Does Islam Believe in Original Sin ?

Islam does not teach that every person is born carrying Adam’s guilt.

According to the Qur’an, Adam and Eve made a mistake, recognized their wrongdoing, repented directly to God, and were forgiven.

Islam therefore distinguishes between two things:

The consequences of another person’s actions can affect us.

The moral guilt of another person’s actions cannot be inherited by us.

Every child begins life free from inherited guilt, and every person is responsible for their own choices.

This belief also shapes the Islamic understanding of forgiveness and Jesus. Muslims honor Jesus as the Messiah and a prophet, but they do not believe that God required his sacrifice in order to forgive Adam’s descendants.
