Every once in a while a post comes around that reminds me of how important these books were to wee me, and I have to reblog it so that other people can find this very important series.
What I absolutely love about this book is how the princess learns all these random things when she’s bored being a princess and then she uses every one of those skills while she works for the dragon. Her skill at making dessert got her the job.
She reads latin - great for organising old texts!
She fences - well, sometimes the princes won’t go away anyway
She cooks - even dragons hold banquets, ya know.
And then. And then. at the end she becomes a queen and all those skills she wasn’t supposed to learn help her be a good queen.
Bonus: the dragon she goes to live with, Kazul, is also female. Through various events in the book, Kazul eventually becomes King of the Dragons (yes, you read that right–in dragon culture, the titles of King and Queen are not tied to gender.
I cannot TELL YOU how much little Stele wanted to run away and become a dragon’s princess.

The moral of the story is: always take time to cry for a few hours before making important decisions.
So I’m more or less being facetious here, but this is actually a thing.
Hamlet is genre savvy. Hamlet knows how Tragedies work, and he’s not going to rush in and get stabby without making absolutely certain he’s got all the facts.
Except once he thinks he has all the facts – once he’s certain that it really is the ghost of his father and Claudius really did kill him, he rushes in and stabs the wrong guy, which starts a domino line of deaths and gets Laertes embroiled in his own revenge tragedy and ultimately results in the deaths of nearly every character other than Horatio.
That’s the irony and the tragedy of the story. Hamlet knows his tropes and actively tries to avoid them, and the tropes get him anyway. It’s inevitable, the tropes are hungry.

i met a scholar once who said that tragedies aren’t about a silly “flaw” or anything, it’s about having a hero who’s just in the wrong goddamn story
if hamlet swapped places with othello he wouldn’t be duped by any of iago’s shit, he’d sit down & have a good think & actually examine the facts before taking action. meanwhile in denmark, othello would have killed claudius before act 2 could even start. but instead nope, they’re both in situations where their greatest strengths are totally useless and now we’ve got all these bodies to bury.

diy body butter 💗
-INGREDIENTS
-½ cup shea butter or *mango butter
-½ cup cocoa butter
-½ cup coconut oil
-½ cup light oil (almond,jojoba,argan,olive oil etc.)
- optional but fragrance or essential oil
*you can use just mango butter in place of both the cocoa & shea butter if you’re allergic or something
INSTRUCTIONS
-combine all ingredients (except the fragrance oil) in a heat-proof bowl
-place the bowl in a double boiler (pot filled with water) and bring the water to medium heat. stir until melted.
-remove the bowl from the heat, and put it into the fridge (or freezer if you’re impatient)
-take it out when the oil is somewhat hardened,but still kinda soft (if you’re using fragrance,add it now)
-use a hand mixer and beat until fluffy, then put it into the fridge for about 10 minutes
-store it in a plastic or jar container, and keep it in a cool place so it doesn’t melt.

hey girl! thank you, i’m glad you like it! 😘 tbh we’re kind of in the same boat, moving out is right around the corner for me, and some things i’ve been taught is that:
*nobody really has their shit together at 18. like at 18 ur not gonna have a revelation on how everything works. like… ur 18. the world is ur fuckin oyster. nothing is wrong with not moving out EXACTLY at 18. there’s no shame in staying home and saving up.
*find a job girl! you need a job before anything. make a resume, (here’s some tips on how to make one!) and have somebody look over it like a parent or somebody else with a job at least. applying for a job in person tends to be better than applying online, in my experience.
*also, when it comes to jobs, make an entirely separate email address and use that email specifically for work purposes. don’t apply to a job with an email like “[email protected]” or some shit like that. keep it simple. just make one like [email protected].
*here’s a guide for what to wear to different types of job interviews.
*if you don’t know how to cook, learn now! you won’t be able to eat out every single day.
*moving out means spending more money obviously, and if you don’t know how to budget, you should learn now! one rule to follow is the “50 30 20″ rule. use 50% of ur paycheck for necessities, (rent,utilities,gas,food,etc.) 30% for “lifestyle spending” (entertainment,eating out,clothing,etc.) and put the last 20% into savings.
*speaking of savings, open a savings if you don’t have one, and put money into it regularly, and don’t take money out of it unless absolutely necessary.
*credit cards are tricky and can be confusing. make sure you get familiar with the idea of credit (look here!) before getting a credit card, and when you do get one, always make your payments on time.
there’s a blog i follow called “how to grow the fuck up and act like an adult” that has so many tips and in depth guides on moving out and just growing up in general, i would check them out, they could probably give you more advice than i could! i hope i helped somewhat 😚

