Caught up to Critical Hit episode...uh... I finished Riders Part 3 (post Autumn King, pre Winter Queen). Nope, no sodding clue what number that is, the episodes kinda blur into a steaming line of plotplotplotBATTLEOVERSEVERALEPISODESplotplotplot. Not a criticism but yeah, I can tell you when something happened in relation to other events, not other episodes. I will come out and say it now - WHERE IS THE FIC THEY GROANED ABOUT? I just... It seems so obscure (CH, I mean) that it wouldn't warrant the audience or fandom to generate such mind bending fics that even Brian is displeased, and he's been pretty cool with the body horror seen so far. I just...my morbid curiosity has been perked up by this. I find no art (beyond the dear Miss Very Very), no fic, just... Outside of the MS forums, CH doesn't seem to exist, at least not from my perception...

Mr. Bobinsky is wearing the Russian Hero Medal for Service at the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster on April 26, 1986. Which reads on the front âParticipant in the clean-up campaignâ The â4A3Câ indicates âChernobilskaya Nuclear Power Plant.â This medal is unique as it is the only medal in the world awarded for participation in a nuclear clean up. That might explain his skin complexion and odd behavior.
Here's my stance on these "Intiatives"
Due to the success of the Avengers and a more open geek/nerd community thanks to the internet, certain things have come to light in terms of sexism and portrayal of women in comics.Â
Iâm aware that some women do feel that thereâs a difference between sexy and ridiculous double-D cheesecake and would obviously feel uncomfortable walking into a comic store in the early to mid-90s (or even now) with Vampirella, Lady Death & various Image heroines in extremely sexual poses. The thing is, the comic industry used to cater towards young males and it still does with some publishers.
Imagine not too long ago, young artists and writers used to thrive off these nerds going through puberty without trying to steal stacks of porn off the racks (streaming free porn wasnât in the cards back in the day). This was their version of legally selling soft-core porn to minors. NOT all publishers and artists did this, but it did inspire an entire generation of artists to use cheesecake.
So fast forward now, some of these artists still make a living off of the pubescent nerds or their âbread and butterâ. The sales donât lie, sex generally does sell and it sells well and companies usually tend to market towards the lowest common denominator.Â
As for female comic readers (specifically the super hero variety), theyâre obviously not the key demographic, but they are a growing demographic thanks to the Avengerâs movie and the growing acceptance of fandom thanks to the internet and social sites such as Tumblr. Itâs awkward to see all this blantant fan service of all the female super heroines, but theyâre forgetting theyâre not the key demo here and that these publishers will slowly adapt to cater towards everyone, not just horny little boys. Give it time and another generation of artists and writers.
Also, please relate to the comic artists here, because I take my share of lip too. When someone complains:
âWhy there arenât enough realistic drawings of women!â
âWhy arenât there any heaver set female protagonists?â
âHow does this woman even run with boobs like that?!â
To clear things up here, most comic artists (specifically men) just arenât into it. Itâs shallow as hell, but we have to pencil 22~24 pages of people, props, backgrounds, etc under a very strict deadline. Not only is it stressful, but the last thing we want to do is draw something that weâre not invested or much less interested in. Also, we tend to think about sex once in a while, even after hitting puberty.
Again, weâre shallow and you need to remember, weâre not artists, weâre commercial artists. We draw beautiful things and we rarely ever produce works that are suppose to connote things other than âprettyâ, versus some artist who takes themselves so seriously that the ever slightest critique sets them off if you decode a meaning of their art wrong.
So for those who canât wait for another generation of artists to adapt to the market, I would challenge you to make your own IP, rather than just draw over sexualized yet hysterical images of Hawkeye/Jace mocking decade old cheesecake art that wasnât meant for your demographic. Yes, Iâm aware of the â52â label a few years ago with the Catwoman pose and the Starfire, but keep in mind, whoâs in charge and their previous contribution to the comic industry. Yeah, that generation, not your generation, that generation.
So, take charge and create your own stories & characters. The comic industry will eventually adapt once their sales start hurting and will wise up, but nothing feels better than creating.
Because it is 2 in the morning and I still feel like procrastinating, and I canât beat this level of Mass Effect.
The thing is, the comic industry used to cater towards young males and it still does with some publishers.
Yes, and thatâs the exact mindset weâre trying to fight. We want to make comics more friendly and equal-opportunity. Because really, should and entire MEDIUM (not just genre or series, MEDIUM) be so exclusive?
