i think this proshot also made me realize how similar hades and orpheus are. at the same time hades is telling persephone how much he's done for her (how much he hasn't listened to her and is just doing what he THINKS she'll like instead of paying attention to what she's saying and what she needs) at the exact same time orpheus is distracted by his song and not paying attention to what eurydice is saying and what she needs. what she's begging him for, what she's crying out to him for. he's so wrapped up in his own mission and his job that he forgot to listen out for the person he loves most. hades knew orpheus would turn around because that's exactly what hades himself would do

no okay but persephone. when you listen to the soundtrack it's like she's a party girl she drinks and has fun but you guys dont understand because every single time she took a drink she grimaced. every single time. not once did she enjoy herself, because it wasn't her indulging in her wants it was her coping. and even!! even during livin it up on top when everyone takes a drink there's a moment of silence where they all look almost disgusted by it. none of them enjoy it it doesn't taste good to any of them yet still they drink it??

and then UGH okay because lady of the underground i was under the impression that she was interacting with the workers and whatnot like making the cracks in the wall that orpheus was about to break down but there's no one on stage. the only people on stage are the musicians, hermes, and persephone. none of the workers are there. she's singing to herself. do you understand do you get it?? especially with why do we build the wall right before that because I didn't realize persephone was in that song?? and the whole time she looks terrified. she Doesn't want to be here she Doesn't want to engage with this (my mom compared the song to being at a maga rally and she was 100% correct) but she does anyway, perhaps because she's forced to. and the look of heartbreak when eurydice appears; the way eurydice is confused and put off at first, but it doesn't take long for her to learn the words and join in????

eurydice and persephone is a whole other thing because I never realized how much of a relationship they had. like persephone is quick to be friendly with her, and eurydice is enthralled by that attention. but then during chant when persephone is singing about like the earth dying and people starving she's looking at eurydice walking by. she's looking at her and she looks heartbroken, she's reaching out to her but she can't reach her because she's not there. she watches as the fates strip eurydice of everything she has, and then that look of despair changes of one to fear as hades' eyes land on eurydice as he declares he'll find someone else who will be grateful. and I know that like flowers can be like an analogy for sa but I really felt it during that part. not so much in songbird vs rattlesnake? but definitely during the end of chant like AJHVSGDJAS.

and then like I said when eurydice enters the underworld persephone looks shaken. because she knows eurydice, and she knows orpheus, and- idk man. imagine being in hell and someone you know shows up, but you know they can't leave and you know they're soon to become a shell of who they once were. like. yeah

so i just watched the hadestown proshot and holy fucking shit i truly think that that is the best proshot i have ever seen so here are some specific things i really loved

amber gray's expressions just wow. she is so expressive and such a phenomenal actress

the way the fates appeared behind orpheus during wait for me

how every time during group numbers the camera focused on a certain person you could hear their vocals more clearly than everyone else

the cracking noises during wait for me when the walls opened up

how during doubt comes in all the shots were primarily close ups of orpheus so it was hard to tell where eurydice was

one of the people in my theater shouting "NO" when orpheus turned around

literally so many more things i could talk about this proshot for ages

please i beg if you have not/are not intending on seeing it to watch it it is a masterpiece

The thing about Hadestown is the line “To know how it ends. And still begin to sing it again. As if it might turn out this time” is an incredible way to describe most of life. We try because we have to believe that even when the ending is set in stone, it’s still worth trying. It’s still better to be a person who tried.

The face journey Patrick Page did around the line, "Then doubt comes...Doubt comes in," was so exciting. I was buzzing in my seat.

The way he starts off the stanza just villain-plotting against Orpheus, and then he looks at Persephone and hears himself and realizes he's talking about his own shortcomings as much as Orpheus's, and he just kind of slackens in some combination of shame, resignation, understanding, and says, "Then doubt comes. Doubt comes in," with this clear subtext of, "Oh, I get it now." Perfectly setting up the "It's time for spring," moment.

also this hadestown proshot is what made me realize that hades literally built all that stuff in hadestown FOR PERSEPHONE SO SHE'D WANT TO STAY like SHE'S the reason he made it artificially hot and bright!! he's trying to mimic summer so she doesn't leave!! how did I not realize this before????

