Experimenting with race swapped art this month is fine and dandy, but if you prioritize that over actually original black characters with the justification of 'well, we have to raceswap already-established non-black characters because that's the only way we'll get any attention', congratulations:

You just put your own internalized racism out on proud display because you yourself are admitting that you yourself don't give black characters the time of day unless they're just hand-me-down non-black characters.

It's a month-based art challenge/promotion window in the same vein as Inktober, Smaugust, or Swordtember.

Artists are encouraged to promote projects centering around black or African characters or post art of black or African characters... But a lot of people have turned it into 'time to raceswap a bunch of non-black characters to own the racists'.

Not only that but, particularly last year, when people tried pointing out 'why are so many people raceswapping Asian characters as if Asians are White People 2.0?', the obnoxious sect of Black-tober participants lashed out with 'Well, we have to raceswap non-black characters because that's the only way people will pay attention to our art~'

And it's like 'Wow. You just... Said that with your whole chest without realizing how shallow it makes you sound, huh?'

Toph worked because she was flawed.

Extremely powerful, but also very alone

Able to see the world with her earthbending but Katara still had to remind her she was beautiful, because Toph had never seen her own face

She spends quite a bit of time unable to see, even with earth bending. She holds Sokkas arm on the boat in S3E4, when on ice in the Serpents Pass, and hanging off the airship in the finale (and more)

She’s extremely perceptive about everyone but herself, because her own internal trauma is too much for her to process without Katara calling her out for it

Toph is extremely powerful, and her mistakes, disability and flaws don’t negate that.

If Toph had been woke the narrative would have always supported her as justified and badass in her actions, and ATLA did anything but that.

In addition, Toph wasn’t a season 1 character. Toph was introduced six episodes into the second season, as the person who’d be next in helping Aang learn how to properly use his powers. She’s not there as the protagonist (which is the actual core element of being a Mary Sue), but as the MENTOR character. She’s just a mentor who’s younger than most of the characters, rather than older.

Also let us not forget how Katara was the character that flirted with being the “put boys in their place and bring up systemic sexism” character. Which was subverted by the fact that both north and south were “Pee Oh See,” and were in fact actually factually objectively patriarchal societies where women had roles or were exiled.

The difference between 10s era Wokeness and 00s cheesy flirts with milquetoast old hat moral messaging was both substance and relevance. It’s one thing to point to an Asian civilization, actual patriarchy and go, “Yeah this shit sucks. Get it? It sucks. It exists in old world civilizations and ones trying to come up to liberalize and industrialie and progress.”

And the late 00s early-mid 10s era, where suddenly sexism and misogyny and patriarchy were synonymous with western countries, the existence of it in Pee Oh See populations was considered either A.) Culturally pure wonderful Asian and Black compassionate sexism that was good ackshully but could be better B.) imported bigotry from white people. If Avatar: TLA came out today we’d probably have board rooms full of writers screaming about how Grey DeLisel shouldn’t be ALLOWED to voice Asian characters because she’s white, Toph would run around actively refusing to earthbend to see everywhere and instead yell about how society not being entirely accessible for the blind whether earthbender or normal human was ablism, and be an angry radical that keeps flirting with Marxist revolutionary themes with messages about abolishing kingdoms, rather than as the stoic, dominating and overcoming individualist she truly is.

In the late 90s/early-mid 00s, Wokes and their dogmatic insistence that THEIR takes on societal issues were the only valid ones and their takes were synonymous with the issues themselves, was emaciated. They said too much that when omitted allowed people to give them the benefit of the doubt, swallow their bullshit by assuming they had neutral to good intentions, and then one by one they oversold their zealotry, said the quiet parts out loud and lost the person on the street’s trust and interest. It took 10-15 years to clean the slate enough to start pretending to be the youth movement again and impress it on the young that their opinions were all their generation’s ideas, and conveniently refuse to talk about how these exact lukewarm takes were there 15-20 years before.

