It felt fitting for my last fanart of 2022 to honor one of the absolute highlights of my year, drawing endpapers for the RWRB Collector’s Edition. This scene was such a beautiful, fitting conclusion to their story, and I WEPT when I read it. I will never not feel overwhelmed with gratitude when I think of this book and its impact on my life, and I can only imagine what loveliness awaits us in 2023 when the movie is released.

You’re always right

I was thinking about the scene where Laurent is yelling, frustratedly, at Damen about how he’s always right, and how as usual there’s a double meaning there. Laurent doesn’t just mean that Damen’s always correct (he isn’t), Laurent means that morally he always picks the right course, something which Laurent himself does not do. 

Pacat mentions in this interview that it’s quite clear from the text that it’s Damen’s integrity that Laurent is the most attracted to, but for me what is heartwrenching about that is the realisation that some of the “bad” moral choices that Laurent hated himself for were ones that his uncle manipulated him into. Obviously the biggest one is becoming involved in an incestuous relationship with him, that Laurent is still coming to realise he was groomed into and he needs to stop blaming himself for, but the other major one was letting his uncle sideline him in his own kingdom, while pretending he was just doing what a regent should do - take care of things until the king was old enough to be crowned. Laurent was grieving and, being a shy, retiring 13yo, was not the natural leader Damen seems to have been, even by that age. 

To sideline him from his crown, Damen’s brother had needed his enemy to supply him with a plan and a small army. Laurent feels, I think, throughout a lot of this series, quite reduced by the fact that his uncle hadn’t needed any of that to sideline him. Damen isn’t wrong when he thinks to himself that princes don’t need protecting, they need seasoning: something that Laurent was not, and could have benefitted from.

This scene was written so beautifully, I couldn’t follow through on my original plan to release art in order. Two things stuck out to me in the way Rainbow wrote this milestone of intimacy for Simon and Baz: 1) The way Baz uses verbal cues to keep Simon present and in the moment (when earlier, he’d been succumbing to panic attacks any time they were about to be physically intimate), and 2) the way this love scene was as passionate and loving as any other love scene regardless of their still being dressed (which pleased me greatly as a gray-ace person). I just thought it was so mindfully executed given the characters and the audience, and I hope those of you who read it agree.