SIDENOTE HERE BECAUSE HOLY SHIT. They did an experiment where these guys wore masks and some of them fucked with crows. Pretty soon the crows recognized the masks = douchebag. But the nice guys with masks they left alone. THEN, OH WE’RE NOT DONE, NO SIR crows that WEREN’T EVEN IN THE EXPERIMENT AND NEVER SAW THE MASK BEFORE knew about mask-dudes and attacked them on sight. THEY PASSED ON THE FUCKING INFORMATION TO THEIR CROW BUDDIES.
They remember places where crows were killed by farmers and change their migration patterns.

A colleague of my dad’s lives next to a lake, and looked out the window one morning to see a duck trapped in the ice. A crow swooped down. “Oh hell,” she thought, expecting carnage, because crows are opportunists. But the crow chipped at the ice with its beak until the duck was free.
Idk of this counts but a few crows saved me from a magpie swooping attack once ,they’re bros who can tell when magpies are being unreasonable and need to chill
I love crows so damn much. When I was fifteen, I hit a pretty serious bout of depression, to the point I was in my room for months. Well, a family of crows made a nest in a tree outside my window. There were two parents and two chicks. One chick was healthy and strong. One was weak, and had a caw like something being strained. It sounded more like a rooster crowing and so my parents jokingly named him ‘Buck’.Well… months passed and Buck’s sibling was taught to fly. His parents focused on the sibling because the sibling was strong. The father stayed behind to try and teach Buck, but I saw him try to fly, fail, and crash to the floor. His father helped him back up into the tree.
Every day, I would watch Buck from my window until one day I opened it and started talking to him. He was small and gangly and he couldn’t caw right. His feathers were all over the place and I felt a kinship. So I made a deal with him. I told him that if he could do it, if he could fly, then I could find the strength to get up. Well… near the end of the season, after talking with him every day, I finally saw him get out of the nest. He went to the edge of his branch, braced himself, and jumped… and just before he hit the ground, he soared back up into the sky. I cheered harder than I ever had before.
That winter, Buck left the area. I was crestfallen. I felt like I’d lost a friend. But I was so damn proud of him.
Cut to the next spring? I’m walking up the driveway one day when suddenly I hear a sound… a broken caw. I look up, and Buck is sitting in a tree above my head. He stared at me and puffed his feathers, then hopped down in front of me and cawed again. I was so damn thrilled, and I told him how proud I was of him. He ruffled his feathers and then soared off into his old tree.
That summer? I heard two broken caws. One from Buck… and one from his chick.
Cut to ten years later? We have a family of crows who all have a very distinct caw and they come here and spend every spring, summer, and fall on our property. Buck still greets me every spring.

Don’t forget the Russian Crow SLEDDING DOWN A ROOF not once, but twice.
this one morning i kept hearing really loud caws, i remember it was like 5am, LIKE REALLY LOUD AND ANNOYING AND AGGRESSIVE, so loud that i could hear it through a closed window, and i eventually went outside to check it out. there was a crow on my front lawn, it had an injury on its head and couldn’t fly and there were two other crows circling right above it, and they were cawing like mad.
i tried to get close and take a better look and one of them dived super low and tried to attack me. so i went back in the house and chopped some sliced raw meat and tossed it at him from a distance.
a few more times later, very soon after, they could tell i was trying to help, and did not attack me. i was “allowed” to walk up close and pick him up, he couldn’t drink water properly so i had to dip my finger in a bowl and stick it in his mouth.
i did this few times a day and it went on for about a week before he disappeared, i thought he recovered and left, but he came back the next day and lands on me, and i see him around the block quite often, and he would come sit on my shoulder for a few minutes and then fly away again. i feel like i’ve adopted a son.
