Working on my new (old) album - Fragments in the Basement of My Mind aka FITBOMM - has taken me back to places and feelings, thoughts and sounds. Familiar paper and strokes of pen journaled straight from my mind and turmoil within - The Summer of 2003 was a special one for me. Without the growth and reflection that I had the freedom to explore while on one of my trips back home to Belgium, I would never have had the opportunity to step outside of my mind and body to really observe, listen and understand myself + make sense of the world and chaos around me. Poetry about love and obsession and thoughts on society, politics, addiction and death all make for a profound experience as I flip through these pages of intimate musings - some of which I eventually translated and expressed into song. My next few posts will feature some pages from this book - I have many others but will focus on this one for now. The first song I can remember writing and singing was when I was 11, and shortly after that I began documenting more and more on a tape recorder gifted to me by mom @pazgetalkin !Over the next 25 years, I moved around a lot, tech changed and I taught myself how to play a variety of instruments. I’ve lost count of how many songs I have. The worst is losing a lot of the original files moving from computer to computer, crashing hard drives and unable to pull my own originals from old iPods because they’re “protected” even though they are my creations - makes mixing any files I was able to save nearly impossible. I’ve attempted to reconstruct, but I often just end up writing a whole new song to add to the pile of the unfinished and unrefined. I struggle with the idea of perfection but I’m considering releasing an album featuring these raw and rough morsels of tunes. I’m kinda tired of the polished & predictable anyways. We aren’t robots so why should music, something so personal and emotional, be so perfect when we are so far from perfect ourselves? There’s a human, not a god, behind these sounds. I’ve always worked on the fly, love a good improvised jam and really love the quality of sound I get from a simple voice memo on my phone. So I’m working on my next (old) thing: Fragments in the Basement of My Mind, aka FITBOMM. I need you to hear where I was and where I came from, before I share where I am now and where I’m going.
