Ich bin immer begeistert wenn in irgend'nem Buch oder einer Doku gesagt wird, dass jemand "nach [...] eilte". It was not until today that I really learned that you do not choose the brainworms. the brainworms choose you.

I realized I gravitate in fiction a lot towards heavily and painfully closeted queer male characters.

Like for example if the story is set in the 80s/90s or maybe even historical fiction, I eat that up.

I realized that this isn't necessarily the case in contemporary fiction.

Why? I thought about this. Stories set in the current time with queer characters, even if they feature, which they often do, being closeted and eventual outing, things are often good in the end. And the discrimination and internalized queerphobia are really minor struggles that disappear or can be worked around.

But in historical fiction, a character being gay and their struggles are gut wrenching and it influences everything about them. And I realized I can relate more to these depictions and find something cathartic in them, as a gay trans male person.

And since there's not a lot of trans representation even though I do seek it out intentionally, these representations of closeted gay characters are what resonates with me the most.

Plus, if there is trans representation, the character themselves often doesn't face the struggles that come with it in the story, either because they fully transitioned and are passing or because the author created an accepting environment for them (don't get me wrong, these are valid and needed depictions!).

I don't know if I was going anywhere particular with this. I'm just thinking.

I found some of my old youtube videos again and I watched them expecting to cringe at my younger self but I actually felt so much compassion for that version of me who made minecraft videos and was disappointed in himself for not doing enough but now I am sitting here and I am so proud of him for the videos he did make

Discussion for the Table  

How do you go about improving your writing?  Do you seek out advice and tips?  Do you read more books?  What do you think you’ve improved on the most?

I thought I'd add my cents to this.

There was a time in my life where I consumed LOADS of writing advice, which I don't do anymore. Keyword: analysis paralysis (those are two words, whoops-)

I'm not actively writing on a book project right now because I don't have all the notes and cornerstones together yet and I'm scared of the plot.

BUT I really like the little scenes I'm writing for fun! If there's a scene in my head, no matter how canonical or coherent, in the story, in the history of the characters, somewhere completely else or even an AU of the characters that don't even have their own story yet, I try to write it.

I set a timer and just write, not backspacing unless I've made a typo. That's the most useful writing advice I've ever gotten to actually get somewhere.

Right now in March, I have my own personal little challenge going to write 200 words (roughly ten minutes for my speed) every day, which doesn't seem like a lot, but better something than nothing.

And it is reading books and consuming stories that inspire me to write and help me improve! I take notes on what I liked about a story or what I found interesting after I'm done with it, or what I think could've been done better or what my personal spin on the concept would be. Not just books but podcasts, tv series or even historical events or mythology if I come across it and find it to be interesting.

someone is participating in a culture i don't understand? not my business.

someone got an abortion? not my business.

someone identifies in a way that doesn't make sense to me? not my business.

someone has a medical issue i don't understand? not my business.

if it doesn't negatively impact me or others, it's not my business. and i will continue to push for legislation that allows people to just live their lives, because why should i or the government have a say in shit that doesn't affect us? it's not our business.
