And once he was far enough away did Alphinaud’s cool facade drop. He turned and snatched Joker’s bloodied hand, tugging his arm until he meekly followed him, winding through the rocky pillars of the natural cave. “What in the world happened?! ” He cried, sitting Joker down upon a rock and drawing a handkerchief, which he splashed with water from a canteen. He raised it to Joker’s cheek, eyes flickering over each bloody stain across his body as he debated where to even begin. Joker was silent for several long moments, staring blankly through Alphinaud even as the boy hovered directly in front of his face. Then at last he gave a low hum. “We fucked up.” Was his dull, belated reply, “They spotted us. Things got rough. Most of it’s not mine.” He added as concern twisted Alphinaud’s expression. “…All the same,” Alphinaud sighed, wiping diligently at Joker’s face. He allowed him, entirely passive, “We can hardly present you at our meeting like this. We’ll just…” He swallowed, “Just clean up what we can for now.” And he poured the spout of the waterskin directly over Joker’s hands, letting reddened rivulets of water flow between his fingers. “I am sorry,” Alphinaud said softly, once Joker was looking halfway more presentable. Joker, silent again, tilted his head in confusion, “For placing responsibility for this upon you. ‘Twas my plan, and yet it once again fell to you to see the dirty work done in its fulfillment.“ “It’s fine.” Joker replied, voice without inflection, “It’s what we do. We wouldn’t be much use if we balked at getting bloody, no?”
