The depiction of religion in Strange Cases was inspired by how, during Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines, statues of saints would have wooden bodies carved from molave or narra, while their faces, hands, and feet were sculpted from fine elephant ivory.

I was raised Catholic, and grew up afraid of all the statues of religious figures I was surrounded by. There was a life-sized Jesus statue that I found to be particularly terrifying, it was of him carrying the cross, nearly naked, covered with blood and sweat, with tears streaming down his eyes. I could barely look at it, I had to close my eyes every time I’d pass by it.

Despite growing up with folk tales about all kinds of supernatural beings, that visceral fear I felt around those statues is what has stayed with me the most. With Strange Cases, I wanted to explore the horror that already exists within Catholicism.
