so i played GRIS this month and since i am still highly obsessed with SU with no sign of stopping, i imagined a mash between these two things. i interpreted the game like building yourself back up from sth awful, and the shape and color language reminded me of Steven Universe, so i wanted to think about that a little in art form. not to mention the game is gorgeous and i wanted to try my hand at using that style for SU fanart. the style evolved little by little as i kept drawing these :3

Its been NINE YEARS and i still dont think anyone knows exactly why teen titans was cancelled

Same reason Young Justice and Green Lantern The Animated Series were canceled: Girls liked it. Bruce Timm finally up an’ said it out loud in an interview a while back when he was asked why in the hell GL:TAS had been canceled when it was doing so well on every front; DC’s animation department has institutionally decided that feee-males don’t/can’t/shouldn’t like superheroes, so even if a show is drawing in great viewership numbers and has great toy sales, once they find out that it’s popular with women and girls, they pull the plug on it. Cartoon Network loved Teen Titans— two million viewers for new episodes will do that— and wanted a Season Six, and the production staff was already in the planning stages for it; they were going to have a big arc about Terra and why she was Living Normal, and do a lot more with the extended Titans team members.

To elaborate on this point a bit, the reason this happens is that modern television merchandising aims for total market segregation.

In a nutshell, it’s much more efficient to sell things to people if you can divide them up into tightly defined subcategories that have no interests in common; that way, you never risk accidentally competing with yourself.

This is why children’s toys (and toy sales channels) are actually much more strongly gendered these days than they were forty, thirty, even twenty years ago: one of the basic market segregation splits they’ve decided to use is “boys versus girls”.

Ever wonder why you see Avengers t-shirts that leave Black Widow out of the group shot, or Guardians of the Galaxy action figure lines with no Gamora? That’s market segregation in action.

The upshot is that shows with crossover appeal can actually be cancelled for being too popular with girls; they’re viewed as “stealing” the female market from the specifically girl-targeted media that rightfully “owns” it.

This is the sort of thing folks are talking about when they say gender roles are socially constructed, by the way. The gender split in media merchandising? It’s not just artificial, it’s deliberately imposed as a top-down marketing strategy. When folks try to justify it by saying “this is the ways it’s always been” or “this is just what the market wants”, they’re lying through their teeth - this is, in fact, the merchandisers dictating to the market what it wants in order to sell stuff more efficiently.

(Interestingly, the reverse isn’t always true: if a specifically girl-targeted show unexpectedly becomes popular with boys, sometimes rather than being cancelled, its merchandising will shift to court the male collector’s market. TV execs are so sexist, even their sexism is sexist.)

It gets worse.

Paul Dini, a writer/producer said this on a podcast: “ That’s the thing, you know I hate being Mr. Sour Grapes here, but I’ll just lay it on the line: that’s the thing that got us cancelled on Tower Prep, honest-to-God was, it’s like, ‘we need boys, but we need girls right there, right one step behind the boys’—this is the network talking—’one step behind the boys, not as smart as the boys, not as interesting as boys, but right there.’”

Cartoon network and Warner brothers deliberately made the conscious decision to dumb down their female characters because they want to push female viewers away. In fact, Tower Prep was cancelled because it had too many female viewers because the writers made too many well written female characters.

So shitty representation of girls isn’t something that just happens. It’s the result of deliberate planning just so the execs can make more money.

And it’s not just cartoon network. I mean, why do you think Nick fucked over Korra so badly? Remember them telling Bryke they didn’t want a female Avatar? Why do you think there are no Korra figurines or action figures?

Internius (SUF Fanfic) Pt.4

Note: I have deleted the previous Pt.4 as I didn’t like the direction I was taking the fanfic in. This is the new version, sorry for any confusion or inconvenience.

“I know you’re Pink Diamond,” Steven murmured while starting intently with a mixture of disgust and sadness into his mother’s eyes.

Rose slowly removed her hand from Steven’s head not sure what to say next. She felt many mixed feelings yet her face was like a blank slate.

“How do you know?” Rose wondered as she was trying to regain her composure.

“Pearl showed me,” Steven remarked. A wave of remorse swept over Rose and was now completely emotionally broken on the inside. She stood up trying to remove herself from Steven.

Rose now coming to terms with this new information, “But I told Pearl to not say anythi-”

“I know you did; I know you tried to keep the truth away from everyone, especially me,” Steven glowered. “I know you didn’t want me to see certain places like your palanquin or know about Bismuth and why you bubbled her. Why couldn’t you at least tell Pearl or Garnet?” Steven accused.