Imagine not too long ago, young artists and writers used to thrive off these nerds going through puberty without trying to steal stacks of porn off the racks (streaming free porn wasnât in the cards back in the day). This was their version of legally selling soft-core porn to minors. NOT all publishers and artists did this, but it did inspire an entire generation of artists to use cheesecake.
So fast forward now, some of these artists still make a living off of the pubescent nerds or their âbread and butterâ.
So, letâs break the cycle. If sexist cheesecake only breeds more sexist cheesecake, we should clearly stop letting sexist cheesecake flow so freely.
Weâve always been Itâs awkward to see all this blantant fan service of all the female super heroines, but theyâre forgetting theyâre not the key demo here and that these publishers will slowly adapt to cater towards everyone, not just horny little boys.
Give it time and another generation of artists and writers
But you just said that obviously these boys would grow up to become comic artist inspired by this cheesecake. Vicious cycle, remember?
And no. I donât feel like waiting to be treated like a human being, sorry. Iâd much rather have that as soon as possible please. And seeing how Iâm willing to roll my sleeves up and get my hands dirty to accomplish this, I donât see why youâd have any objection, unless you donât want women to enjoy comic until the next generation, i.e. when youâre dead and gone.
Also, please relate to the comic artists here, because I take my share of lip too. When someone complains:
âWhy there arenât enough realistic drawings of women!â
âWhy arenât there any heaver set female protagonists?â
âHow does this woman even run with boobs like that?!â
âComplain.â A bit loaded of a word, wouldnât you say? Iâd call it a legitimate question. Or better yet, critique.
I would think one would hold themselves to a higher standards than âwell I had an hour, so hereâs this drawing I did, itâs okay I guess.â Not that Iâm so harsh on artist, I understand working a tight deadline and all, but when all they do is constantly make these kinds of mistakes, itâs no longer cutting corners, itâs a serious problem.
And pardon my delving into psychology for a moment, but why do cookie cutter women in unrealistic poses interest you more than, say, realistic women, or a variety of women? Yeah, I know all artist have some favorite feature to draw, but some artist should really think about hy exactly they find these things interesting in the first place. Especially when, often times, their personal tastes interfere with the entirety of the comic.
THI is a critique, and many âfunâ artists have taken it very emotionally. If youâre all for criticism, you should LOVE THI; itâs some of the most clear, enjoyable critique of comics Iâve seen in a very long time.
You seem to resemble the second example; youâre not loudly angry, certainly, but youâre accusing us of not understanding and misinterpreting whatâs already there.
So for those who canât wait for another generation of artists to adapt to the market, I would challenge you to make your own IP, rather than just draw over sexualized yet hysterical images of Hawkeye/Jace mocking decade old cheesecake art that wasnât meant for your demographic.
Weâd love to, but producing a lot of these things requires some sort of infrastructure. Companies that produce media have the massive infrastructure, but since they discriminate, women can actually be actively blocked from producing media. And even if they do, they often get shoved into gender ghettos (think âchick flicksâ).
Yes, Iâm aware of the â52â label a few years ago with the Catwoman pose and the Starfire, but keep in mind, whoâs in charge and their previous contribution to the comic industry. Yeah, that generation, not your generation, that generation.
But theyâre producing for our generation. Their generation has passed already. Weâre living in the now, eyes on the later, shouldnât we try to be as progressive as possible? Especially in this era or rapid change and development? Technology and society are growing more than ever before! Why arenât comics?
And if thatâs the case, why are you complaining about THI? Keep in mind that itâs this generation producing it! I can play that game too, you know.
So, take charge and create your own stories & characters. The comic industry will eventually adapt once their sales start hurting and will wise up, but nothing feels better than creating.
Because things beloved by massive amounts of fans have never been killed off by irrational higher-up before.
The whole âwe are commercial artistsâ thing always makes me think: shouldnât you be held to a higher standard of ethics than a hobbyist? You donât have to do more hours than youâre currently spending in order to draw women with poses which donât distort their anatomy for the sexual gratification of these pubescent boys who are supposedly a) your key demo* and b) only interested in awkwardly drawn quasi-porn.
*I call bull on that btw. Even if it were true, sacrificing other demos just to pander to the larger one doesnât grow the key demo, it just loses you the others. Do I have to draw a diagram or something cause it just seems obvious to me.
