After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in English from the then Pan American University (now University of Texas Rio Grande Valley), Anzaldúa worked as a preschool and special education teacher. In 1977, she moved to California, where she supported herself through her writing, lectures, and occasional teaching stints about feminism, Chicano studies, and creative writing at San Francisco State University, the University of California, Santa Cruz, Florida Atlantic University, and other universities.⠀
The queer Chicana feminist scholar Gloria Anzaldúa refused to deny any part of her life, which helped her challenge limiting binaries — like male or female, or American or Mexican — in feminist scholarship. Anzaldúa's most famous work, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, published in 1987, helped transform feminism, as it encouraged readers to embrace the ambiguities and contradictions that come with their overlapping (gender, race, sexual orientation, class, etc.) identities. Despite its significance to both feminist and ethnic scholarship, her book was part of the Mexican American Curriculum that was prohibited under Arizona House Bill 2281, banning it in Tucson.⠀

I’m so excited this finally passed! As a undergrad student who graduated from the first Ethnic Studies department created in the United States @sanfranciscostate I learned first hand from professors who were at the forefront protesting for our rights to learn about our Latino heritage and history in higher education. I would not have had the opportunity to major in Raza Studies and learn about nuestra cultura if it wasn’t for them. Gracias to our #CCSF and #SFSU Ethnic Studies Professors ✊🏽🤎~ #LatinaswithMasters ⠀

The California State University system said that, starting with the 2023-24 academic year, its 430,000-plus undergraduates will be required to take a course in ethnic studies or social justice. The CSU Board of Trustees approved the new graduation requirement Wednesday, the first significant change to its general education curriculum in 40 years.⠀
“Our goal is for CSU students, from every major and in every workplace, to be leaders in creating a more just and equitable society,” Chancellor Timothy White said in a statement, adding that the new modification “will empower our students to meet this moment in our nation’s history, giving them the knowledge, broad perspectives and skills needed to solve society’s most pressing problems.’’
CSU said students will be able to meet the new requirement through one of a variety of courses, including classes that explore issues related to race, class, immigration status, police reform, sexuality, public health disparities, immigration status, etc. #forbestheculture
