Historical context is of course very useful for important things like Politics and Science and everything, but will also open your eyes to things like, uh... the way the clothing/textile/crafting industries try to use the word "natural" as an excuse to sell shoddy and bad quality goods and make you think that's normal.

God knows there are worse things going on in the world, but it really pisses me off when I see companies advertising "Real Shell/Pearl buttons!" like that's supposed to be some upscale selling point, and the buttons in question are the thinnest, roughest, most crudely-made buttons in existence... 🙄😒 "But they're made from Natural Materials! You can't expect Natural Materials to look refined and consistent like synthetic ones!" They are lying to you. THEY ARE LYING TO YOU! And I know this because I've seen "real shell buttons" from 100 or even 50 years ago. And most of them are sturdy and smoothly polished, of a consistent thickness, and sometimes even finely carved. The buttons on nice men's dress shirts? Those are the cheap, plastic IMITATIONS of what people expected actual mother-of-pearl buttons to look like! "Natural" isn't an excuse! Your product is cheap and badly and lazily made! And I'm so sick of this, because I see it EVERYWHERE. "Linen-look" has become shorthand for "coarsely woven fabric with visible slubs" and that drives me CRAZY because do you KNOW what kinds of linen I have seen??? Antique linen so light and fine and smooth you can't even SEE the weave unless you magnify it!!! A fragment of a linen damask tablecloth so smooth and glossy, it looks like SILK? 😭 (On that note, "dupioni silk" is so roughly woven that it would have been considered hardly fit to sell a century ago) "This fabric is woven of Natural Materials, so imperfections will be inevitable!" 🙃 No! 😀 You just made it cheaply and sloppily, and that was your choice! 😊

I just read that some authors avoid replying to comments because it can "infiltrate" or “ruin” their stats or whatever, or it makes them look like they’re inflating their comment count by themselves. But for me? That’s not what it’s about. Not even close.

When I reply to a comment, it’s not for numbers or algorithm games, it’s because someone took their precious time to leave words for me. For my writing. You’re giving me a piece of your time, your brain, your feelings. That means everything to me.  So I want to take the time to say:

I saw your comment. I read it. It meant something. And I’m so, so grateful.

You made me smile. Or cry. Or laugh out loud at 4am because I decided to check my inbox for some reason. You reminded me why I write in the first place.

It could be a string of heart emojis. It could be a keyboard smash. It could be an essay. Either way, I want you to know that I genuinely appreciate it. Whatever it is. That I don’t take it for granted. And neither do others.

Your words matter. Your kindness matters. And I want you to know that it reached us.

Every now and again I get kinda ... overwhelmed by things. At the moment I'm struggling to write my fics, to reply to reviews and even to edit. I'm frozen.

It's like I'm in the ocean and i can see a wave coming and instead of doing something about it I'm treading water and waiting for it to smash down on me - even though i know waiting will only make it bigger.

If anyone wants to share pictures of their Rooks or tell me about them, please do! I could use the distraction until this feeling passes.

I'm sorry to hear you are struggling. I definitely understand that feeling. I've been sitting in something similar for quite a while myself. If it helps, I can babble a little about my Rook. Large amounts of aimless chatter and a few pictures under the cut.

This is my main Rook, Bea de Riva. If I ever manage to write a DA fic, she will most likely be the Rook who features in it. Bea is short for Bambi, which evolved from the word "bambina," which means "little girl" in Italian, so kinda Antivan, maybe? When she was first taken in by the Crows, she refused to speak to even give them her name, so they just started calling her Bambina, which evolved into Bambi. She hated that enough to eventually try and correct them, but the damage was done, and the most she could do was convince them to call her "Bea" instead. Teia still calls her Bambi, but Teia is the ONLY one allowed to call her that.

The circumstances around Bea joining the Crows weren't ideal, and she actually has something of a grudge against the First Talon, Caterina, as she was more or less responsible for the death of Bea's family. Bea would probably be dead, too, but Viago took pity on her. She wants to have a grudge against Lucanis and Illario as well by extension, though they were not involved in the death of her family since they were too young at the time. Lucanis is a cinnamon roll, though, so she isn't able to stay mad at him. Especially since logically, she knows he wasn't involved in killing her family. Illario is on thin ice, though, because she finds his reputation as a flirt a little annoying. 😆

Bea's magic didn't manifest until she had already been training with the Crows for awhile, but she is very proud of it, even if it seems to stress Viago out. And maybe ESPECIALLY because it seems to stress Viago out. Despite the rocky start with the Crows and her hesitation towards the Dellamorte's, Bea loves Viago and considers him her family now. And Teia, of course. Everyone loves Teia.

Bea is fascinated by Spite and doesn't think of him as a demon, as her parents taught her that spirits are reflections of people's perceptions of them. She thinks it is stupid that nobody wants to try talking to Spite, and that they are creating more problems by insisting Spite doesn't want to talk and calling him a problem. She thinks of that as a self-fulfilling prophecy. As soon as she learns that Emmrich can hear Spite whenever he is around Lucanis she begs Emmrich to teach her how to be more in tune with spirits so that she can also hear Spite whenever she is around Lucanis.

Aaaaaaaand that's probably enough babbling. 😅

Guess who has a depressing new headcanon that absolutely needs to be in a fic if it isn't alreadyyyyy? Spoilers for Lucanis's romance, I guess? Kinda? Mild spoilers? Idk. I'm not used to this. I'm used to being a lurker.

So, Lucanis says so many times for Rook not to make promises they don't know if they can keep. I have decided that the reason for this is that when he was growing up, knowing his parents were assassins, he was afraid of them dying, so his mom always comforted him by promising him that she and his dad weren't going anywhere and would always be there for him, only for her and his dad to be murdered (yes, murdered, not assassinated. It sounds like they were killed for the gain of another house, not because a client paid them to. Fight me.)

Because of this, Lucanis hates when people make him promises for stuff like that because he is afraid of it not being kept, like with his mom and dad. Which makes the scene where Rook promises they aren't going anywhere, and he tells them he will hold them to that even more sweet and sad and delicious.

I ALSO headcanon that as soon as my Rook hears that Emmrich can hear Spite whenever he is around Lucanis, she pulls Emmrich aside to ask if he can teach her to be tuned in so she can also always hear Spite. That way, she can converse with Lucanis and Spite at the same time. 💝 Need to read or write a fic about that.