Well, âWeâre shallow so ladies sit back and create your own universes, because stories involving women who save the day are designed to appeal to men, and not for you, and if you want to not see women in ridiculous poses, create your own IPsâ is perhaps the most intellectually lazy argument Iâve heard on the topic.Â
The age old âLove it or Leave itâ counter. Hereâs the thing. Constructive criticism is a valid and normal part of being an artist. Crits are grueling and watching some of my friends go through art school seemed like some of the most emotionally damning processes Iâve ever witnessed. The process is supposed to make your work better. If a growing part of your audience is telling you that your comics and characters are great but the way women are depicted, posed etc is a little beyond sillyâŠ(and at times impossible) a rational person would listen.Â
Iâve read articles over the past decade bemoaning the demise of comic books as a medium and I see that not being the case as much as the types of readers are changing. Thumbing your nose at the new demographic might get them to make their own IPs if thats what they have to doâŠbut itâll also get them to stop paying attention to yours. The way various writers and artists have been responding to thisâŠit might serve them right.
What the fuck, who crossed this shitbagâs bridge? Hey, how about fuck you, OP. Wow, laziness is not an excuse for shit anatomy. You can draw a car? learn how to draw some tits, you shit. You drawing a new character? Iâm pretty sure you can learn how to not to drawn women like shit. I think itâs actually harder to draw ridiculous poses than it is to just draw a fucking human. Iâm a pro artist and used to work under a shitbag sexist, another artist turned in artwork for something for a game aimed at tween girls with the nipples protruding. I immediately said ââŠ.holy crap the nipples are protrudingâ. But shitty boss didnât give a shit, didnât tell him to change it, nothing. Nothing. Luckily he left the company.
That is the problem with DC and Marvel. They donât have editors going âwhat the fuck, donât do thatâ. They just accept whatever shit that slides in under deadline. If we keep complaining, hopefully these editors will take a fucking hint and change their standards (or lack thereof). Not all DC/Marvel artists suck, not even remotely, there are some amazing people that do great work, I actually got pissed seeing someone redo a Pichelli cover that had immaculate anatomy.
The problem is that these people are the exception. Thereâs nothing going on in editorial to stop this shit in its tracks, nothing stopping them from hiring assholes like you. Editorialâs taste level is just not there. Even if the artists are lazy, irresponsible pieces of shit like you, they still fucking hire you over people who have better anatomy skills.
Oh and women tend not to apply because of this culture of hiring whatever the fuck asshole who draws lazy shit. Can you imagine for a second what itâs like to work in an environment where lady nipples are all over the fucking place, no one says anything, and if you even remotely drew something like that with the male characters youâd be fired or at least edited. Instead women make webcomics (overwhelmingly female, you shit) or work for gaming companies (steadily rising with women and women in powerful positions). Because the gaming industry actually needs to sell their shit so theyâre steadily getting less shitty, unlike comics where who knows what the fuck theyâre thinking, theyâre dying and dying and no matter what people say to them they cannot adapt.
And youâre acting like a lot of the people behind this arenât making their own shit. BTW, they are, gingerhaze has her own comic, thanks. Pretty sure a lot of these other ladies do too (including myself).
I think the comic book industry will die before they learn how to cater to women. Theyâre too slow, like a glacier of befuddled shit. I hate this fucking âstop complaining, make your own stuffâ. Then how about you stop complaining about people complaining and actually learn how to draw? No? Imagine that.
Maybe think about where youâre gonna be when women start making their own companies and publishing their own stuff. Just think about how youâre gonna be out of a job. If anything, the last election showed that people like you are not the future, and even though youâre saying that, you cannot look in the mirror and go âOH WAIT I SHOULD EVOLVE MY MONKEY BRAIN SO I CAN HAVE A JOBâ. I cannot wait for people like you to be out of a job.
Step father is in a foul mood, I owe board, and I'm already feeling worse than shit. Wish me luck.

Resentment of the Day: On Fake Geek Girls
YouTuber albinwonderland speaks out against the Idiot Nerd Girl meme in response to the recent buzz surrounding the âfake geek girlsâ phenomenon.
Guys take a minute to go thank albinwonderland for putting herself out there to talk about this. Lots of girls do but I think we should go THANK THEM MORE OFTEN because the abuse they are getting is frightening. (link: tw abuse, trigger warning)Â
I love how guys are being horrifying to her on her video and denying the existence of sexism while being utterly misogynistic and disgusting to her.
