stages of writing a morally grey character

stage 1: they're the villain. they're terrible. i hate them.

stage 2: okay wait. they have a point actually.

stage 3: oh no. oh no i understand them now.

stage 4: they did nothing wrong actually and i will defend them with my life

stage 5: okay fine they did SOME things wrong but they had reasons

stage 6: i am now writing a 3000 word backstory that nobody asked for to justify everything they've ever done

currently on stage 6 with Margaret. send help. or don't. i'm thriving in the moral ambiguity.

my favorite period of time is the one where I swear off drinking and I feel my body begin to come back down to earth

and I see you next to me suddenly back in my bed and we re-introduce ourselves we smile a little bit and get right back into it

and then we climb back up that mountain, steeper than any of that shit they print on postcards (though i like postcards) and meet on that peak and enjoy the view until our bodies make us come back down