So, I'm back, at least planning to be back. Tumblr is at least easing up its porn ban and Twitter insanity can only be so bearable, so I will at least try to have a bit of fun and expand the Kori(TM) brand while I am at it.

I will say, I will probably rebrand this blog, if not make a new one entirely. I'm 23 now, I'm fairly different from when I made the original TIAK blog. With nearly 150000 posts and a gap of 3-4 years since I originally dropped it, there's going to be quite a difference in posting styles and what I want to accomplish here.

Either way, don't plan to get rid of the old posts. History deserves to be preserved, after all~.

Hey, I have an important question I need answered: Is Medeus supposed to be pronounced as Meh-Day-Ous or Meh-Deuce?

Archanean pronunciations, really FE pronunciations in general, tend to be incredibly fuck you and change on a whim, and Medeus hasn’t been introduced in Heroes, so even if I’m right, I could be wrong months down the line.

Given how Translate pronounces the katakana of his name, and how you pronounce the genus, I would say it’s Meh-Day-Ous, not Meh-deuce.

There are few video game genre names that are more misunderstood than “open world” and “RPG”.

So now that I have some free time, I figured I’d elaborate for people who even want an elaboration.

Video game RPGs are derived from tabletop RPGs: your DnDs, your Shadowruns, your Warhammers and so on. As a result, video game RPGs share these common mechanics with their tabletop parents:

Character Customization: This point sounds vague but that’s intentional because many video game RPGs handle “customization” very differently. Customization can be from something simple like setting the look, name and bio of your character to more complex morality/alignment and deciding choices in the story. Essentially the point is that every player who tries the game will likely have a different experience from other players, as they’ll all have different mindsets going into the game

Stats/Attributes: This point ties into the first but is still pretty important on its own. The player character and every other character need to have very clearly defined attributes that will factor in to the player’s desired playstyle. More importantly, the PC’s stats must be allowed to change and advance overtime

RNG: Video games don’t have dice, so it makes do with having the computer simulate the rolls. RNG can control multiple systems in the game but the idea is that no matter how many times you do X action, you will never have get a consistent Y outcome; it can be the same or it can be slightly different or it could be totally supremely different

So yeah this is my personal definition of what makes an RPG and RPG based off of my years of playing different RPGs. This isn’t a comprehensive list but its one that I adhere to and has yet to fail me.

Oh btw: I also don’t consider JRPG and WRPG “real” genres because the only thing that’s consistently different between the two is where the game itself was made. People who insist one is less of an RPG than the other are turbo nerds who need to get shoved into a locker

I think saying one is “less” RPG than the other is stupid but arguing that WRPGs and JRPGs don’t have distinct approaches and are different sub genres seems a bit reductive.

I don’t consider JRPG/WRPG to be “real” subgenres because the point of a subgenre is that it’s supposed to be much more specialized take on a genre conventions. Action RPGs, MMORPGs, Strategy RPGs: these are actual subgenres. Games classified with this have very distinct features and mechanics that make it standout from the RPG genre as a whole.

Yes, games that are made in different countries with entirely different cultures gare going to have developers working on it with different mindsets, but game genres are defined by gameplay not culture.

Telling someone “This is a JRPG/WRPG” says nothing about how the game plays: Is it turn-based? Is it real-time? Does it have classes? Is there a party system? Is it multiplayer? Is it story-focused? Is it linear? Does it have a bajillion outcomes? Who knows! Because I sure don’t!

Like, there’s a big difference between saying “Deus Ex is an FPSRPG” and “Deus Ex is a WRPG”: one tells me what the game is actually like and the other tells me where it was made. So if you’re going to consider JRPG/WRPG to be “real” genres, you need to take the time and ask yourself “What is the core, defining gameplay trait that separates this from the genre as a whole?”

For me, JRPG/WRPG are in the same class as unofficial genres like “Soulslike” and “Metroidvania” but those two are still a much better indication of what the game is like. It wouldn’t make any sense to start breaking every single major genre down to the country where the game was made but yet here we are.
