First of all, I know that I've been inactive for a while. I've been meaning to explain and this is not how I wanted to break the silence. Suffice to say, I am okay, and aware of how lucky I am for that, and I hope one day I can go back to crafting - I just don't have the workspace for it right now. Secondly, I realise that right now, a lot of terrible things are happening in the world. And I realise that one small cat cafe probably doesn't look like a big deal next to them. But if I can spread the word, I will. Mog on the Tyne is special to me, and this is the least I can do. If you can, please help a cafe that has given so much to cat lovers in Newcastle. Thank you.

Well  known for being the only metal to be a liquid at standard temperature and pressure, mercury has captivated the imagination since ancient times. In alchemy it was considered to be one of the three basic substances alongside sulfur and salt, and also one of the planetary metals. Unfortunately, mercury is also highly toxic and caused many health problems for people who worked with it. Perhaps the most famous case is the use of mercury compounds to make felt hats; the symptoms of mercury poisoning led to the phrase "mad as a hatter." In more modern times mercury has found use in tooth fillings, thermometers, and a a form of memory in early computers, but in many fields it is now being phased out for safer materials.

Lithium is the first metal to appear on the periodic table and also the lightest element to be a solid at standard temperature and pressure. As the first of the alkaline metals it is highly reactive and fizzes when dropped into water. The most common use of lithium is in batteries, including those used in phones and laptops. Lithium was discovered in 1817 and named after the Greek word for "stone" as it was discovered in minerals.

Roentgenium remained a hypothetical heavy element until its synthesis in 1994. As the heavier homologue to gold, it was sometimes previously known as eka-gold, which is a bit less silly than its other placeholder name, unununium (or Uuu). Its final name, made official in 2004, commemorates Wilhelm Rontgen, who discovered X-rays. Whilst it is predicted to have similar properties to gold, silver, and copper, it is difficult to study as its longest known half life is about ten minutes.

The fifth of the alkaline earth metals, barium is named for the Greek for "heavy" due to the weight of the minerals it occurs in, which is why this Elemental Cat is ready to hit the gym (although you wouldn't really make weights out of the stuff!). Like other alkaine earth metals it has a distinctive flame test colour, an apple green shade that is used to make green fireworks. Its most well known use is as a radiocontrast agent for taking x-rays of the digestive system, due to its high atomic number making it very opaque to x-ray radiation.

Today's WIP is another Elemental Cat. This little guy was surprisingly tricky to put together, it's a lot of work to do make sure the different colours are properly lined up. Can you guess the element?

Lycanroc with claws. Some of them anyway. (You can see the Midday form in the background.) Needle felting is fun but one thing I wasn't expecting was how time consuming it is. Or is that just me because I'm newer to it?

Sphinx WIP, spent the morning on her main skin, next up is hair and wings. She was an interesting exercise in stretching boundaries; I rarely sculpt human faces.

I just did this and it’s pretty good. It kinda hits the line between cutesy self-care and making you deal with your shit, so I guess it might fit for a lot of people. It requires you to change tasks quite a lot though and focus on tasks for 5-15 minutes. So if that’s not your thing you might need to adapt it. (It doesn’t use its own timer so it doesn’t force you to do exactly 15 minutes)

Excellent site that I tried out earlier today, and seconding the above comment as I’ve always been trying to find the right balance between fluffy self care and actually Doing Stuff Already. Making a small contribution to a big thing is always good for me. I may not finish it all today, but I can get moving, give myself a set time to work on AND worry about the thing, and do something nice for myself afterwards.