ALSO i knew the reason orpheus could finish the song was because he finally understood the fear and doubt hades has every time persephone leaves BUT I DIDNT REALIZE THAT THE TRIAL HADES GIVES WAS ALSO BECAUSE HE UNDERSTOOD ORPHEUS AS WELL!! like hades knew he'd fail because HE'D fail!!

also also I know there's a Thing between hades and eurydice but I didn't realize that there was also one between persephone and orpheus until now, and I think it's intended to show that they're foils of one another, that pre-seasons hades was more like orpheus and pre-seasons persephone was more like eurydice and that their focus on orpheus and eurydice is because they remind them of what they had (and think they lost) - the love o+e have for each other reminds them of themselves, and so hades wants to take eurydice away/lock her away and persephone wants to protect orpheus/let him escape because they're trying to prevent them repeating their own mistakes in their own ways

like the slime tutorial did not give me these revelations, all musicals need professional recordings for this reason!!

Rachel Reid: Oh yeah, in TLG my precious white baby boi, Ilya Rozanov, who is HATED by EVERYONE for NO REASON gets to have his Happily Ever After with a white picket fence house, great career, dog, great friends, and a sex doll husband on his team!!! And ofc I don't hate that Asian guy who is Ilya's partner, I just needed him to look terrible cuz the Closet is so selfish to stay inside of when nothing bad will happen haha. Anyway that Asian guy is so much happier with Ilya, and without his 3 Stanley cup winning team, his C, his pay, his interiority, and he has no mental health because he was lucky enough to have Good Parents UNLIKE MY PRECIOUS BOI ILYA ROZANOVVVVVVV.

The TLG hate tag: Ilya is acting more like what we know about his father than anything else. His actions would make more sense if it was him spiraling into self-destruction instead of just becoming a terrible partner. His internal narration and how his actions are written are completely insane and disconnected. You could put the Boxing Day fight into DARVO checkboxes. Does Rachel Reid understand how to read and write more than one character arc? Does she know Shane Hollander exists as a character and not a fucktoy? She's definitely homophobic, right? Right 🙂‍↕️. She is definitely racist. HR Ilya would destroy TLG Ilya, right? Right 🫡 . Can we even root for Hollanov in TLG without first destroying TLG canon? WE NEED TO GET SHANE HOLLANDER A GUN. We need to create as many TLG rewrites as possible and also scrub our brains of TLG ASAP. The Rage Cannot Be Contained Any Longer.

when i saw hadestown on broadway i got to see jordan fisher and then i watched the proshot last night with reeve and i think those are just. two profoundly different orpheuses. jordan’s orpheus was this inspiring leader kind of figure; he’s charismatic and bold and had his circumstances been better would have gone far, and he’s extremely likable that way. then the story becomes about how fate can really fuck you over no matter how brave you are, how hard you try, and the voices in your head can get to you no matter who you are.

meanwhile reeve’s orpheus is… pathetic. absolutely pathetic. just, complete and utter failure. cannot do a single thing right. doesn’t actually sing like a bird up on a line. his paper flower? awful. doesn’t look like a flower. comes across as slightly more creepy than cute when he first tries to talk to eurydice.

not a huge fan of reeve! but pathetic characters are fun in their own way, and i do love the sense of inevitability that his orpheus brings to the show. you KNOW that guy is made up of 2 parts anxiety, 1 part confusion, 2 parts doubt. i both love and hate looking at him, and then looking at eva (who by the way is absolutely perfect and amazing and does sing like a songbird) and going oh no. ohhhh no. girl… with HIM??? you’re absolutely doomed.

okay but like plagiarizing an Old Song aside orpheus isn’t even good at songwriting… he only knows how to sing one (1) song and half of it is plagiarized and the other half is the same semi melody every time and he is just narrating stuff with no rhyme no rhythm no nothing, just oh look here’s hades! let’s sing about hades. and persephone is his wife? bet. add that in. oh wait i am having realizations so i will add that in too. complete stream of consciousness song lyrics i guess. please may that NEVER become a trend.

watching the hadestown proshot today really made me remember that orpheus, no matter how much i love him, is such a pathetic little guy… his whole thing is writing this amazing song that’s gonna save the world, and we see him sing it and it works a miracle and gets him the girl (WOOOOOOOOOO) and then hermes promptly informs us all that orpheus was in fact plagiarizing a very old song. whoops.

Also on the topic of Hadestown, I really like how it establishes Orpheus as someone who can’t keep the promises he makes before he goes to the Underworld. He promises Eurydice that they’ll always be together and he will take care of her, but that immediately falls apart as soon as winter comes and he fixated on his song. It’s not that he doesn’t care, as he later crawls down to the underworld for her, but he makes a lot of grand promises he’s unable to keep, which sets up his inevitable turn at the end really well.
