"To boldy go where no one has gone before" everywhere you go is populated what the fuck are you talking about
i know this is a joke but iirc it’s where no man has gone before and i always understood that as like. humans. no human has been where they’re going. not that nobody at all has been there
shipping the emh and tuvok my mind has been opened.....the two grumpy queens.....
the doctor discovers that men are an option (just hadn’t thought about it before) and tuvok is the only guy onboard that doesn’t actively irk him. installs a homosexuality mod and sees where it takes him. tuvok grapples with the ethics of whether or not this counts as cheating since technically he did establish that one time that holograms are game in dire circumstances

my favorite weirdly low tech sci fi thing is the PADD technology in star trek, where everyone has like 30 ipads on their desk at all times bc they seemingly each represent one singular email
AH YES OKAY so I had to think a lot about this for fic writing because, well, fic writing, and anyways there are a few first conceits:
Most importantly: there are no apps. No apps.
No apps means none of that shit cloud infrastructure because there are no tech monopolies
I can't recall it exactly but I remember reading here and some other places that 1) they shouldn't function exactly like tablets because that's a single fail point that kills everything else, and 2) this would be during a trend of preferring some single-function items. Free of the various forces that push tablets to have everything, it does become more convenient to have a tablet that is JUST for reading.
I imagine that they are severely limited. Can't decide if they would be able to work wirelessly but I imagine a very small range. And they are also pretty easy to obtain and fix, so you can have one that lasts for years, possibly decades, because they've been standardized and they're built to be fixed and fixed again.
this makes a lot of sense considering the technological context of the time!
my grandmother worked in a sort of data management-secretarial position in the 70s, and she always talks about how she had to have about 4-5 different desktop computers because each one was only able to run one specific program/software. PADDs being incredibly individual follows perfectly with this idea, when computers being able to serve more than one purpose was foreign.
PADDs also seem to represent a sort of convergent evolution, where they replace a lot of different things, such as books, personal computers, fax machines, word processors, calculators, etc, but all end up looking basically the same, because that’s the ideal/most efficient way for them to be used in star trek’s daily life. the fact that they’re all the same technology is sort of a coincidence, because they perform different functions, and likely became so similar gradually over time
