I noticed Lucio doesn’t have a single portugese line? Yeah its kinda weird. I think some americans are forgetting he’s from Brazil, partially because they’re americans and they forget countries even exist sometimes, but partially because, in a lineup where nearly every hero is wearing their country’s flag on their sleeves (sometimes literally- thanks, olympics skins), there’s not a lot of reminders that Lucio is from south america.

I mean sure, there’s his default color scheme, which is literally the Brazilian flag, and sure, there was, the Olympics, which had our favorite ray of sunshine playing some good ol’ fútbol, but that’s about it? I mean the dude has hockey skins. Idk if Brazil is actually crazy about hockey or something, anything can happen, but like. Most americans associate hockey with CANADA.

Combine this with Lucio not having much of a Sotaque Brasileiro*, and now we’ve got fanfic authors giving him full AAVE, like WTF?

*(this joke worked better when I thought the word “accent” in portugese would sound more like the spanish “acento,” but it doesn’t, so u probably didnt even realize what I was saying there until just now. Sorry.)

Now I have no problem with AAVE. I think its important to represent nonstandard english dialects as normal and valuable in their own ways, especially when it’s done respectfully and knowledgeably, by authors who understand the dialect, But also when its not being put in the mouth of a dude who ain’t fuckin american. Because that? That’s a problem. That’s some “black ppl are all the same” bs and its gonna lead to some problems, so we’ve got a bit of an imperative here to maybe make some effort asserting the nationality of Lucío Correia Dos Santos. So let’s do some brainstorming, eh? Here lemme start this off by getting the most obvious solution out of the way:

a lot of brazilians like myself feel that Lúcio isn’t really brazilian tbh. our brazilian portuguese dub did him a lot of justice considering that our voice actor has a carioca accent (that comes from people that live in Rio de Janeiro). its spot on, feels so much more natural and it makes us feel like he really belongs where we are. i have a mixed accent since i lived in several states, but its predominantly carioca so whenever i hear PTBR lúcio im like “yea, thats how its supposed to be”

i think a major pet peeve latin americans have is when gringos think that latin america is this uniform thing where everyone speaks spanish and shit and all cultures are pretty much the same thing so why not bundle them up amirite. this is especially irritating for brazilians, since spanish aint even our language bro. latin america is rich as FUCK in culture, and each country has its own thing going on

i like jonny cruz, dont get me wrong, and i like the energetic vibe he gives lúcio with his voice. i dont fuss much over his lack of accent, but what upsets me is that literally everyone else has at least one thing, be it a skin or a voiceline, that makes you know that theyre from a certain country. lúcio has like, two sprays or something, in portuguese, along with his skin titles (roxo, azul etc). thats…… literally nothing lol.

soccer is a thing in brazil for sure, but it doesnt fucking represent us as a nation. its an important aspect of our culture, sure, but its a very superficial thing at the end of the day and im pretty goddamn sure brazilian ovw players dont want soccer to seem like a prime aspect of our culture when there is SO MUCH going on here. our country has major multicultural influences, african roots being the highlight– and the country is so damn big, each state has its own cultural reference. its not like blizzard didnt have goddamn material to work with

i rly hope they give us something at some point, i rly do. like… lúcio has so much potential, and blizzard could give us a chance to showcase at least a little bit of our culture, like they did with everyone else

1) DC does have a human trafficking problem and the police know about it. Many missing persons cases aafter the person is found get sent to a local org that deals with sex trafficking. The lived experiences of DC community members show that there has been people preying on runaways for several years with little help from the police 2) Many community members know some girls are leaving voluntarily, it doesn’t stop the police from not looking as hard as they could. 3) parents of children of runaways talk about how the police stop working hard if their kid has run away more than once(which happens for a myriad of reasons like it says in the article) 4) no one cares that 2017 isn’t as high as previous years, people just want their kids back

I suggest you go to community members, watch their town halls, and listen because while false information has been spread, articles like this do not accurately reflect what the community has been doing, their needs, and what they see
