writing sex & smut is greatly subjective yes, but there must be a reason some fics/books/scenes are so electrifying to read. What makes your favorite scenes the best, in a technical sense? How is real intimacy portrayed so that it jumps through the pages and floods your chest? I’m on a mission to intentionally write really great and probably extremely freaky sex, so:

when i was a teenager i used to catch myself thinking "i'm really glad i'm alive right now because of all the cool personal technologies that exist" and when i did i'd think it through and reckon that well, its not like teenagers in the 70s and 80s knew they didnt have ipods or facebook or whatever. they were also happy with the tech they had. and i'd reason that in the future there would be more fun technologies that i dont know i'm missing out on right now and the future will be an even cooler time to exist

anyway i was dead fucking wrong about that last part. i hate personal technologies now. i miss having an ipod that doesnt advertise shit to me and i miss when my htc wildfire didnt harass me 45 times a day to install an ai assistant and then install it anyway when i say no and i miss when the internet wasnt 5 websites all of which i have to log into and i miss when i didnt need an app to talk to my landlord. sorry past me you were actually right about 2009

au where Ilya is a contestant on Love Island or some raunchy dating show where Shane is a producer. Gorgeous sun-god hockey-star Ilya is quite popular (duh) and loves to go all-out on every challenge, like fully committing to diving into foam pits and getting slimed and making out with everyone, meanwhile Shane is planning all these events with the goal of just seeing Ilya take off his shirt again. It obviously gets super competitive between them, Shane concocting more audience-approved twists and Ilya taking it like a champ while becoming increasingly obsessed with Shane, despite also being a favorite to win the show with a (very lovely) woman. They’re also definitely almost-fucking off-set during breaks, and predictably feel guilty about it but not enough to stop. Big dramatic finish to the show when Ilya very publicly goes after Shane, maybe taking second place just to declare his love

Shane and Ilya’s daughter goes through a phase sometime in elementary school where her default comeback to anyone who bothers her is “do you know who my dads are??” (and it’s like when a kid takes her crayon) So eventually her teacher has to sit Shane and Ilya down and tell them that their daughter has threatened every child in her class with the wrath of her big scary famous hockey dads over relatively minor offenses. Of course Shane apologizes profusely but Ilya just shrugs and is like “well she’s not wrong, we would hurt anyone who hurts our daughter” and Shane will argue ofc but the fact is that Ilya is the intimidating parent and Shane is the one with his lawyer on speed dial

We all agree that Cliff and Ilya single-handedly ran the Boston club scene better than anyone’s ever done it. Personally, I believe it follows that they’ve had some insane threesomes with a few (blessed) women, and although they never talked about it explicitly, Cliff is definitely queer or fluid in some way, though he’s comfortable with the lack of definition. I also believe that because of this, Ilya and Cliff are actually very close, but in a less obvious way— a lot goes unsaid between them because it doesn’t need to be an explicit conversation— they’re just there for each other no questions asked, and there’s a trust in the fact they can always make each other laugh.

Besties for the resties is real and I’m cooking on a little backstory in chapter 4 ;)

There is so much to say about Ilya's experience as an immigrant and foreigner in north america. There is also so much to say about Shane, a biracial person who feels disconnected from his Japanese heritage yet never fully accepted in the west. RR doesn't really touch on this (and that's okay) but I think about this part of Shane & Ilya's identities a lot.

As a biracial person myself born in the US to an immigrant father, I can't help but empathize with the darker corners of these characters who are quietly grappling with the dissonance of north american culture. It makes absolute sense that for Shane and Ilya, success in hockey allows them to prove that they belong. In separate ways, they are fighting for their place in a society that is predisposed to see them as Other. I can perfectly picture the ways stereotyping happens- Ilya cultivates a fearsome and villainous persona easily, because much of the world views Russians as aggressive and scary anyways. His intelligence compared to Shane's is underestimated, which is dumb because they're the two best players in the league. Like please.

Their queerness is at the forefront of their story for important reasons, but we need to remember that the NHL is so white, and Shane and Ilya are not. White passing maybe, but not culturally.

