Throwback to when I was about 18 and I watched in real time as a trans guy I knew had his PTSD and anxiety manipulated against him by radfems as they groomed him into medically and socially detransitioning. We were in transmed spaces, so really he was only as nice as anyone could be in those cesspools, but I watched this generally funny and charismatic trans man that I looked up to deteriorate and detransition into a woman who was vocally just. bitter, jaded, miserable, constantly angry, constantly lashing out, and regularly relapsing both with self harm and substance abuse because the pain and dissociation that came with detransition was too much.

That was my wakeup call that I was laying with dogs and dangerously close to catching fleas.

There's a reason why you should never trust a radfem and it's because she would rather see you detransition and kill yourself in a hole of desperate dysphoria than let you live wholly as yourself.

Just so we're clear, the last thing that I had heard about this person several years ago was that she had detransitioned, became a TERF, and had attempted to take her life for the first time since before her transition.

I do not share this shit lightly. I'm using she/her here because that was what she was using last time I heard of her, but when this person was on T and surrounded by other trans people she was on several good clean streaks wrt both self harm and substances and was generally doing well. She was still struggling with her mental health but don't we all.

When she started hanging around radfems and detransitioned it triggered her suicidality so badly she tried to follow through for the first time in over a decade.

The situation kind of speaks for itself.

Over twenty years ago my big brother got me a job at a Taco Bell in the St. Louis suburbs-West County. He warned me that it was the “gay Taco Bell”, but since I was coming from the “gay Howard Johnson’s” I wasn’t shocked. It turns out it was the black trans women Taco Bell complete with black trans women in management. And they’d worked out an arrangement with the local teen Narcotics Anonymous group so that twice a week we would shut down the drive thru and the dining room and exclusively serve 60+ teens in various stages of recovery. And many of the women I worked with were in various stages of being out or transitioning and they were from all generations from teens to over 50. One woman I worked with had a regular corporate job presenting as a man 9-5 Mon-Fri and then came to Taco Bell and worked 6pm -2am Friday and Saturday night so she could be herself surrounded by other black transwomen in those stolen weekends. And we had customers come from all over the metro area because they knew they could be themselves in the dining room. I only worked there from 1999-2001 but for young me, this was a vital, formative experience. Some of the girls came from north city all the way out to the “gay Taco Bell” on Manchester in west county because they heard it was safe to work there. Like- I know times have changed but they haven’t changed much in 20 years. I’m still convinced that for lgbt youth, finding a job at your city’s version of the “gay Taco Bell” is key to survival.

By the way it's like. Really fucked how society's thoughts on epilepsy is just "get over it." Seizures can cause permanent brain damage. Seizures can kill people. Seizures hurt like hell. Allow me to reiterate that seizures can kill people. And you're just gonna casually put flashing lights, a common trigger for seizures in your advertisement, in your animation meme, in your edit, on your billboards, without even thinking about putting a simple disclaimer? That's unbelievable. Your little anime edit could deadass cost a life and you're not gonna put a warning because it's "inconvenient" or "people like that shouldn't be on the internet" (ableist) (the problem exists outside the internet also). Or you'll give insufficient ones like putting it in the captions or only giving like one second before the flashing lights appear, meaning that the trigger's already in motion before anyone who needs the warning can read it and save themselves from literal physical danger.

We need to start commenting under other people's posts about how to properly warn for flashing lights and eyestrain. We need to be emailing and calling companies about their possibly triggering advertisements that could induce seizures. We need to stop tolerating ableism and start speaking up for the more vulnerable.

Also, stop putting epilepsy warnings. That's like saying "warning: schizophrenia" on a post including unreality or "warning: dyslexia" on a post with a typing quirk. First off, the disability mentioned isn't the only group of people that this could trigger. Second, it doesn't truly get the message across and instead makes it worse for those with the disability-- scrolling through the epilepsy tag on Tumblr should get you to view the content of other epileptic people, but no, you just get a bunch of flashing lights and eyestrain, even though you could instead tag for, oh I dunno, flashing lights and eyestrain.

Anyways this Disability Pride, and for every month that comes after, think about epileptic people and others who are triggered by flashing lights/eyestrain. Happy pride to those who experience seizures too frequently due to the unaccommodating and ableist societies we live in!
