i ended up rushing this one a bit bc i'm putting all my effort into the tuesday/saturday prompts (combining them into one piece), and this week has been a NIGHTMARE so i'm behind on the wed/fri ones for my writing prompt half of the week, but by golly i WILL DO IT. even if the quality has to be cheeks for a couple pieces to get there

His Reflection on a Snugstone

Summary: Monday Prompt: Family / "Your magic is so kind." It was selfish. More so than anyone would believe. He didn’t care about the result, or the fanfare, or the way it made his heart squeeze when he saw his inventions being used to better the lives of the little guy. All he truly wanted was to prove his torch hadn’t gone out. Because if that fire, that star constantly singing his palms as he clung to it with all his might, ever did flicker out? Who would he be then? aka: olruggio thinks about his snugstone invention and what it really says about him.

Distinguishing Marks/Tattoos: freckles EVERYWHERE

Typical Style/Clothing: likes soft, tight-fitting clothing covering lots of skin. casual outfit - skintight turtleneck with middle finger loop, high-waisted pants. witch attire - cape is an earthy with gold embroidery of feathers around the hem, cap same color. cap has two reflective lenses in it; she pulls it down over her face as a (real) plague doctor esque mask when working

Other Details: very small and lithe + baby face, often mistaken for a younger witch. speech disorder resulting in a slur-stutter combo, keeps her lips pressed tightly together most of the time because of it (old habit from bad parenting)

Personality

Basic Description: freaky little beast. very quiet, VERY observant, VERY smart

Key Traits: doesn’t like other people much socially. not very nice, but exceptionally kind. a little spacey and out there, but don’t let it fool you

Likes: solving new problems, making spells/contraptions, welding/smithing/carving her own tools, owlcats, brushbugs, working late at night when nobody else is awake

Dislikes: being made fun of, interruptions to her work, being told what to do, black-and-white thinking, arbitrary rules, having to talk to customers

Quirks / Habits: ambidextrous. can write with both hands at once without looking. chews her thumbs when focused. likes to pretend she’s a bird when her cape and mask/hat are on. sits like a gargoyle with shrimp posture. likes to use her long hair as a curtain so other people can’t see what she’s drawing/writing. “signs” all of her work with a doodle of a bird

Background Summary

studied all kinds of magic, considered the prodigy of a small town of witches south of kahln. her struggle with speech made her unpopular, though, and she was often outcasted both out of jealousy and judgement alike.

around the age of ten, she observed a pair of young brimhats injured in the nearby forest while she was out foraging. they spotted her, and she didn’t run, surprisingly. she came over and told them to teach her how to help them, because she didn’t like seeing things die

she learned all about medicinal herbs and old, forbidden healing magic, and impressed the brimhats with her ability to deduce the origins of any spell she knew the sigils for even if she’d never seen it. they taught her a slew of new symbols to work with from the days of old. when it was time for them to leave after recovering, they invited her to come along, but she refused very easily. she didn’t trust the witch authorities anymore after seeing kind and helpful brimhats, but she didn’t trust them, either, and called them out for having an agenda just as much as the pointed caps. she promised not to snitch, though. she didn’t like talking anyways

they recognized their debt to her for saving them and parted ways, promising her a place among them if she ever chose to throw away her pointed cap

she used what she learned to develop new contraptions just barely skirting the line of legality, but too helpful and impressive to pass up. her specialty developed in creating and inventing intricate, customized prosthetics to replace amputated limbs (not necessarily for a noble reason. she just likes challenge)

Abilities

extremely advanced with contraption magic. combine richeh and olruggio and you get this freak. tiny, neat sigils in large connective circles

knows forbidden healing magic. doesn’t use it, but informs her inventions with the ideas of old. does not tell a SOUL

can pick apart and near-perfectly replicate a spell’s design just by looking at the result of it

excellent memory, prodigal genius

can mimic bird noises frighteningly well. it’s the only way she feels like she can communicate well, so she leans into it
