Why Ghouls can drink Coffee
I’ve wonder for a while why ghouls can drink coffee. My answer is the origin. Coffee comes from Ethiopia which coincidentally is the birth place of homo sapiens or modern humans. I thought the answer was symbolic the only food ghouls can consume come from the birthplace of their prey. This led me to ask more questions which gave me a theory on the origin of ghouls and the evolution humans in the TG universe. To be clear this is all speculation, if it comes off like I’m stating facts like I proved my points I apologize. I just don’t want to use I think, believe, hypothesize theorize so much that it’s repetitive.
There is a theory that modern humans caused the extinction of the Neanderthals through warfare and an even darker one through cannibalism This mirrors the relationship between ghouls and humans in the TG world. Is the destiny of ghouls to wipe out the humans? Is the core of humans fear of ghouls, collective guilt what they did to the Neanderthals will be done to them? The cannibalism theory though holds little weight due to lack of evidence. But in the TG world we have Rc cells. Early humans all had Rc cells because it helped with their evolution. The early humans in Ethiopia figured out cannibalism made them stronger and smarter for some reason. Now we know it’s because they accumulated more Rc cells in their bodies. They cannibalized each other so much it birthed modern humans. When they started to expand they targeted their less advanced cousin which led to their extinction. Eventually humans would evolve into ghouls.
Rc cells having a role in human evolution would explain why humans have them. They give humans Olympic level strength through training or birth. Ghoul investigators look like super sentai when they fight.
There are a lot of hints that in the manga that ghouls are evolved humans. For one humans and ghouls have Rc cells and the only difference between them is how much of it. Human and ghouls can produce children together but the problem is getting the right nutrients to the child. In recent chapters humans have started turning into ghouls.
There is even that quote from the 24th residents about how they consider themselves human. This could be just demonstrating a different perspective. But Nagaraja was a Washuu ghoul a clan of ghouls who have been suppressing the truth about their own kind.
Eventually humans had to stop eating each other. Their evolving morality forbade it and for practical reasons. At certain point Rc cells became a burden. It caused madness and created ROS.
Most humans stopped eating each other preventing ROS. Unfortunately some humans could not make the transition. I believe Ghoul clans like the Washuu were originally human ones that wouldn’t stop cannibalizing because it strengthened their blood. This isolated them which in turn led to consanguineous marriages which mutated their Rc cells more. These mutations birthed kagune. But there came a serious drawback. As humans got smarter so did the Rc cells. Rc cells started rewiring these humans so they could only eat food that had Rc cells so they were stuck in a vicious cycle. Their morality advanced to the point where they wanted to stop but now couldn’t.
But what are Rc cells? They are the forbidden fruit. The Stoned Ape Theory suggests that human brains became more complex through the intake of mushrooms which are psychoactive. This theory led to the idea that mushrooms are really the Forbidden Fruit. I think the manga is showing that Rc cells are parasitic fungus like entities. When Rc cells over secrete they look like fungus. Also there was the mention early on of Ophiocordyceps which is a parasitic fungus that infects caterpillars. Rc cells started out as plant like life that humans ate which helped them evolve.
Why do Rc cells exist only in humans and ghouls? I think there a couple of reasons. Because of Human brains and ability to adapt. Rc cells connection to the human brain made both more intelligent. Kagune are determined by Rc quality and imagination. Nishio also mentioned that Rc cells are proliferating so humans were able to adapt to that better than other organisms.
When homo sapiens globally expanded they wiped out animal species an example are woolly mammoths. Maybe in the TG universe there were other animals that had RC cells but they were hunted into extinction.
Rc walls and detachments are proof that Rc cells have some form of sentient. The stronger the ghoul the more complicated these detachments become. Kagune themselves can create eyeballs and are capable of speech. I think these are the Rc cells peering out into the world and communicating. And with the emergence of Dragon we have a structure capable of birthing humanoid kagune monsters.
So finally why can ghouls drink coffee, the caffeine. Caffeine is a mild psychoactive drug that generally improves reaction time, wakefulness, concentration, and motor coordination. All useful when it came down to hunting, fighting and killing other humans for Rc cells.
This is all probably wrong but it’s fun to speculate
