but also “this character would be much more interesting if she was a woman” is just often the way of the world !

the problem is i think a lot of the verdi baritone archetype opera characters who are obsessed with family legacy and the way they perform their own genders immediately become way way more interesting if they’re women. the trovatore where she’s the countess di luna and she is desperately trying as a masc-leaning lesbian to fit into a world that hates her in the deluded hopes she can prove herself and become the #Exception (while also being bent over backwards about the soprano going ‘i want the choice in this love triangle that signifies reckless freedom and going against societal grain!… i’m picking the man!’) would not SOLVE the essential dramaturgical problems of trovatore but it would at least make characters who aren’t azucena considerably more interesting.

feels like it’ll be just a mess + now a team doesn’t need to have over 50% of points to win, which just feels like it’ll be an Ordeal. also how will scoring work. it’s so…

but what ALSO gets me is the tragedy-comedy duo aren’t actually genres of theatre they’re the two categories of traditional greek theatre, which became adopted as a sort of general system through western theatre history. a Genre would be, like, “pastoral comedy” while comedy is a catch all and vice versa for tragedy. you of course Had theatre that messed with these two boundaries pretty much always (romeo and juliet for example starts as obviously utilizing comedy tropes and then turns around halfway in) but they aren’t genres!

mystery Is a genre! it has its own framework on a level comedy and tragedy don’t unless you’re going back to bacchanalia land or what have you! thats a third thing! it’s like if you went “this is day vs night vs ‘Kind of weather where it’s flurrying but also kind of raining’” That’s a whole different thing!!! That could in and of itself fall under either super category!!!!

TLDR its stupid and makes no sense and it peeves me .
