will you just let me be silly for a sec. there's this dread so ancient in me

Beautiful from Ordinary Days
idk man frequently i talk to trans men and mascs who basically tell me that they came out as queer or nonbinary years ago, but were terrified to come out as men or transition in a way that would mean they were perceived as male even though the dysphoria was crushing
specifically bc of rejection from their communities, from other queer people, other trans people, bc men are bad and awful
like. a fella told me earnestly he read this essay about how masculinity isn't inherently toxic from another trans man and im so glad it was positive for him and gave him the courage to transition, but it was horrifying to me that he should be made to feel so disgusted by his own gender that he needed that
esp bc once you're out as queer you're already rejected by mainstream society, so other queers are all you have - the prospect of being ousted and rejected from those spaces bc you become A Man is naturally terrifying
and its literally just rad fem rhetoric of men and masculinity = evil and bad that's infected queer spaces like a festering mould. ppl do it to cis gay and queer men as well, and also just to nonbinary ppl they perceive as cis men bc they don't like their language etc, and to trans men and mascs
ppl are sometimes like. surprised. when i don't apologise for being a man and assert that loving men is natural and beautiful, and reject the appeal of womanhood or women
as if that's not queer enough when like ??? hi???? my attraction to other men IS the queerness?
worst thing people did was turn the incredibly personal experience of being lgbt into strict definitions and rules and then ridicule and harass others who don't fit into their neat boxes, as if that isn't what we were trying to run away from this whole time.

People who are unable to suspend their disbelief are so boring. Like holy shit you discovered this fictional story does not 100% correlate with our reality? Should we call CNN? Should we invite Beyoncé?
Something deeply painful is the fact that seasons, especially fall, dont feel the same. Not because of individual maturity but because climate change has impacted the weather patterns so so so much that we cant even experience the same annual shifts that our ancestors have for centuries
I feel displaced, i yearn for the spring, summer, fall, and winter that i can barely remember experiencing
I think the thing that drives me the most batshit about the medical fatphobia conversation is that the burden of proof feels so exactly backwards. Just from an obvious best practices standpoint???
Things like intentional malnourishment, intentionally incapacitating vital organs through surgery, denial of potentially lifesaving medical care until those things are done, etc.
Those are all pretty extreme. The kinds of things it feels like a âfirst do no harmâ system should have a lot of solid evidence for before recommending or implementing them.
But theyâre so bog standard and accepted and everyone from doctors to your own family will look at you like youâre a flat-earther when you suggest maybe we shouldnât be defaulting to that.
âWe have proved there is an association between larger bodies and certain illnesses!â
Okay, have you proved the fat caused the illnesses?
âNo.â
Have you proved people have better long term outcomes from losing weight?
âWe canât.â
Right. And why is that again?
âWell to measure that, weâd have to compare the health outcomes of three populations - thin people, fat people, and fat people who became thin through weight loss.â
So do that.
âBut there actually are not enough people who became thin through weight loss and kept it off for us to do a long term study on how that impacts their health. The sample size is too small.â
So you canât prove that changing fat people to thin people would change their health outcomes to those of thin people.
Because you canât prove that fat people can reliably become thin in the first place.
But youâre still telling them to do that as your primary prescription.
Even when the recommended and unproven methods to do so are potentially very dangerous.
âYeah, butâ
What if as a doctor I found out pale people get skin cancer more often than darker skin people, so to prevent skin cancer, started recommending tanning to my palest patients? Would that be good health care?
âDonât be ridiculous. Thatâs not what weâre doing.â Isnât it though???
Iâm dropping the bit. Iâm losing my shit. I get so used to living in bizarro land but sometimes I just want to shake everyone. Calories are bad science! They are nearly meaningless! The BMI is bad science! Itâs nearly meaningless! The presumptions made in weight loss studies are so bad!!! And weâve known this for decades!!! And we just keep!!! Ruining lives!!! Why are we so invested in this clearly unfounded ideology about bodies???
i was not built for college but unfortunately i was also not built for anything else
i was especially not built to be employed
god i hate how normalized diet culture and shit like bmi and calories are. bmi is based on eugenics. calories are a measurement of how much energy something gives u and not at all of how much weight or fat ull gain. diets have been proven to be harmful and ultimately unhelpful in actually losing weight. fatness has been largely proven to not be inherently unhealthy and doesnt inherently cause health issues.
if anyone has more good links to add on then please do and if anyone knows more on this stuff than me then dont hesitate to correct me!
FOOD IS GOOD. FOOD IS GOOD. FOOD IS GOOD!! if youâre eating, ever, and even/especially if itâs hard, know that i am personally SO SO proud of you
The BMI was invented by Adolphe Quetelet, the 19th century statistician who invented phrenologist anthropometry. He wasnât just a eugenicist, he was one of the founding fathers of racist pseudoscience. Please do not listen to anything he has to say about your body.
âAnd get this: While epidemiologists use BMI to calculate national obesity rates (nearly 35 percent for adults and 18 percent for kids), the distinctions can be arbitrary. In 1998, the National Institutes of Health lowered the overweight threshold from 27.8 to 25âbranding roughly 29 million Americans as fat overnightâto match international guidelines. But critics noted that those guidelines were drafted in part by the International Obesity Task Force, whose two principal funders were companies making weight loss drugs.â

Body mass index is used to sell weight loss drugs, set insurance premiums, and counsel patients. There's just one little problem.
seriously the more people keep going on and on about âunhealthy weightsâ the more iâm convinced they donât actually give two shits about health
