In the past few years, the Organization for Transformative Works (the nonprofit behind the Archive of Our Own, Fanlore, Transformative Works and Cultures and other projects) and its Board of Directors have had their fair share of successes—and some issues along the way, too. It’s OTW elections season now, and several candidates are running who have concerns about the organization’s sustainability and environment. Here are some key points:
The OTW needs a better, stabler structure for financial administration. We have no prospective budget, and all our finances depend on one treasurer. (Read more about this in Katarina Harju’s manifesto.)
We need transparency and communication between the Board and the rest of the organization, to end the current culture where all relevant discussions only happen behind closed doors. (Read more about this in Aline Carrão’s manifesto.)
We have to give our overworked volunteers the resources they need to do the work they signed up for. No more bills not paid on time; no more taking months to acknowledge a proposal or request. (Read more about this in Matty Bowers’s manifesto.)
The OTW needs a vision aligned with our projects’ goals, and transparent policy decisions that reflect our volunteers’ concerns. Our projects—including the AO3—and the volunteers who work on them often suffer due to lack of support from the Board. (Read more about this in Lady Oscar’s manifesto.)
We need a Board that understands and respects each project’s different goals instead of imposing increasingly complex bureaucracy and hoops for committees to jump through. More cooperation and trust would benefit everyone. (Read more about this in Alex Tischer’s manifesto.)
In order to face these issues, it’s crucial that we have a representative Board of Directors committed to make changes to the status quo. It’s time for the OTW’s annual elections for the Board of Directors, and we need your vote. If you donated US$10 or more within the past year and chose to become an OTW member (or do so before September 30, 2015), you have the right to a vote in our November 6–9 elections.
We need your help to change the OTW for the better. If you have the right to vote, come November 6, please step up and make your vote count.
