The Jacques Ibert Concerto for Xylophone and Band With Maybe Some Flute Also.
The flutist is pretty good but the xylophone ruins it tbh.
All my friends are doing new music stuff
and I’m just here trying to figure out how to play the recorder and traverso
@Carl Nielsen why did u base your flute concerto’s crisp, staccato theme around Eb5, huh? Not cool, bro, not cool
I don’t get it? E-flat is pretty easy to play staccato, isn’t it? The tempo of this piece is slow enough (depending on how you play it) to single tongue this part which makes it even more manageable.
Also I would describe that part as light and playful, rather than crisp and staccato. The goal of the section is to contrast the somewhat harsher and bolder beginning with something more subdued. I certainly wouldn’t try for the shortest possible articulation here.
Here’s a recording of me playing the 1st movement from November. https://soundcloud.com/tentenguy/carl-nielsen-concerto-for-flute-and-piano-from-memory
Ohohoho! Yes, let’s talk interpretation! More under the cut!!

Well each flute is different and each player is different as well. I usually found that E-natural in the middle register was more prone to cracking because it’s the first non-vented harmonic fingering. Also C-sharp below that is the note I would describe as most fuzzy and sticking-out in terms of tone color.
I saw a live performance of this by the 2nd place winner of the International Nielsen Flute Competition, Yukie Ota. Wow, she was really good. She nailed the contrast and everything! The orchestra (Kalamazoo symphony) was a little small for the piece, but they also had the Prokofiev violin concerto (the first one, I think,) on the program so it was sort of necesarry. I would have loved to see the whole orchestra go at the Nielsen with her, and in a better hall too, but it sure was a wonderful experience.
The Nielsen concerto is one of the few pieces in the repertoire that has equal demands technically and interpretively/musically. Most flute composers just throw a bunch of fast notes at us and that’s it.

PSA:17.3mm from the center of the embouchure hole, not the edge
Oh. My. FUCKING. GOD.
I... my flute... why...
I had my flute sent in to a local music store for a full overhaul last spring. The flute tech there is pretty well known and respected around here. There’s a large symphony orchestra in town, and all 3 flutes and the subs use him.
The reason I am making this post is because. My headjoints. They, ALL 4 OF THEM, had the headcork placed 17.3 mm from the UPPER EDGE OF THE EMBOUCHURE HOLE. If you don’t know, for proper intonation, most flutes require headjoint cork to be placed 17.3 mm from the CENTER of the embouchure hole.
I have been frustratedly dealing with really bad intonation for over a year, because of this failure to remember basic flute repair stuff. I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING WITH THE EQUIVALENT OF A PRE-COOPER SCALE FLUTE. BECAUSE OF THIS. AAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHH.
Also I didn’t get into the university I’m attending now’s flute program because of bad intonation. Thanks, world. Thanks.
So basically, next time you get your flute repaired, make SURE that you check your cork placement. It will save so much pain and agony in the long run.
Now to go practice.
Transfer Audition Tomorrow
Wow, it’s finally here! I’m auditioning (and interviewing) for the flute and composition studios at WMU tomorrow! Also get to meet the Collegium Musicum (Early Music Ensemble) director. And a secret other thing that I’m not going to talk about publicly until I have more details. Such excitement!
Wish me luck!

Oh it's OK I understand. I think I have a picture of me somewhere on my blog. I don't post much so it shouldn't be hard to find. I can reblog it right now so you can see.

イベールフルート協奏曲
こんいちは、みんなさん!日本の著作権は五十(50) 年ですよ。 ジャック・イベール は1962年に死んだから、著作権じゃない。
フルート 協奏曲 の新版です:amzn.to/22OLZFR!
Basically, there’s a new printing of the Ibert flute concerto from Japan because Ibert’s music is no longer copyright there. If you want a copy but don’t want to shell out for the ridiculously overpriced Alphonse Leduc edition, it’s certainly a good idea to order this one. 2808 JPY is about 23 USD right now. It gets released in February, and it not only includes the concerto, but pièce for flute alone, and entracte for flute and guitar are there too!
JAPANESE or CHINESE?!?!
Soooo guys I would love your opinion on this… one of my new year resolutions is to learn an Asian language but I can’t decide between Japanese or mandarin! I already speak Brazilian Portuguese, English and French fluently. And I have an intermediate level of German (and can speak some Spanish) so I want to add an Asian one to the list :)
Reasons for learning Japanese:
-I have always loved the language
-I was actually born in Tokyo… (I only stayed there for two months so I obviously don’t remember anything..)
-I am really interested in the culture
Reasons for learning Mandarin:
-I have many many many many good friends which speak mandarin
-most spoken language in the world
:) so what do you guys think? Anyone else ever tried to learn Japanese or mandarin here?
The differences between the languages are quite a bit larger than most people initially think.
Many Chinese characters are used in Japanese, therein referred to as “Kanji,” but the pronunciation and sometimes meaning are different. Japanese also has two syllabaries, which are basically like the alphabet in that on their own they have no real meaning, but they represent a sound. As the name implies, each sound is one syllable. The more difficult thing about Japanese is that the word order is different. In western languages, the sentence order might be something like this: “I eat food,” or subject-verb-object. In Japanese however, it would be “I food eat,” or subject-object-verb. It gets more complex than that, but that’s the basic idea.
Mandarin has the advantage of being more similar in terms of grammar to English. The problems however, come in the form of reading and listening: you need to know literally thousands of characters to read nearly anything, and the pronunciation varies so widely between regions that you’ll have to listen very carefully for the pitch of each word. In a way, Chinese is a more musical language than Japanese, the tones of each word can assist in portraying the definition, and the emphasis has to be just right for you to be understood.
Basically, I feel like Japanese is more accessible, whereas Chinese is more challenging. You can start reading Japanese quite quickly once you learn the kana, but Chinese is another story. I’m learning Japanese at the moment, and it’s quite a fun journey. Good luck and enjoy!

Well...
They already mailed my prescreening decision. Hopefully it’s positive. And even if it’s not, at least I made some music. :)