“I couldn’t let them know!” Rose exclaimed.

“You could’ve tried! You fought a war for them and you let so many gems be shattered because of it!” Steven retorted.

“You spent time with Pearl, you know how fragile she can be. I just couldn’t let anyone know what happened,” Rose pointed out, “And look, I know I let countless gems be shattered in my name. I just wanted to protect the Earth and I didn’t see any other way to stop the colony from being completed,” Rose confided in Steven.

“That’s your excuse for starting a war?!” Steven snapped, “I can’t believe this,” Steven now shaking head “I guess shattering doesn’t mean anything to a Diamond, but I guess I’m not any better,” Steven scoffed

“What do you mean ‘not any better’?” Rose questioned, fearing the answer.

Internius (SUF Fanfic) Pt. 3

“Steven?” Rose gasped.

Steven stared into his mother’s eyes and noticed tears welling up. Steven gave the slightest of nods. Immediately, Rose collapsed to her knees and embraced Steven with a hug. Steven didn’t know what to feel as he was trapped in his mother arms. The shock on Steven’s face was apparent and he could feel a few tears starting to well up in his own eyes now.

Was he in the room again? How did he even get in the room? These thoughts raced through Steven’s head as his mother gently released him.

“Look at you Steven. How beautiful you are, you look so much like Greg,” Rose said as she placed her hand on Steven’s cheek.

“I even see you’re wearing one of his old shirts. How is he?” Rose questioned.

“He’s great and everyone else is doing amazing,” Steven assured Rose. Steven began to wonder if this was really Rose.

“I have so many questions!” Rose blurted out, “How did you even get here? And oh, that’s right you can age, can’t you?,” Rose began to run her hands through Steven’s hair,” How old are you? I want to know everything! I’ve been here for a little while so I don’t really kno-“

“Mom… I know.” Steven stared directly into Roses’s eyes and placed his hand on top of hers. “I know everything.”

“Know what Steven?” Rose wondered. A few seconds passed by before Steven could muster the will to speak.

“I know you’re Pink Diamond,” Steven murmured while now starting intently with a mixture of loathing and sadness into his mother’s eyes.

Internius (SUF Fanfic) Pt. 2

“Hello, well aren’t you adorable! Here let me help you up,” the woman said in the sweetest tone.

Steven was surprised to hear another voice as he thought he was alone. Steven recognized the voice of the woman immediately but was hesitant to turn around. He was in shock and wasn’t sure if his mind was playing tricks on him. Steven slowly turned around and looked up to see that he was face to face with his mom, Rose Quartz, leaning over him. The world seemed to stop for Steven. The last time he was face to face with his mom was in the room and that didn’t end so well.

Rose was smiling down at Steven, offering her hand to help him when she noticed his shirt. She only knew one person that wore a black shirt with a yellow star and that was Greg. Was he a fan of Greg’s music? Come to think of it, he looks very much like Greg. She thought.

Steven stared at her hand, hesitant to grab it. He was unable to get any words out. He looked up at her again and was only able to whisper out, “Mom?”

Immediately her eyes widened as she stood back up straight and withdrew her hand. Struggling to put any words together, “Are you- No it’s- How did…” She paused for a second to collect her thoughts, “Steven?” Rose gasped.

Internius (SUF Fanfic) Pt.1

“I’m a monster!”

That’s the last thing Steven remembered saying before blacking out. Drifting away into unconsciousness, Steven heard the sound of his clothes ripping as what felt like his entire body stretch out into infinity. He felt the force of a large weight push his body down into the ground. However, he remembered nothing after that.

Suddenly, Steven woke up on the beach in front of the temple laying in the sand and opened his eyes to a completely pink sky. He sat up trying to figure out what time of day it was, but there was no sun in sight and he couldn’t figure out how long he was passed out for. He noticed that something was odd, besides the bright pink sky, but couldn’t quite put his finger on it. Until he realized that his house was missing!

“What- Where did…” Steven muttered to himself trying to comprehend where he was and how he got there. Memories of his meltdown quickly rushed back into his head. Memories of himself on his knees admitting to everyone about how much of a fraud he felt like.

“Connie! Dad! Pearl! Garnet! Amethyst!” Steven yelled the hardest he could but there was no one anywhere near him as far as he could tell. He stared at his palms and realized he was no longer glowing pink. Instinctually, Steven placed his hand over his gem and to his surprise felt nothing. In shock, he raised his shirt to find that his gem was missing. In his confusion, Steven didn’t notice that someone was approaching him from behind until a shadow of a large person cast over him.