Ilya and Damen the bisexual sun gods themselves are the type of mfs to say in complete sincerity that “every person is different” sexually and actually mean it. Like goddamn they sleep around for the love of the game and are insanely good at it. I think they realized as an afterthought that they were bi, bc labels come secondary to simply enjoying themselves

Hilariously however, their husbands are the ones who bring the general populous to their knees on account of them being pretty but in an androgynous and universal sort of way which is very unfortunate for women bc they’re as Ilya puts it, “super gay” but that doesn’t even matter bc Laurent and Shane are so resolutely celibate that everyone is worried about them and can’t believe no one’s managed to even once bag the nation’s heartthrob in 20+ years

As soon as Ilya/Damen enter frame, they become happily monogamous and Laurent/Shane are suddenly unmatched on the freak scale?? & it’s just beautiful to see

Ilya Rozanov is never beating the Disney Princess allegations in my mind bc wdym children love him even when he beats them ruthlessly at video games?? and all of the dogs at Drover farms just follow him around in a cloud of happiness?? He effortlessly pulls off sparkly nails and a flower headband in TLG, wears bold colors shamelessly, adopts Luca Haas and helps Troy heal & become whimsical?? He’s also like so pretty in the sunlight (Ilya runs golden hr) and probably sings a lot (off-key). He’s out here forming spiritual bonds with anything that breathes and if Shane can be an angry kitten or whatever then damn it Ilya can be a princess. my god he already uses such dramatic hand gestures and tears up easily and simply wants to ride into the sunset with his husband so I petition we get this man his tiara immediately

Damen looked up from the papers in his hands, a strange look on his face. When Laurent had walked into their chambers and saw him bent over the parchments, he had assumed that he had been looking into one of the documents from their earlier meeting, but Laurent had learned to distinguish all of Damen’s different expressions over the years. Right then, he was facing his husband, not his king. 

“I’m not entirely sure,” Damen said, frowning as he took up a different paper. “I came across these on a bench in the south garden, someone must have abandoned them.”

“Let me see,” Laurent said, taking the seat beside him and reaching forward. He accepted the stack, his eyes scanning the page for a few moments before realization hit, a smile curling on his lips.

“Oh,” he said. “I haven’t seen this kind yet.”

So I’ve been stuck analyzing the thematic and character parallels between Captive Prince and Heated Rivalry for quite a while (could absolutely write a paper on it btw) but my FAVORITE similarity ever is actually the phenomenon of the Ragebaited Best Friend: this is the story of Nikandros and Hayden. Stay with me.

These two characters represent the hilarious trope of being the MC’s best friend who either literally or metaphorically loses the MC for a while, then gains them back, only to experience a completely altered (by love) version of their best friend, accompanied by a man whose only goal seems to be ragebaiting the best friend into psychosis.

Let’s remember from Capri:

Laurent: “I meant to kill him but my uncle wouldn’t let me”, then Nik: “exalted, I beg permission challenge the prince of Vere to a duel.” Then Damen: “Denied.”

Compare that with TLG:

Hayden: “I’m going to punch him.” Then Shane: “Don’t.”

This specifically is so funny bc Ilya and Laurent are the most SEASONED at ragebaiting because it’s their primary defense mechanism, and they’ll do it even to their husband’s best friend, which I deeply respect.

We have to remember that Hayden and Nikandros symbolically represent past versions of Shane and Damen, before they went on a journey that changed the way they want to fundamentally show up as leaders. By the end of King’s Rising and The Long Game, they’ve mutually said ‘fuck it,’ and sacrificed everything for love, because this is the new sort of impact they want to make. The (fairly negative) reactions Nik and Hayden display towards their best friends choosing to do this, AND be with Laurent or Ilya represents the mindset of the narrow-minded populous that Shane and Damen have already stepped away from. This is a culture and society who has always antagonized Laurent or Ilya, explaining why those two automatically assume such a prickly position in relation to Nik and Hayden.

I think this is such an intelligent dynamic for an author to infuse into a story. Personal growth often happens individually, and from this hilarious trope of a best friend who seems rooted in tradition, we can begin to understand how revolutionary Shane and Ilya, and Damen and Laurent really are in choosing to shift a culture (hockey or international relations) in order to be together.
