something is off. “It doesn’t make sense. I ignored it at first, because I’m fucking selfish and I had the man I’ve wanted half of my life. But he never acted like a man who was so besotted with me that he would have come to you and begged to marry me.” I finally manage to drag my gaze from the paper to my grandfather’s face, which is paler than I’ve ever seen. “In fact, he acted a lot like an animal caught in a trap, ready to gnaw its own limb off to escape.” I flick my fingers at the paper. “He knows I’d never stand for him cheating, so this is him gnawing off that limb. Ruining his reputation in a manner that is sure to get me to file for divorce.”Â
“You can’t!” My grandfather blurts out quickly, before clamping his mouth shut.Â
“No?”
He closes his eyes. “No.” He drops down into the seat across from me, exhaustion lining his face. “I just wanted to do something nice for you sweetheart. You’ve refused every gesture I’ve offered since you came back into my life. I just wanted to have something to offer you.”Â
I sigh and reach out, clasping his hand in mine. I love this man, even if I’m entirely certain he’s about to infuriate me. “What did you do?”
